In the distorted world, the South has developed a social structure similar to the North in that women are technically forbidden to fight, and not officially recognized as warriors. However, Katara's mentors Hama and Kanna had already broken the rules themselves teaching themselves combat bending in secret, and they passed along what they knew to Katara. Katara uses her charismatic influence to try to change some of those attitudes.
