Description
Yesterday was a good enough day to go take some pictures to choose from for the Breyer contest. I slipped out the door before Dad could come looking for me, and headed down the trail to find a good spot for what I had in mind. When I found it, I started prepping the area; clearing leaves off the path, removing plants as best I could to make good footing, and removing trash undesirables from the background, should they happen to render into the image. I took a few photos before Dad realized this is where I'd be if I wasn't in the house, and he soon tracked me and asked if I was ready to go help install the TV at my grandparents' house. He stuck around until I had a good enough collection to go through. With the added time crunch and the fact that the other side of the horse is damaged, (yay for rubs the size of a quarter!) I was limited with the angles and amount of photos I could take. This particular photo is the one I'm leaning toward entering, but the framing error is what's causing me to hesitate. The contest is about the Quarter Horse, (this is the only "Quarter Horse" I have...) but the whole scene has to work. Since it's a skill-based contest, this has made me apprehensive.
I like it so much, because it depicts what I had in mind, and the lighting gives it that realism effect. Plus, that orange saddle blanket gives good contrast to all the browns, yellows and greens.
You can view the others here .
What do you think?
I have un-watermarked JPEG versions for the purpose of the contest, whenever I decide what one to enter lol

What a lovely photo, I can appreciate the effort that you had taken with little time! I am excited to say that my new horse might be and appendix quarter horse and I was wondering if you'd have a good mold in mind for the customizing process dealio.... So before hand I could purchase the model, I will be uploading full body refs later, just know that he is built big and strong;long legs and all that thoroughbred and QHorse stuff
are Appendix Quarter horses aloud in the contest?

I think they were, since they're still a Quarter Horse. The Contest ended the 17th though (well, the 12th to be technical.)
Thank you! I think Big Ben , Cigar , Roxy , Giselle (depending on the build - My aunt has a full QH that resembles her,)
Strapless , or San Domingo as well as any of the galloping racehorses (Secretariat, Ruffian, etc) could work. I can give you a more accurate representation once I see the actual horse haha

Danget I missed! Oh well,,,, I think the Roxy and Ruffian bc my horse is built TOUGH and maybe if the Ruffian mold was positioned like this www.youtube.com/watch?v=75yu0a… I'd love to have that as the horse to be my custom

To have a collected neck, or the pose completely? Either way I can do it, it'll just be easier to get the exact pose with the Secretariat mold (which is why I'm clarifying XD)
Not a problem!

With the Ruffian mold... There is a video in youtube www.youtube.com/watch?v=3XLO9Z… I think it has a custom on the Ruffian mold that has that gathered head position, like the first link I gave you on the Secretariat mold.... I'll give you a link of the post piton I'd like; before I do anything how much do you think this'll cost?

I didn't see a ruffian with a gathered neck, but I know what you're wanting to do - the reference for the position will help very much I can also do concept sketches of the position on the model, if that'll help? That way you can get an idea of how the finished product will look. What colour is the horse? If it's a simple, solid colour (not counting leg and face markings - so basically not pinto unless minimal) it'll be around $120 for everything - resculpt, paint, etc. If you want shoes added, it'll be $10 extra since I have to order from England (but they're metal and do make the horse look great!) I have a set coming in for my Peter Stone ISH so once I get him completed, if those are something you'd be interested in adding, you can see how they look on a finished model. You can choose from ones with toe clips , and ones without - the ones I'm adding to mine are with toe clips. I think shoes - especially with toe clips - give it a more completed look, but if you're partial to barefoot horses, they are absolutely not mandatory. I'm just throwing them out there as an option haha
Also, if you feel the price is overwhelming, I am in search of a few bodies. I'd be willing to do a part-trade for any of those specific bodies - or any other model for that matter! Those are just the ones I'm putting priority to Whatever the worth of the model is, is how much will be taken out of the overall price. (So if you traded a body worth $20, that would drop the price to $100 [assuming without shoes.] If you traded two $20 bodies, the overall price would drop to $80 and so forth)

