Description

Axl and Iggy continued to strain and grimace while they struggled to free themselves from the dirt still encasing their bodies. They knew something was amiss, from the manner the Frognicks had seemingly lost interest in them. Their amphibious captors appeared genuinely confused and scared from the haunting sounds coming from the woods. The fact that something had managed to instill fear into them did little to ease the prisoners’ nerves, but it was an opportunity and for all they knew, it may be their only one.

            Axl took the lead in exhuming himself having managed to free three fourths of his chest from the ground while Iggy lagged behind having only his upper chest removed from the dirt. Once he managed to free one of his arms from the soil, Axl’s speed increased with him soon freeing his other arm.

            Axl grunted and grimaced as he mustered all of his upper body strength to pull himself free from the dirt which still clung to his lower body. With one last growl, he managed to pull the rest of his body from the ground. “Yearrrgghh!”

            Axl rolled to the side of his soiled body, panting, as his tongue drooped from his mouth.

            “Axl, a little help?” grunted Iggy.

            Axl nodded his head still panting with exhaustion. “In a moment. . .” Suddenly, Iggy’s eyes widened in fear. “What, the!”

            Axl quizzically tilted his head. “Huh?”

            “Something just moved past my leg!” Iggy nervously exclaimed.

            Axl snorted as he began to approach Iggy. “You don’t need to go makin’ stuff up, buddy. I’m gonna get cha outta there.”

            “I’m not makin’ this up!” snapped Iggy. His eyes once again shot wide open. “Whoa! OK, something is seriously wrong here!”

            Axl began flicking tongue smelling the air for anything unusual.

            Iggy again flinched in the dirt. “Axl!”

            Seeing the fear on his friend’s face was genuine, Axl immediately began digging by Iggy with his claws. “OK, buddy, I’m gonna get you outta there!”

            Iggy breathed wildly straining his upper body back and forth. “Axl, you gotta get me outta here, now!”

            “I’m goin’ as fast as I can!” grumbled Axl.

            After saying this, he heard a loud rustle of dirt. He looked over his shoulder to see an unusual pasty white mushroom springing out of the ground.

            “Did that just sprout out?” asked Iggy, his eyes widening in panic.

            Axl nodded his head, his eyes also widening with growing concern. He promptly returned to digging Iggy out with his claws trying to pick up his speed all the while the same rustling continued to happen all around him.

            “They’re sprouting everywhere!” cried Iggy.

            Axl again glanced over his shoulder to see similar white pasty mushrooms beginning to cover the entire garden.

            He returned to digging Iggy out of the ground. Suddenly the ground began to rumble driving the mushrooms to continue growing at an unnatural rate.

            “It’s gonna eat us!” shrieked Iggy.

            Axl managed to free one of Iggy’s arms.

            “Don’t leave me, bro!” sobbed Iggy.

            Axl spoke between pants. “I’m not goin. . . anywhere. . . without you. . .”

            Axl had Iggy nearly entirely out of the ground when he felt something wrap around his right leg.

            “What, the?” Axl felt it yank back causing him to fall flat on his chest. “Arrg!”

            “Axl!” cried Iggy in fear. Axl looked over his shoulder to see a white vine wrapping completely around his leg. Just then, an enormous large mushroom began to rise from the ground. It was the size of a large tree with vines whipping about from underneath. However, all of these details were small compared to the large jaw protruding halfway up the stem. Green slime dripped from it like drool. It had razor sharp, carnivorous teeth, constantly gnashing together as though chewing something invisible. Axl felt the creature begin to drag him toward it’s gnashing jaws. He felt himself being lifted off the ground as the tentacle continued wrapping itself around him.

            Just when he thought he had met his end, the tentacle dropped him to the ground with the mushroom releasing a loud roar.

            Axl grunted as he landed on the hard ground. He looked over to see Iggy standing next to a flailing tentacle cut from the beast. In his hands he wielded a large axe.

            Several more large flailing tentacles sprouted from the ground, surrounding them in the garden in a circle.

            “Iggy picked up another nearby axe, tossing it to Axl. “The hicks left these in that rusty wheel barrel over there.”

            Axl gritted his teeth as he glared at the monster. “Let’s get rocked!”

            Axl and Iggy exchanged fist bumps before jumping into battle. The lizards growled and hissed as they began swinging their axes, like warriors wielding weapons.

            Axl managed to cut off the end of a reaching tentacle. “Keep your tentacles to yourself, freak!” jeered Axl.

            “Time to make some mushroom pie!” sneered Iggy.

            “What the heck?” cried Axl as he continued chopping the mushroom beast’s tentacles? “That sounds disgusting!”

            “Don’t dis my mama’s mushroom pie until you’ve tasted it in all it’s glory!” replied Iggy with a wink. After he had said this, one of the tentacles whacked Iggy’s legs like a whip. “Yeeouch!” Iggy cried in pain as he fell to the ground.

            “Iggy!” cried Axl as he leaped forward to assist his friend. Before he could reach him Axl felt a large vine whack him on his back sending him careening into the ground head first. “Augh!”

            Still clinging to the axe, he instinctively swung it at the vine which was now attempting to wrap around his leg once again. With one clean swipe he again managed to free himself leaving the severed tentacle flailing mindlessly on the ground.

            He glanced over in Iggy’s direction to witness the horrific sight of his iguana friend slowly being wrapped in tentacles to the point of nearly being completely cocooned. Iggy still managed to thrash his axe, but Axl could see his swings beginning to rapidly weaken.

            Axl immediately staggered to his feet, dashing toward Iggy’s assistance. He began taking swings at the front of the vines in his efforts to free his friend. Iggy’s left arm drooped until completely laying limp, dropping the axe to the ground. Axl felt another vine grip him, lifting his body off the ground. He continued swinging his axe reaching desperately for anything to attack. As it began wrapping around himself, Axl began to feel unusually weary slowing down the pace of his strikes. “I’ll . . . Get. . . You. . . Out. . . Iggy,” he weakly mumbled. Axl’s view had now been completely blocked by the vine twisting around his head. He felt his strength continue to drain, leaving him with only the ability to slowly raise and lower the axe. “I’ll. . . Get. . . You. . .” Axl felt the axe slip from his grip as his arms began to limply dangle.
