Description
Invictus is a villain whose career has suffered some serious setbacks. Originally a spy employed by the Chinese government to steal US military secrets Jean-Paul LeBlanc harbored a deep hatred for his homeland. His father Henry had been a civil rights activist who was killed in Atlanta. A Korean War veteran, he met his end, hung from a street light, lynched by the very people he'd fought to protect. That event embittered his son, Jean-Paul toward the white establishment forevermore.Growing up, the young man pursued a degree in physics and graduated at the top of his class from Brown University. From there he was hired on as a low level researcher for a defense contractor and slowly worked his way up the ladder until he was working on cutting edge, top secret projects. Somewhere in that time, he was contacted by the Chinese and with little effort at all, turned traitor against his country.
Jean-Paul was a successful spy, funneling research and technology to his Chinese handlers for several years. Then, as he was trying to obtain the plans for an intelligence boosting technology dubbed "Project Timothy Leary", he was discovered. In a desperate attempt to escape capture, he engaged the machines, then tossed a small incendiary into the apparatus. He'd intended to escape during the confusion, but the incendiary caused more damage to the equipment than he'd anticipated and the whole mind expanding technology overloaded, then exploded with Jean-Paul still in the room.
In a manner of speaking, Project Timothy Leary was a tremendous success, for while it did not increase Jean-Paul's intelligence, it unlocked incredible psionic powers. Jean-Paul was gifted with immeasurable telekinetic power, plus clairvoyance and short range telepathy. Needless to say, he did not use his newly developed gifts in the most socially responsible way. Dubbing himself Invictus, he went on a murder spree against every white person or institution he felt was oppressing his people. He also robbed a lot of banks.
After numerous encounters with super-heroes, he ended up in an all out war with the immortal paragon, Thunderchief. After several battles ending in a stalemate, Thunderchief tricked Invictus into entering an experimental wormhole generator...then he blew it up. Invictus was not seen again for nearly 30 years.
In the interim, his daughter, born of a union between him and his Chinese handler had defected to the US from China, after discovering her origins. Unlike her father, she demonstrated the dramatically heightened intelligence Project Timothy Leary was supposed to provoke. Angered at her father's criminal actions, she developed a hi-tech suit that enabled her to fight crime. She specifically targets threats to the political and corporate power of her country.
When Jean-Paul finally escaped the dimensional limbo he'd been exiled to, he found himself face to face with his own daughter. Invictus the criminal, meet Invictus the hero.

If comics has taught us ONE thing over the years, it's science is risky. You never know what kind of chemicals or radioactive isotopes or experimental equipment is just laying around, waiting to turn some poor shmoe into a super-person.
Curse you science!Β
