Description I'm just submitting this right now to show how far I got before I rebuild it from scratch in ActionScript 3.0. Don't worry, it won't take anywhere near as much time as it did the first time, and once it gets started it'll become much easier to work on. Now you can finally be outside, but you can only go in the bottom-left house, which is completely empty.

While I still continue to pick up the odd comment every once in a while on the previous sprite game, they tend to mostly consist of "WHAR BATTLES? =0" anymore. Unfortunately, still no battles. I'm not really looking forward to doing that particular part because there are so many stats and things that come into play that working on it will become really tedious really fast.

And yes, it's still a bit sluggish. This will definitely be solved after the AS3 renovation. Somehow, I've already become more efficient and able than I ever was with AS2. =o

Controls:
Arrow keys: Move
Space bar: Action

aww man another one im going to fave XD, i walked every inch, i checked every corner and i didnt found any bugs, i Love the change from outdoor to indoor, its so quick you hardly even notice i was toying around
going back and forth to see if it got stuck or something and it didnt wich is pretty amazing
also displaying the shadow is a nice touch, just one thing think you can add a *run* button?
cause he moves slow, but the walking speed is pretty normal to others and again nice demo
its really is amazing

just one question, again where are you getting the informaiton to do this? cause i wanna try XD

That's awesome! The controls are hard to play with in my browser 'cause they keep moving the entire screen, but the sprites and everything look great. I'm in the middle of messing with some sprites for an RPG as well (hence the new icon). What program are you using to make the small action sprites, cause photoshop is too advanced for the tiny pixel work I need to do.

Thanks a lot! That's a little odd about the browser though, which one are you using, exactly? When dealing with Flash content, if you click in the Flash window on the page then any keys you press shouldn't affect scrolling or anything.

Quite often I've used Adobe ImageReady CS to do pixel work because you can work with animations in it, though I've found out that it works horrendously in Vista. I actually use Photoshop a lot now for pixel stuff and it works well for me, all you really need to do is use the pencil tool, set the eraser to pencil mode, and zoom way in.

astercrow In reply to Azure-Sky [2007-11-20 01:10:26 +0000 UTC]

Yeahh...... I figured I'd have to be penciling it up in photoshop, but I also have flash so I didn't know if that was an alternative, if other people are using it that way. No need to worry about vista though, this crow's a mac user all the way ^_~ Thanks for the advice!

Thanks, and yeah, this entire thing is unfinished, I just posted this to show I'd made progress since the last time before I started over again. There was going to be a house at the bottom right but I didn't get around to it, and the only house that you can actually go into is the one on the bottom left.

Very powerful looking engine. I'm curious, does it load all of the tiles at runtime, or do you build that at design time?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Azure-Sky In reply to voidSkipper [2007-09-22 23:49:19 +0000 UTC]

I build the whole level at design time. XD And honestly, nothing about this can really be considered "powerful," if anything it barely works, which is why I'm going to rebuild it from scratch in AS3.

Nice, looks pretty good so far Azure, must be a bear to work with though.

Nice movement and motion and nice looking graphics. I have to ask though, did some of these come from RPGMaker resources?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Azure-Sky In reply to hunterbahamut [2007-09-21 07:01:18 +0000 UTC]

Hmm, I've never heard of RPGMaker before, so I'd have to say no. Though, I did end up copying the tree sprite right from the Pokemon games, and the houses are also modified versions of the ones from the same place. Other than that, they're all 100% me.

hunterbahamut In reply to Azure-Sky [2007-09-21 08:23:29 +0000 UTC]

Ah, very cool.
RPGMaker is an odd program, but there are a lot of resources out there for tiles and characters and such so in a pinch if you need something, try looking up so places for that, but of you can, I say stick with doing most of the graphics yourself.

Nice touch on the shadows and how you were able to make the NPC wander yet not go off the map.

Gonna watch you to see the progress of this.

aaarhus [2007-09-20 00:30:37 +0000 UTC]

Hmm...

What I would recommend is that... well, while navigating I noticed that you don't have it to where pressing the direction makes you go on a "square", but more of you keep moving until you let go.

I would try to do something though that makes the area of doors and such more "lenient" in terms of where you have to be at in order to get inside... because it takes a bit of effort to get in, or to go through areas like just walking up the middle if you're not lined up correctly.

That's just my thought on it. I like sprites.

Azure-Sky In reply to aaarhus [2007-09-21 06:39:45 +0000 UTC]

Ah, yeah I noticed that too, and had already made it wider before, because you used to have to be at the exact Y coordinate to get in, which sucked quite a bit. XD So yeah, I'll go and make them even wider next time, thanks a lot for the feedback.

I remember seeing a really neat method of solving that problem in the gameboy Zelda games. Whenever Link got stuck on the edge of a wall, it would nudge him slowly off if you kept pressing against it. e.g. if he got stuck on the top edge of a wall when waking to the left it would bump him upwards if you kept the left key held down.

When I tried my hand at making an amateur flash engine I tried to recreate that feature, but my engine was too shoddy to make it work right :\

Azure-Sky In reply to KreeTheBasilisk [2007-09-29 23:59:32 +0000 UTC]

It took me a couple rereads to get exactly what you were saying but yeah, I do actually remember that and implementing it on the doorways would be a good idea, thanks a lot. But are you also saying that you ended up getting the character stuck on a wall somewhere in this? Because I've never had that problem myself.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

KreeTheBasilisk In reply to Azure-Sky [2007-09-30 09:01:42 +0000 UTC]

I guess I didn't word my explanation very well, maybe I should have said "stuck on a corner" instead.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Azure-Sky In reply to KreeTheBasilisk [2007-09-30 09:24:31 +0000 UTC]

Oh, sorry, I get it now. When I first started out on this a very common problem was that if you bumped into a wall, the character would become fixed in place in one way or another and unable to move away from it, which is how I define stuck. But you were saying not so much that he was actually getting stuck on anything but just bumping into it. Got it.

Azure-Sky In reply to darkdoomer [2007-09-21 06:44:53 +0000 UTC]

Thanks a lot. Though now it's starting to look overly pixelated to me, I'll probably end up raising the resolution to a 1:1 pixel ratio before I finish.
