Description
DONE. Finally finished that little wannabe game thing I've been talking about. I have to apologize to ~StevenRoy for two things on this: one being that by the time I got to his sprite I was completely burned out from having to make eight more frames of animation for the other characters, so I completely half-assed his; there are no walking animations so he just stands still. The other is that I completely forgot to ask for character reference in the journal, and while it wasn't hard to check the galleries of the others whose sprites appear in this, I ended up gleaning what I could from the photo in your avatar for the face close-up.It ended up taking a little while, but I think I covered most of the basics with this. The pokeballs on the table were an example of being able to pick up an item, you can talk to the other characters, and the Pr0st is an example of characters being able to give you items. The walking characters can even walk in and out of the door without error.
The arrow buttons move Az around, the spacebar is the action button, and control acts as the start button. If this runs slowly for anyone at all tell me. I ended up cheating and putting in a little motion blur just for something extra, but I think it may slow it down too much. If this happens to more than one person I'll just take the motion blur out completely.
I may do more with this now that it's there and almost fully functional. I'm open to suggestions.
...IT'S SIX IN THE MORNING. BED.

I didn't actually look that up in any tutorial, it seemed kind of obvious to me all along. XD If you already know how to move the character instead of the map then it's really not hard at all: all you need to do is put the entire level into one movie clip and tell it to move that movie clip in the opposite direction when a directional button is pressed instead of the character.
If you don't, uh... just say so. To keep from writing a long comment I'll just try to explain it in a note.

4 1/2 out of 5 stars. highest rating i have ever given a game that wasnt even a reall game. coolest thing ever. keep up the awesome work

Thanks a lot. And yeah I got a little lazy with the menus, mostly because all you can pick up are Pokemon and there's really nothing you can do with them anyway. I didn't get around to coming up with a battle system for this one, but currently I'm working on another sprite game that will definitely have them and fix everything that's wrong with this one, as well as have a point.
At the moment it looks something like this: [link]

Haha, that's cool. I love the neat reflectioneffect the floor has. This'd make a neat game.
Only one thing I see that maybe should be improved. The "action" and "start" button can intersect with eachother. Like if I have the menu open, and choose items, he can accidently start talking to a NPC he's near. And same that you can open the menu in the middle of a conversation. I don't know if it's a feature you want, but to me it seems as if opening the menu should be disabled during conversations, and starting conversations should be disabled while the menu is open.
Just a thought, hope it helps.

Lol, yeah I actually noticed that right before I submitted this. But since I had finally finished everything after having had it take quite a while to do, I just ended up submitting it anyway and crossing my fingers hoping no one would notice. I had a feeling someone would catch it eventually though.
Stick around, there's a much better one of these in the works.

I would love more.
And... I agree that there should be an option for motion blur.
(I would want for there to be a "customize sprite" option, you know, like putting the files into the same folder as it or something. But... yeah, I just love where it's going as it is. )

Fantastic start.
You should include the option to have motion blur on/off.
Really good job on pretty much everything thats it in it, hit detection, interactiveness and 'level' chaning. This could most definitely be used for some great games.

Not a bad little engine you've got there. It seems to be running rather slow on my computer for some reason (especially when zoomed in; it might be that motion blur effect that's doing it), but otherwise it seems quite nifty. You should be able to make something quite impressive out of this.
You got my face just about right. I would've intended for you to use my avatar image as a reference for it in any case, so there's no need to apologise for that. As for your being burned out after animating the other characters, I can understand that as well. I don't mind being stationary here; roaming around a room at random doesn't seem much like my style anyway, especially when I'm feeling slightly awkward about being the only one in the room without pointy ears or a tail! So no worries. It's an honor to be here.

XD Yeah I thought you'd enjoy it. Though in retrospect I probably should have changed the 'Psst.' to something along the lines of 'So I hear you like Mudkips...' It's still very changeable though if you'd rather.
And yes the motion blur is very glorious. I thought it'd give it that extra degree of smoothness.

Hahahahaha oh my god. That was wonderful. You did a great job editting the sprites to work with this. I laughed at all the quotes. Amazing 8> I'm in love with this. It's adorable, and you are quite talented.
I think Keeoko pretty much covered everything. But also, I think all that black was a bit distracting.

8) Thanks. Yeah, there was a lot of black, but that's pretty much how they do it in the Pokemon games. It'd only be like that indoors though, if I had let you go outside there wouldn't have been any.

This looks like a very promising game engine so far, I can't wait to see more of it in action
What's cool:
- The avatars
- The chat box arrow
- The walking animations and NPC wanderings work perfectly
- The cameos Everyone loves cameos
- The shadows, they're a nice touch
What it needs:
- Faster walking speed, it's achingly slow
- Customizable buttons, Control and Space are too far apart
- The motion blur is a bit distracting, and might be slowing it down
- Larger screen size, it's slightly smaller than the gameboy dimentions
- (Minor detail) The NPC's shadows go over the black area at the bottom of the map instead of under it
What would go well later on:
- Other menu items
- Character profile/info screens
- Item icons in the inventory, a nice way to make them easier to track
- Sounds
Hope that's enough critique

Thanks a lot. 8) And yeah, it looks like I might just have to nix the motion blur thing, or find a more efficient way to do it.
Are you using a laptop to view this? On my computer with a normal tube monitor the shadows don't show up at all in the black and shouldn't since I set their blend properties to multiply. I got onto a laptop to see what this would look like on a different computer and I got what you must be seeing: I could still make out the shadows as very dark gray on black for some reason. I think maybe something about the reflectiveness of the laptop screens might make them visible somehow when they should not be.
Thanks a lot for the crit.

KreeTheBasilisk In reply to Azure-Sky [2007-03-15 14:05:41 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, I'm on a laptop. The shadow-on-black thing doesn't seem to happen to the player, only the NPCs, so I'm guessing it could just be a simple layering glitch. Like I said, it's a minor detail and could probably be ignored.

It's the monitor. A CRT is a lot darker than an LCD or TFT, laptops (and myself) using an LCD. I noticed the same thing, I just didn't say anything cause I didn't feel it necessary :3

Thanks, and yeah I was thinking maybe in the future I might change the perfect square patterns into more horizontally rectangle to help give it more depth. Or even more likely I'll try to get the same 3D effect of the new ones that are coming out for the DS and scrap the pixelatedness.
But yeah, screen size duly noted.

I mentioned the size mainly because I'm an addict to the GB Classic/Color screen and graphics The new GBA ones look okay, but they don't quite have the same "awesomeness" that was in the older games.