LOL THIS IS MY THIRD TIME TRYING TO REPLY WITHOUT LOSING THE WHILE DANG TEXT AHHHHHH, IMMA EXPLODE
okay, so here is the reference www.bing.com/images/search?q=d…. And I'd prefer the head only slightly turned to the right; but if you think that'd mark down points while showing please tell me! Alright the sketch would help a ton, but don't start till I have doublechecked with my parents... tomorrow. And here is my horse sta.sh/060kk4xz8p I am really sorry but I'd like to spend as little as possible because my roping horse costs so much XD
i have the models Nutcracker, American Paint Saddlebred, GG Valentine, Topsails, Mongamin (hesitant), Mawarii, Secriatriat (is LSQ BUT, has small nick on his offside on the butt so basically PSQ), and I have Sapphire in PSQ... I also would like to send a drawing and Mini Whinnies for free bc I appreciate your work
I HAVE BLACK CAVIAR FOR THE BODY, SO DONT BUY THE HORSE BC I CAN PROVIDE YOUR 'CANVAS'. : )
Pictures are also available

THAT LITERALLY JUST HAPPENED TO ME OMFG
So a collected neck? No problem! I think it can get away with a slight turn, but just to be safe, let's put a slight lean into its pose. Just to say "Hey, there's a reason his neck is turned." It's a simple procedure - just a bit of heat and pressure, and shouldn't alter the balance of the model at all, since it just has to be enough to show he's heading into a turn. (which is to say - it's free)
Ahh he's adorable! I love his colour! It'd be so fun to paint!
Hey, I can understand that! Let's see, if you were to trade GG Valentine, Topsails, the Marwari, and Secretariat, and like $14 for shipping the finished model back, I'd do it all for the models.
If you /could/ part with Mon Gamin, I'd take him with GG Valentine, the marwari, and the fare for shipping back, since I've been looking for years for him XD (Mon Gamin would go in my personal collection if you were willing because holy crap I've been looking for him for forever)
Either one would work, it wouldn't offend me whichever you feel more comfortable with - after you've double checked (and hopefully cleared) with your parents of course haha And awesome, I love freebies!
That's fine!
Let me know what the verdict is, and we can go from there

LOL IT HAPPENED TO ME WHILE I WAS REPLYING TO EVERY SINGLE MESSAGE XD
taht sounds perfect, and whatever you find necessary even without my permission (except for markings) I am giving you full control over! Yay I'm happy to see it's free, I couldn't tell if on the sketch if he was turning : /
i agree to the Mon Gamin plan, and I'd like to send that money because of you cooperation and fare way of trading!
Land remember that I'm getting a different (real live) horse that that bay because he was suddenly bought while we were leasing him BUT I'd still love to stick with the remodeling plan and trading plan.

Yeah I didn't add any turning in the sketch since I wasn't sure if you still wanted it turning to the right, or to go with the left xD I would've done a front-on sketch as well, to show the angle of the horse, etc.
Why thank you! I appreciate it!
Sure thing!

I'm working on my first proper one now. It's mostly done, but the seat set slightly crooked. I'm trying to decide if I should continue, or pull it and try again. It's not too bad, but if you're as OCD as I am, it'll bug you until you're blue in the face! And thank you! I think I want to make a proper hunter orange saddle blanket for these. You know, more than just a felt square

I do not know if I have asked you this but have you heard of Yellow Mount? He was a famous paint horse! I had his model from bryers years ago. I probably paid 20 dollars in the 80's for him lol now I am showing my age I have seen him online for 40 to 50 bucks used and not in the greatest shape. I wish I had all my models now I had then. I had Lady Phase The Black Stallion and him and many more that I dont have now. I sure miss my bryers horses. Maybe I will start all over again idn. How have you been. Got a new job? If so how is it going?

Yup, I had yellow mount a while ago for a commission - got him for $10 back in 2011 haha
I've been good, working on getting the house cleaned up. My uncles surprised me today - they came down to visit and fixed my stove (had a gas leak so I've been eating microwave foods all month) and I walked out to clean my litter box, only to find my other uncle out in the paddock mowing down the weeds. It made me so happy, because I just got news yesterdat that my aunt is bringing her horses back here for me to work on, so now they have a suitable place (after it starts growing in some) to be. Now I just need a goat or two to keep up the maintenance
Anyway, nope, I'm sticking with model horses for income. Spent almost $500 in supplies and bodies to boost my quality and productivity. I've been stripping 5 models, priming two others, prepping/resculpting three more, and found out that at least 3 in my personal collection are body quality so they'll be customized and will be up for sale, too. Definitely have enough models planned (not to mention commissions - I have two for a member here on deviantART, two for a friend in Nevada, two for my mamaw, and one for a friend on facebook - all paid/will be paid) to turn around for a profit. I also got a new model (personal collection) that I bought because my last new in box one was Mariah's Boone from Breyerfest 2011. or 2012. I can't remember and my bookbag with the pin is in the other room :P Anyway, I decided to treat myself to a new model. I'll be taking pictures of him soon, after all of the Spring Cleaning (and Rolex!) is done.
That's what I've been up to hahaha what about you?

