Hi! Sorry if you’ve already answered this, but is there a significance to the ring on Katara’s finger? I know the hand is probably to show the significance that bloodbending is probably what they’re talking about but why the ring? If it is to parallel the canon world, neither Zuko or Azusa ever had a ring. Just curious is all. Love your work!

Haha! No, I don’t think anyone’s ever asked that before, but it’s a good question. It’s probably not too clear from this page, but if you look at some of the earlier pages, you’ll see it’s attached to a sort of blue cloth that covers the back of her hand. This was mainly a design choice on my part—I wanted Katara’s clothing to be layered and cover more skin than her canon self wore in warmer climates, since for whatever reason more clothing can in some cases lend a sense of power (in a regal sort of way) to a design. When I was poking around looking at various references, I found a princess-style glove that looked like this: image.dhgate.com/0x0/f2/albu/g… [not the image I used, but a similar style of glove]
I liked the triangular look of the way the cloth came up over the middle knuckle and looped around the finger, since the plain-hand look wasn’t quite what I wanted, but full gloves like those she wears in the Southern Raiders didn’t really fit. Then, because distorted Katara is described in the fanfiction as wearing ‘jewelry of ice and bone,’ I decided to go for a ring made of bone rather than a cloth loop. The beads in her hair are also meant to be made of bone, which is why I color them as an off-white rather than the light blue she wears in the show.
So, there’s there’s not really any deep or symbolic significance to them, but I guess they are meant to tell something about her as a character, particularly since I tend to imagine some of the bones she wears as human bones. (Even though the detail probably isn’t too obvious from the way I draw/shade them, lol.)

I was actually wondering if you'll do the trials at the sun temple

Lol, that is a key scene and one I like a lot, but I didn't make it part of the lineup. (It will probably be referenced back to though, and there may be a frame or two from it in the art for the introduction page for comic #6.)

Hey! (As far as the sun temple trials scene from the fanfiction Kitsune was asking about goes, the frame I was referring to is now up here: 6.1.0.0 . If you mean more the comic in general--each scene takes quite a while to prepare [with many steps], so it's been quite a while since I started this project. It also wasn't a request by the author, I just read the fanfiction and got so excited for it I decided I wanted to try doing this. I've always wanted to do longer comics but never could find anything to inspire me to put the work into actually keeping up with one, so this project has been and continues to be a great experience for me.)
Anyway, hope that answers your question, let me know if I misunderstood or if you're wondering about anything else. C:

Yeah, it's based on the fanfiction 'Distorted Reality.' I would classify it as an alternate reality, though the story begins with an alternate version of canon events. (Basically, after the end of Book 2, Aang along with Sokka and Katara and the other members of Team Avatar continue to fight the Fire Nation, but the world has basically fallen after the failure of the Day of Black Sun invasion. So many people have died that Aang is so angry that the Avatar past lives decide to send him to another version of events to live through them again, and restore his understanding and compassion as the Avatar.) So it verges off from the original to become an AU, even though it begins in canon,
Thanks so much!! C: I've been working on the next scene off and on, though it's a long one so it's probably still a bit far away. X3

Lol, a lot. As far as finished pages go, I have over a hundred up and posted now, but there are at least between three hundred and four hundred pages of storyboards left. Plus I still have scenes scripted I haven't storyboarded. (Not sure I'll ever get that far but for now I'm just focusing on one scene at a time.)

Just my favorite scenes here and there. Most of them are from Book 2, but depending on how far I get (I’m not sure, since each scene takes so incredibly long to make) I do have a few planned from the fanfiction’s Book 3.

Wow, I'm loving every moment of this! You really captured everything about Katara that I envisioned, from her design to her dialogue to her expressions ... just everything about her is perfect. Honestly, every time I read this it makes me want to attempt to go back and tackle the idea of trying to finish the fic again!

