The sandstorm had finally died down, and with its departure, the non-elemental denizens of Windrush Canyon began to venture out of the Racing Commons building. Among the crowd were racers, vendors, track officials and, in the case of one Natasha Pafea, track maintenance volunteers.
The squat neko slipped on her protective goggles to shield against the dust kicked up by the track's visitors departing via stonebird. She consulted her list of tasks with a daunted hum; she was almost done for the day, but she'd left the most dangerous task for last. The canyon's many peaks towered around her, dual-sided flags waving atop each peak to declare the canyonwide truce between the earth and air elementals, the union which made the sport of stonebird racing possible. The flags were torn from many months of sand and dust. Natasha needed to fly up by stonebird and remove each flag, then replace it with a fresh one. Treacherous, sure, but Natasha admitted that it was exciting just to have the opportunity to ride a stonebird for the first time.
As a longstanding race fan, she knew the canyon, the birds, the racers, everything about the sport; and yet, as a neko, she was regarded with unconcealed contempt. Nekos were, after all, the filthy half-breed relatives of the proud gato people, and both the air elementals and the gatos had spent the past few hundred years cutting ties with the half-cat species. The fact that Natasha was even allowed to volunteer at the track was more than she could have hoped for, but with the privilege came stifling pressure. She knew the gatos were watching, and if she did a poor job, they would not hesitate to revoke her position and send her packing back to Costa Del Nyan. Stonebird racing was one of the world's most sacred traditions, and there was no room for some incompetent neko to sully its good name.
Swallowing such thoughts for the time being, Natasha grabbed a bundle of fresh flags and made her way over to one of the volunteer stonebirds, perched just off to the side of the Racing Commons. The bird itself was a marvel of elemental design. Crafted by the Earth Lord Krom'Thor and blessed by the Air Lord Zephryn, the solid stone creature was capable of swift and graceful flight despite its size and weight. Each stonebird came outfitted with a saddle and reins, allowing racers to control the creatures and race them through the narrow canyons. Though she had watched countless races, Natasha could only fantasize about the sensation of whipping through the deadly race track with only a stonebird between herself the hard ground. Merely thinking about it filled her with a buzzing exhilaration. She wouldn't be able to go very fast while replacing the flags, but just being on the stonebird would help sate her desire to race one of the creatures, a desire that was quite impossible.
"Excuse me," A firm, deep growl rose from behind the girl, clearly belonging to a gato. Natasha turned with wide eyes to look upon the man who had called to her, shocked to find the proud form of Don Mendez, the legendary gato racer, arguably the most famous and successful stonebird racer of the past century. He stood at six and a half feet tall, short gray fur covering his powerful body, streaked with white and darker grey around the face and arms. He was dressed in his leather racing outfit, just like how the posters and paintings depicted him. The comparatively short neko felt her legs tremble like jelly in his presence. More than ever, she felt the overwhelming sense that she shouldn't be here. This was a gato's domain. The fact that Mendez had even elected to speak to her was mind boggling, unheard of, terrifying. What did he want? What could she say? She was going to look and sound like an idiot no matter what, and Mendez would have her kicked out! "Ah, so you're the neko I've been hearing about. Come, don't look so frightened. I understand you are very brave to volunteer here, given the bad blood between our people, but think not of that. As lovers of sport, we are above petty feuds, are we not?" She could not reply, feeling her mouth dry up at his words. What had she done to deserve such understanding? "Yes, I can see you don't know what to say. Please, calm yourself. If there is anything I can do to help you feel more comfortable..." the cat-man paused, before nodding with a smirk. "Ah, I know. I was just about to sit down for lunch. I would be pleased if you could join me. After all, you have been working hard."
"M-me? Eat- join you?" Natasha whined at her stammering, before forcing a nod and smiling up at Mendez. "Of course! I... thank you!" She dared not question his kindness. Instead, she followed him to his small tent out behind the Commons, in an area designated to racers who wished to live near the track. The interior of the tent was lavish and comfortable, and much more spacious than it had seemed on the outside. More importantly, the floor was nearly covered with food. A feast lay before the neko, consisting of more types of food than she knew existed: exotic meats and pastries comprising the majority of the feast. Was this what it was like to be a rich and influential racer? Natasha ran a numb hand through her hair as she shakily seated herself near the meal, an eager growl rising from her soft tummy. Mendez seemed to notice her eagerness, as he merely chuckled and stood by, watching her intently.
