b-Rex — Questioning the Question

Description Throughout the HSC Visual Art making process I initially had difficulty trying to show conceptual strength. This led me to question what the HSC Art Making process was actually about and how could I possibly adhere to its conventions?
Therefore, I represented this ‘Art Making process’ as it is; an exam, and how that has affected me. One of my major influences is ‘Postmodernism’, hence my reasoning for taking this approach in my art making.
Essentially I presented to my audience, the HSC markers my ‘answer’. My answer takes the form of drawing. I like drawing faces, so I did.

Just for anyone one who wanted to read that..
I will explain what its all about.
This was my major work for the NSW HSC. I have small progress amounts already submitted.. but i never got many photos and i was to busy to have time on deviant art to post. The whole 8 month or so expreience was rather traumatic.. from the mounters ripping my artwork, to the printers not printing the top section properly and me have to deal with all of this, without the help of my hopeless teacher, (although mum did help me with all the driving and funding)
It probably isnt worth me going into everything to do with the conflicts with my teacher.. her not liking my work, along with lots of other rubbish... but basically i was having troubling coming up with an idea as we had to have a CONCEPT as well as technical resolution...
the blurb above basically explains my art work... if you can see in the dodgy picture.. the section on the top of the art work is me making my art into an "EXAM" as such.. and yeah.. basically i was just being a smart arse to the Board of Studies because i didnt know how to win.. there isnt an exact formula or "answer" as such for art.. you pretty much just have to fluke it.
ANYWAY... by the end of it my teachers didnt expect high results or anything special... 50% of the course is theory.. which i didnt lift a pen thoughout the entire year... my teacher was a poo and i couldnt learn anything from her...
so i had terrible hope even though i had slight confidence in my practical, which i did in about one month, (we had 8)

and the result you ask?
as it turned out i came in the top 5% of my state for the prac...(about 8000 kids doing Visual Arts in NSW) which i couldnt believe and had my work nominated to be on display in the Art Gallery of NSW in an exhibition called Art Express. so by this stage i didnt care about my theory.. which i was rather scared about...
however... in the end.. i did quite well in theory too... scoring a nice 94% in totally (both prac and theory) so art, as much as i regreted the experience.. didnt turn out to be so bad.
Sorry to have to brag about my self... but i guess there is no other way.. you are not reading it anyway.
i didnt get into art express.. but im happy all the same.

this is a photo of a photo of my works.
the photos are about the size of match boxes... however the drawings themselfs are about my height.. well about 1meter and a half.
i just drew them in a range of different pencils
ill try get better photos.
sorry about the rant.
thanks.

well you have to get above i think its 46/50 for your prac, they usually select the top 10%, which can be about 800 works, so from there they have to narrow it down
they dont necessary pick the highest mark ones for the gallery, but the ones that suit what they want that particular year.
goodluck.

beautiful.
ms.munce left - and now i am just barely surviving with ms.young as our substitute.
she's ruining my concepts for my BOW, i'm becoming quite hysterical.

but young did mention you in class, and i got all giddy because 'i know this artist!'

omg.
i feel SOO sorry for you...
but i guess all i can say is..
if it wasnt for mrs young... i wouldnt have been driven to insanity.. which is what led me to this idea/concept!
so it saddens me to think she had part in this

OMG so what did she say about me ??? lol

(and thank you)

yeah.. its funny you say that. ... but when i submitted these i looked at the third one and though.. what the helll why do those lips look so dark...
they either arnt normally like that.. or i looked at them in a different way..
i was scared to do lots of face shading.. but i should have done more around the mouth of that one.
thank you though

well firstly i have to say that your art is amaaazing and i am jealous!
secondly, i read everything, hahah.
and also that i don't know what else to say because i'm quite speechless.
but you can assume that i pretty much love your art to pieces.
well done on doing so well! i actually clapped when i read about the top 5% dealio. woo for you!: D
that is really annoying about that person messing up your stuff, especially as you've gone through so much.

i remember when i was doing my gcses in art, i was so upset because i moved around lots, and had to go to different schools, so i missed so much coursework and i could no way catch up with everyone else. i remember when it came to doing my final piece, and everyone else had ages to come up with something and plan it..and i had far less. so when it came to it, i had less practice in what iwas doing, and did way worse than i could have done. i know i was capable of soo much more though. i did a screenprint of a forest with tropical flowers, woo! ..but right oppisite was this girl doing the same sort of thing..but hers was so so so amazing, and it really put me down. annoying when that happens, huh? aaanyway, i'm going on a bit. just saying that there always seems to be a lot of annoyance around, one way or another. i had a horrible teacher too. it just doesnt help, hey?

wow thank you for your lovely comment..
im glad you read it.. well maybe i am
thanks... its nice to know when people appriciate it.. i always get so nervous showing people...
well i didnt before it was marked.. because of all the pressure...
but i was finally brave enough to put it up here..

thats a shame about your experience... but i guess at least you know you have more in you.. and at the end of the day what can a stupid mark say about someones artist abilitly... it all comes down to their personal preference really.
art teachers are poo.. which is why i am now studying and uni to become one!! the irony.
THANKS again!

sound-attack In reply to b-Rex [2006-02-09 10:08:25 +0000 UTC]

ah right, glad you did!

and yes, i got a really bad result (what with missing so much and not being able to catch up) but i've often been complimented on my work ..i dunno why, hahah. so yeah, that was really annoying. it's so dumb that if you get a bad mark at..anything, people just instantly think you're rubbish, without even taking a look at your work. i just don't see a point in that. i mean, i understand that everybody could improve in some way, but bad marks doesn't always mean bad work, right?

oh yeah, i only ever had one good art teacher, but he was a bit of a weirdo..which i think was what made him good, hahah. also, he gave really good constructive criticism, and helped you see how you were doing something wrong.i don't like teachers that are set in their ways and think that only one style is good, and if you don't do that, then you are bad and should stop arting! gah narrow-mindedness really annoys me.

oooh good luck with that!
sorry for this being so long.

well done with all ur work!! i was the same as you for 2004- for preselection of artexpress... i tell myself that all the great artists were always rejected during their lives, and it was only towards the end of their lives/when they were dead that they gained recognition... lol... not that i seriously believe that i am a fabulous artist. btw- youre drawings are really amazing! where do you live? you should try enter you works into the mosman youth art prize/exhibition, and if in the area, the kurringai/roseville art centre also has exhibitions for the hsc art students this time of the year i think...

b-Rex In reply to isitjax [2006-02-08 09:13:08 +0000 UTC]

thank you. and well done to you also.
i entered my art in a local exhibition with a chance to win $1000.... most of the art works were shit and the crappy ones one... one really good one was left unnoticed. so i feel that it was ok not to win!.
but thanks for letting me know.. probably a little far for me however i do know of those areas.
with the previous exhibition, the organisation was so shocking and my work was slightly damaged that i swore i wouldnt enter it in anything again! (unless of course it WAS the Gallery of NSW)
but thanks anyway~! is your major work posted on da?

im doing art theory/arts... and im going in on monday 13th to enrol.. still need to find out about getting credit cuz i was at usyd last year... what subjects are u doing?