Wow that is great you get to work with the horses again! Glad to here that. Nice of your uncles to help get things right for you too. I would love to do what you do with models, sounds fun and challenging. Well me I haven't been up to much just taking care of all my animals. Keeping them up is a hand full all by itself. 4 dogs 4 cats and I live in the city witch I hate. I love the country where I was from. Miss my horses all the time. The dogs don't have anywhere to run so I have to walk them on a leash. I'm going to the movies tomorrow to see Unfriended, I hope it is as good as it looks. Glad to here things are going well. Take care and talk to ya soon!

Yeah! I'm excited! My aunt's donating her garden to help me patch up the paddock. She said I can take the fence and use it to patch the holes and suh (until I can get the electric fence) She also has half a spool of fencing in her shed to get what the garden doesn't cover haha.
I know how that is, I have two cats and a new salamander at the moment, and I'm picking up my new puppy monday. I live in an area where I can hunt if I need to (squirrels and rabbits and the like) to feed the animals, and the restaurant I frequent has given us the go-ahead to take scraps home with us to feed them, but I still try to make sure I have the money for the bagged food from the store. My cats are good on food for the month - might even take us through next month too - but I have to get the puppy chow and head down to the store to get some worms for my salamander. And soon I'll be talking with Tammy (my neighbour and the hay farmer here) about getting the round bales each month for the horses, and I'll be heading to Tractor Supply for grain. But I love it, it's fun and the animals keep me company and give me entertainment haha
I know how that is. Even though I live in the country, my last dog here got hit because he found out how to climb the fence. My dad had to shoot him to put him out of his misery after all of his bones were basically crushed. Because of that, I have to take the animals out on a leash. The cats I take out on leashes because there are larger dogs nearby that have been preying on the neighbour's cats, so I don't want them running off and not returning.
That's nice I haven't been to the movies in months. Or a year. I think the last movie I saw was Mama, but I can't remember.
Thank you! I will, you too!

Well at least we are both animal lovers! The animals do make great company and always love you. Salamander huh, I had a water dragon and I just loved him. He had character he loved catching the crickets and eating them. He was my only house pet back then so he got to roam around the house quite often. I brought a kitten home one day someone had to get rid of and that water dragon bolted under a pair of shorts on the flood. He knew that was danger. So needless to say I found the kitten another home lol.

Bahaha yeah my uncle found him when he was going through the debris in the paddock to burn. He handed it off to me and I put it in one of my empty fish tanks haha
'
Yeah my cats hate other cats, so I'm going to see how they are with this puppy. They both growled at my dad (Who's 6'4") when I moved in, but now they're buddies with him so I'm hoping they'll see the puppy as no threat.
Well I should correct that. Sam wanted to be friends with one of my aunt's kittens, but the kitten didn't like him. So I'm hoping he's the same way toward the puppy, that way the other cat will follow along. Sam's the adventurous one, and Dean is more timid so he takes his brother's word in new situations. It took him three hours to leave the kennel when I brought him home, when Sam had already investigated everything and found his little hiding spots immediately.
We'll see haha