"Please, enjoy yourself," the gato assured her with a nod, gesturing broadly across the feast. "Take as much as you'd like, I insist." Natasha gulped and giggled dizzily in reply, taking in the sheer amount of food set before her. Of course, it would be rude to eat too much, but he had said that she could take as much as she wanted... Reaching gingerly for a honeyed ham hock, the neko brought the massive morsel to her lips and tore off a generous bite. It was, of course, delicious.
--
"Ouughh..." she lazed back, supporting herself with her arms as her chest heaved. The feast was barren before her, all of it packed into her now enormous belly. The sphere wobbled gently in her lap, smothering her knees as numerous gurgles and groans rose from its packed girth. With a sheepish hiccup, the neko shivered and let her maw hang open for a few moments. "-bbbuuurrrrrrrrrrrrrppp- gh... s-sorry!" With utter horror, she realized that her host was still watching, and that she had greedily devoured all his food like a lunatic. "I-I'm so- oh, oh no, I can't believe I..."
"Think nothing of it, my friend," Mendez snorted, helping the bloated neko to her feet and lightly patting her back. "It is for the best if you were that hungry. Consider that a reward for your hard work."
"I-Mmmh..." Natasha felt her cheeks flush at his words. She hadn't thought it possible for a gato to be this kind. With a soft groan, she stumbled out of the tent, slouching noticeably as her hefty belly made movement difficult. "I need to lie downnn...."
"Lie down?" Mendez cocked a brow, looking her over with a hint of a smirk. "And leave the flags unchanged? We are counting on you to replace those, after all."
"What." Her heart stopped for a moment as she attempted to figure out if the gato was joking. He wasn't. He actually expected her to complete her task in this state. As she looked around, she noticed that the eyes of passerbys were on her, noting her stuffed gut and wondering almost out loud how she expected to fly a stonebird with the excess weight. It was then that it dawned on her: Mendez wasn't being nice. He had set her up, knowing that she was in charge of the dangerous task of flag-changing. She was trapped now. If she backed out of the job, she would never be welcome back in the canyon, but if she went through with it, she was putting herself in danger. The gato had her right where he wanted her. Sighing shakily, she hurriedly departed from Mendez, making her way over to her temporary stonebird once more. Backing down was not an option; She had too much pride to leave her most important job unfinished. She would have to risk it.
--
The girl swallowed as the bird took off into the air with her on it, her bloated belly sagging over the creature's head and resting there with a series of pleased gurgles. It wasn't an amazing set-up, but it was all she could do. Trembling, she watched the ground rush by beneath her, before returning her attention to the sheer sensation of finally riding a stonebird. The beast was responsive and powerful, and Natasha hoped it could hold her weight without issue. Rising up, she reached the first peak and began to switch flags, looking around non-stop to make sure nobody was watching. Unfortunately, they were watching. As the only person out flying at the moment, and thanks to her excessive belly, Natasha could not help but draw attention to herself. With a swallow, she slipped the new flag onto the pole and guided the stonebird back down to a more reasonable level. The next few peaks would be easy if- She yelped with shock as a loud 'chunk' broke the silence. Before she understood what had happened, the stonebird's head was tumbling down into the canyon and out of sight. Her belly flopped forward, delighted by the extra space, while the rest of her realized with utter terror that she had just broken a stonebird with nothing but her own fat gut. More importantly, she was now about to freefall into the gaping canyon below unless she did something. Tensing up, she grabbed the reins tight and pulled back, hard.
The canyon flew by as the headless bird began to sink, gliding across the breeze with its powerful wings. Tasha grunted as she yanked the reins from side to side, piloting the bird through sheer momentum, using its wings to keep her from crashing headlong into the canyon wall. Sweat daubed her brow as she puppeted the bird along, barely scraping the canyon wall before steadying herself once more. The ground was fast approaching. She would need to land the bird smoothly, or she'd be tossed ten meters ahead, a flight which would not end well for her. Manipulating the reins with every ounce of will, she pulled the limp bird upward, catching a draft and riding on it for as long as she could manage, getting closer and closer to the ground in the meanwhile. Her eyes narrowed and the world grew hazy, only the bird's remains and the canyon registering in her thoughts. She was a dead neko unless she could come in for a safe landing, but with the bird out of control, how could she land it safely?
