On Suki's appearance here—in contrast to Mai in canon, Suki was raised as Katara's surrogate sister. Due to Kyoshi Island's proximity to the Southern Water Tribe, it was conquered in the early days of the war, but over the years the island still occasionally rises in rebellion. Hakoda put down the most recent one, in the process bringing back the orphaned Suki to Kya as a gift. The Water Tribe was in the practice of keeping a native of the island at the palace as a guest, though they are really a hostage to discourage future insurrections.

For Suki's color scheme, I took a bit of a liberty in making her Kyoshi uniform mostly blue and silver rather than the original greens and golds she wears in the fanfiction. I wanted a way to tie her more visually to the Water Tribes.