Oh gosh yes, equitation is one of my sticklers. For trail riders/ranch workers, I'll usually throw in a few common errors by real riders (chair seat, hand placement, etc) but for the most part I try to keep it as close to the desired equitation for that discipline as possible. Especially since the dolls like to throw in their OWN equitation problems when I'm not looking XD I'll get them set up perfectly, and then try to find the right angle to take the picture. When I go back over the results, they'll have dropped a rein, or lost a stirrup, or tipped backwards. It's a pain in the butt, so I just pick the lesser evil hahha
I started out on a Norwegian Fjord (lesson pony) and then my first horse was a Tennessee Walker, which I rode and trained for 8 years. After his training was done I was tired of gaiting (I love trotting and cantering too much) and sold him to get my second horse, a Belgian x Morgan. He was perfect except he had PTSD (he was a police horse) and I was having a hard time refreshing him since I was in a boarding situation at the time and couldn't get out to work with him as much as I'd like. So I sold him and am now on the hunt for a stock horse. In those years, though, I rode an Appendix quarter horse, an Appaloosa, a Quarter Horse, and an American Paint (all from the same line of Quarter Horses. The "full" Quarter Horse was a foundation QH) as well as three different Missouri Fox Trotters and even a Mustang at one point. There was another horse which was said to be a Quarter Horse, and then my aunt has a Quarter Horse and a Quarter Walker. After I sold my Belgian, I was taking lessons at a Thoroughbred Rehab facility, and rode an un-gaited Missouri Fox Trotter, and another Quarter Horse XD I was going to try out one of their thoroughbreds, but I had to stop lessons before I could.
I have a least favourite breed (TWH) and right now I'm in love with Criollo horses, but I think Quarter Horses will always be on my favourites list c:

(Just a urks me when it just's so misplaced, I feel will need to attempt to become a judge at a model show just cause of how well I can see detail)
The first horse I rode (not a pony ride) was a Appaloosa geldin' named chief, he was rather old but was still a lesson horse, he often had random quick bursts of energy, so I was then put on a welsh B with a tad bit of C in him, I could tell cause of the conformation on him (I was talking about dinosaur facts and sayin the dinos'names properly when I wasn't even in preschool yet) and he always did what ever he could to eat {I was a bit frustrated with him but I was 6 and a half :b} I then rode a mare (first time on a mare) I like my coffee black {forgot her barn name >n<} the first QH and mare I had ever gotten a chance to ride, great mare I had fun doing trail (in arena and outside of the arena) couple of years later after a fall (and my left arm getting a fracture) I now own my first horse

Oh gosh I would love to judge a show, but I've gotta do a few live shows as an exhibitor first
The Fjord was a gelding, my TWH was a gelding, Irish (the Belgian) was a gelding, the Appendix was a gelding, and the Appy, and the foundation QH, and the Paint. (I like Geldings can you tell? XD) Smoke, the first MFT I rode was a gelding, but Fanny and Breeze were both mares. The Mustang, as well as the Grade QH and my Aunt's QH and Quarter Walker are all mares. Remmy, the un-gaited MFT was a gelding, and the other QH I took lessons on was a mare. I'm looking for a young, preferably registered QH mare so that way when I get the funds for a foal, I can breed her. I'll settle for anything else, though, simply because it might be a while before I can breed and such haha
I showed my TWH in trail in hand, Trail (arena), costume class (he was my deputy and I was his sheriff - uniform courtesy of my stepfather. We won that year haha) egg and spoon, million dollar bareback, bareback equitation/horsemanship, western and english showmanship, two-gaited easy-gaited equitation (we won reserve champion) and so many others that I can't remember because it was like 5 years ago XD Irish went home before the shows started because he was having an anxiety attack, and when I showed Breeze (MFT I leased after I sold Dakota and before I bought Irish) we entered everything western and won 5th place in the bareback pleasure championship (because I forgot it was pleasure and rode like it was horsemanship ) I got disqualified from my first class at the beginning of gymkhana because I fell off during the Speed and Control but we won fourth in basically all the rest in the line-up. She was so fun to barrel race on haha She was a finished cow horse, so all the western events she knew like the bridge of her nose. I haven't showed since that year, though. The year I had to take Irish home was my last year in 4-H, and there are no local open shows where I live now.
Dad wants to get a small breeding herd of Criollos. He jokes about "If we won the lottery, I'm going to Argentina and you're going with me, and we're gonna pick out a fine little herd of Criollos" haha! If only it would happen :P

