DAY 139

The Rescuers is another of the weaker animated films Disney's done. It has a couple clever ideas adapting the books by Margret Sharp, but it didn't quite deliver. The idea of mice that have a rescue aid society to save people and one of their most recent clients being a little kid held hostage to retrieve a precious artifact? It might work. The problem is there's a lot of slow moments with nothing happening and there's barely any action. And with a title called "the Rescuers", that's what you'd expect! It's like the title's misleading us. The animation isn't that really spectacular. I guess it's probably a little bit cleaner, but the character animation is standard, so) and the only thing that's pretty cool about the animation is the design of the swamp; but even then, swamp settings aren't that appealing unless it's a villains' lair or something. The characters aren't really that engaging. Some like the swamp folk vermin come and go, the villains are sort of one-dimensional, Penny's too overly cute it becomes sour, the mice have good starts but they usually just repeat the same jokes over and over again. Some of their voices are OK though. The music, both score and songs, aren't that memorable either, but apparently one of the songs was nominated for an Oscar. It turned out to be a big in when it was first released (even outbeating Star Wars at one point and claimed to be "the best film since Mary Poppins"), but it hasn't really held up since then. It's not terrible, just not engaging. Just wait 13 years.