The beast's front claws skimmed the ground as it drew near, sending a shiver through the near-panicking neko. She would have to let it down gently, slowly... Gulping, she felt its claws scrape the ground once more, easing it down until its belly began to scrape the canyon floot. Slowly, its momentum faded, and Natasha let it hit the ground, sliding forward a few meters before coming to a slow halt. She rose from the headless, motionless bird with a loud gasp of relief, leaning against the canyon wall for support as her agitated belly gurgled deafeningly in her lap. When she opened her eyes, horror once again gripped her. She stood face to face with a towering mass of rocks: the earth lord, Krom'Thor.
"O-oh, L-lord Krom'Thor, I-I can explain, I'm so sorry, I- Tasha stammered, her face going crimson in the awe inspiring presence of the elemental leader. Clearly he had seen everything. "I know I'm a disgrace, and I ruined one of your birds, a-and I'll go. Just, I'm so sorry you had to watch that embarrassing fuck-up!" She shivered, struggling to hold Krom'Thor's gaze as the towering earth lord merely smirked and looked her over with a shake of his head.
"Spare me your paranoia," He rumbled with what must have been his attempt at a grin. "What you just did was incredible! I've never seen anyone pilot a headless bird before! And emerge unscathed, no less! Who are you?"
"M-me? N-nobody, just a neko- N-natasha... um... that's my name." Natasha nodded jerkily, her breaths catching in her throat as she realized she was speaking to one of the most powerful beings in the land. "I-it was nothing, I-I mean, it was my fault it didn't have a head in the first place." She gave her plump gut a sheepish lift, then drop, watching it wobble with some bemusement.
"I'm not here to flatter you, neko," Krom'Thor barked, folding his rocky arms across his chest and glaring down at Natasha. "And I don't care who you are. If you can pilot a bird like that, why aren't you racing?" Was he serious? She wasn't racing because the track managers, who incidentally served him and Zephryn, would allow no neko to race, simple as that. Natasha explained this fact to the earth lord, who merely hummed and took a look around the canyon, noting the stunned gazes of various gatos and air elementals, a sight which brought a grin to his craggy face. "Ah, you are prohibited, aren't you? Well, no longer. Listen to me, whatever your name is. I am willing to let you race on behalf of your people, if you promise to rub it in the faces of Zephryn and his pet cats. I can just see the looks on the gato's faces when they have to deal with a neko racer in their precious sport! That will show them to be haughty."
"L-Lord Krom'Thor, I-I'm not worthy," Natasha insisted, going redder and redder as the earth Lord's offer resonated within her. "I'm just a volunteer. T-that was my first time riding one of those things. I-I couldn't possibly be a racer-"
"Consider it, then," Krom'Thor growled. "This is a historic opportunity for your people. You have proven you can handle one of the beasts with skill. I want you to put that skill to use and anger the gatos! Debate it no longer. You were born to race here."
"B-born... to race?" Natasha swallowed, trembling uncontrollably now as she let every one of his words sink in, before turning her gaze sheepishly up to him and murmuring. "I-I'll do my best. I... thank you. So much."
"Save your thanks," Krom'Thor snorted, turning to thunder out of the canyon without waiting for the neko. "Consult the officials in the racing commons for details about your first race. They'll be expecting you." With that, the earth lord was out of sight, leaving Natasha alone with her amazement. Too numb from the day's events to properly express her joy, the neko merely collapsed onto her knees and sniffled into her hands, her tail limp in the dust behind her. No neko had ever received an opportunity like this, and as she considered the implications of Krom'Thor's offer, she vowed that she would not be a disgrace to her people. She doubted she was any match for the likes of Don Mendez, but she would try her best, and maybe, just maybe, stonebird racing might become a sport that nekos could watch with pride.
That is, if she wasn't too fat to ride a stonebird after she finished with her meal.
Here's the first pic and story for the Origin Project. I have a rough schedule in place now, taking into account your suggestions as to whose origin story you want to see. This one was a bit of an exception since I thought it would be neat to do something with Natasha, who I don't draw very often~ But the next few stories should be more in line with your suggestions. Until then, enjoy!

She needs the worlds largest belly corset to squeeze her big belly down an in enough to clear the new stonebirds head. She can pig out hugely again after she wins her first race, assuming she somehow weighs less than those other tall muscle bound competitors.