(Hahaha who wouldn't want a herd of Argentinian horses, they're coolorful <~cool and colorful combined >: D))
I remember my first stallion ride, 'twas a horse me lesson giver had for a couple a months ((he was a ShetlandXMini horse and had a attitude to act like a stallion))
I never managed to care for shows too much, did when I was younger, heck all I have on my ribbon wall is a 3rd place (ridden on a black QH gelding named Flint, great manners he had)
Once I'm shore Epony (Epona is this loser's horse -> ) is "ready" she'll probably do a trail class (maybe a costume class, bout as far as I care to go in a show before untacking the horse, letting said equine graze and I sit in a chair)

Oh gosh yes! They look like stock horses and warmbloods at the same time, and excel in just about anything you make them do. Just- ugh they're perfection in an equine XD
Hahaha my aunt boarded a flaxen chestnut Walker stallion and dared me to ride him. I was wanting to, but knew nothing about him and didn't want to risk getting a free bronco ride and trip to the hospital. Fastforward a few months, he's rehomed but shows up here again. The owners come looking for him, knowing this is where he'd be, and tell us their children have been riding him, and that he takes care of his riders. You bet I was regretting not getting on him by then, but I didn't regret making a smart decision at the time XD
I love shows, but I tend to get easily stressed. My most fun year was when I showed Breeze, because I knew she would do well even if we didn't place, so I was able to relax a bit. I somehow seem more relaxed with leased horses than with my own horses for some reason bahaha
I personally want to go into eventing (I got burnt out on western since I've really only wanted to ride english my whole life. I was forced western when training my walker since I had to have a secure saddle because of his tendency to duck out from under me. I still ride western whenever I feel like it, but it's not my first choice usually) but there are no shows here, so I'll just have to settle with my own cross-country course haha
But gosh, regardless of the discipline I ride, I can ride and have ridden the trails all day. My trainer and I used to set out at 8 am and go ride to the lake and let the horses play there. We'd be out all day riding and get back around 7-8pm. During the summers I'd just stay at his house after school got out and help out around the barn, and we'd set out training and trail riding. I want to show, but I am just as - if not more - content on the trails. That's why I was so eager to move here, because there's nothing BUT trails, and I have my own small farm so no more boarding

lucky, (I atleast have cheap boarding, a place that is closer by, $800 something, with my lesson giver allowing me to board Epona $250)
I don't think I will enter maybe but one more show for the rest of my life, they stress me out, I am constantly running around like a chicken with it's head cut off worried I don't have ____insert item___. *rants on how I for some reason don't like shows*

Ayedeas In reply to IrishWolf2468 [2015-04-01 02:37:04 +0000 UTC]
I was paying $250 for my board with free lessons (bless that man's soul, he put up with me more in one month than most instructors do with one student for 5 months) so it wasn't too bad, it was just impossible for me to get out there more than a couple times a month on the off season. I love shows, but I'm the same way. I get stressed, overwhelmed and cranky. But yet, I have fun, because at the end of the day we all got together to eat a meal, talk about our classes and laugh at our mistakes, and then went to bed happy. Plus, for someone who boarded, it was nice to wake up in the morning with the responsibility to go out to the barn and feed the horse before yourself. It was rewarding in itself to go in and see my horse nicker at me for its food. It's not something I got often, so it was a great way to start my day.
But yeah, as 8:00 rolled around and I was still bathing the muck off my horse, that's when the stress and anxiety kicked in XD I got yelled at for not washing my horse's mane (this is the belgian so he was taller than me at the withers, let alone the neck) and I got so angry when I shouldn't have because she wasn't really YELLING at me, more of "Did you wash his mane?"
And then there was a local show where I tried barrel racing my walker. He hated the announcer's stand so he acted up around that barrel, and wouldn't turn AT ALL despite the fact that he'd zip around the trees like a pro racer in the field XD He hated the shows, though. I tried doing dressage - a simple walk-trot test that we had done 100 times at home - and halfway through it he lost responsiveness to the bit and went straight to the gait. The judge let me try again, and he did it again XD That was the last year I showed him. That summer we rode tons of trails, and my trainer had me take him over a small slate dune. He responded so well, and hopped down which made me laugh because he looked so happy like "AW YEAH LET'S JUMP" (his ears perked forward when I cued him to go down when he made the little hop) and my trainer shook his head and said "You know what? If he doesn't sell, just keep him"
I miss him sometimes, but I don't think I could tolerate the running walk much more at this point haha I never really was one for gaited horses anyway. He was a cutie though