Thank you so much!! (I felt like distorted Katara gave a very particular impression in the original story, which both plays into what you as the reader might expect but also takes you by surprise, and I really wanted to capture some of that visually if I could.) Hehe!! Wow, I don't know what to say, but that would be so exciting. (I know often life is too busy to do everything you'd like to, but you'll have to let me know if you do!!)

this is amazing! I like evil Katara!
she oozes with charisma, darkness, power and beauty! I love it!
It makes one realize how scary and formidable she would be to fight against especially when she's a villain
I'm afraid i havent been able to follow the progress of this story well but i like how its going so far.
I've said this over and over again, your work and art is getting better and better. The lighting and shadows, effects and mood setting, the expressions on their faces, you did them so well!
I wonder what Katara has in mind now. Is she gonna blood bend those pitiful four people she is summoning

Hey there! Thanks so much!! (I love drawing a bad Katara for some strange reason, lol. I don't know why, but I loved the idea of Katara in Azula's role, with some similarities and some differences that fit Katara more.)
Lol, yeah, unfortunately the way I set it up it is a bit disjointed, there's just so much that happens in the story in between scenes that it's impossible to explain it all so everything makes sense just jumping into it cold. x3 (Plus it's a lot of pages to load, so I figure a lot of people are just going to skip around to look at things here and there.)
Thanks!! I've always thought that sometimes the best way to get better is just to do a ton of something, and I like to think I'm improving little by little over time. Although, I keep wanting to do something more radically different that's a major step up, but then I get into it and there's just so much to do that I end up falling back on my old habits anyway. X3 We'll see I guess, maybe next time.

It's a good way to practice!
Hmm, do you mean that you have skipped some scenes? i actually wouldnt mind it!
Jumping to the most essential scenes would be a good idea considering how long the story is
lololol i understand completely! I go through the same thing with my art too

Axxonu In reply to Frappe7 [2018-08-27 19:35:23 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, this comic version skips a lot. Although the scenes that have appeared are occurring in chronological order, I just chose a few scenes that were my absolute favorite from the story to script and develop into scenes. (I figured there was a better chance I'd finish this project if I did it that way, rather than trying to commit to doing the entire thing straight through, which is massively long.)
Haha! It does seem like some frustrations as artists are universal.

I think you did the right thing by only choosing to do the most important scenes. It's like watching teaser trailers for each chap
And it keeps people interested on the story, get them hooked
while you would have less pages to draw, but still be able to finish the project

Awesome! It's got me thinking how my own OCs might fit into this world.
Hiroakira Fengxian would likely become a dangerous bandit and anti-Water Tribe terrorist leader. He might find Wan Shi Tong's library, find out about the Spirit Portals, and concoct a secret plan to cause a highly destructive battle at the southern Spirit Oasis. It doesn't matter if the battle itself succeeds or fails; the point is to enrage the spirits so they'll destroy the Southern Water Tribe, and everyone who lives there. This version of Hiro is far more ruthless, grim, and calculating, unlike the carefree and easygoing maverick in the "normal" timeline. And then there's his determination to unlock and use his "Kishin" form...
Still haven't decided what to do with Haruka.
Jin Xifan, the brilliant but narcissistic and utterly unscrupulous medical student of both Earth Kingdom and Foggy Swamp Tribe heritage, would likely be conducting horrific experiments for the Water Tribe military, like the real-life Unit 731 of the Japanese military in WWII. All this despite still being a teen.
Kumiho Sachiko, the malevolent fox spirit disguised as a human, who's main goal is to engineer as much human suffering and misery as possible, would be working for the Water Tribes as a front this time around, but through her info network she'd find out that something is... off about the Avatar. She's basically like a far more competent, better-informed, more subtle, and far more self-controlled version of Azula from the main timeline, and due to being a spirit, she's had plans set in motion for centuries. In any timeline, she loves seeing humans suffer, and loves inventing new methods of torture and cruelty that she sells off to humanity.

Interesting! I think the distorted reality does feature a few of its own OCs much later on, I took some notes on their appearance, but haven't gotten around to trying to design any of them yet.

In my main story, Hiro is the fiancee of Azula, by arranged marriage, picking up a dropped storyarc by the official writers. Hiro is.... not entirely right in the head. Literally. Due to some brain damage in his youth, he has insensitivity to pain, in that pain does not cause him suffering and thus is not a deterrent. As a result, it has made him reckless and fearless, and he fights as if he has no regard for his own safety, which ironically has saved him quite a few times.
He also falls under the trope "Too Dumb to Fool", meaning that Azula can't control him like she does everyone else because A. He's not afraid of her threats, an B. Her attempts at psychomanipulation fail on him because he either doesn't pay attention or he doesn't follow what her subtle implications.
It frustrates her to no end.
He's not a moron, just socially stunted and has a short attention span.
