INT. PALACE HALLWAY
(Ariel comes dashing down the long flight of stairs with a big smile on her face. But then she stops dead in her tracks. Eric is with a very beautiful, dark-haired maiden. Grimbsy & Carlotta are standing toward the back of the room, looking SOMBER. As Eric speaks, there’s something odd about his manner. He seems almost as if he were in a hypnotic trance. The maiden clings TIGHTLY to Eric.)
ERIC: Ariel, I’d like you to meet Vanessa. She saved my life a few weeks ago. I’ve been trying to find her ever since.
(Vanessa smiles sweetly at Ariel, who draws back in shock & confusion. She keeps thinking “How can this be?” to herself. Sebastian watches from the staircase, also perplexed.)
ERIC: We’re going to get married onboard the ship at sea, this afternoon at sunset. I want you to be there, Ariel. I-
(Ariel is CRUSHED, shaking her head in disbelief. Her whole world is collapsing around her. She looks over at Grimbsy & Carlotta, who are obviously distressed and disappointed about the situation, but there’s nothing they can do. Angry, confused & trying to fight back her tears, she reels away from Eric & races out of the room.)
ERIC: Ariel? Ariel, wait!

(Eric starts after Ariel but Vanessa gently pulls him back. She kisses him sweetly. Unseen by anyone but the audience, a DIABOLICAL SMILE crosses her face. The cape around her slips slightly & we see Ursula’s nautilus shell with ARIEL’S VOICE, handing around her neck.)
