Description
So this is Mechanical Memory key Number 4. It has taken an age to finish (approx 10-12 hours) mainly due to the detail and having to harvest the pieces from the watches myself - I think I probably used parts from around 6 different pocket watches (from brand new ones to watches over 100 years old). The key is made out of Padauk wood & has approximately 10 Ruby's which look great when the key catches the light, & when the Keys plugged into a USB, it glows green from underneath the gears giving the key a good sense of movement.
EDIT: Just to clarify, the gears themselves do not move, but the light gives the appearance of movement. I'm hoping that in the future I will get the gears to move, but currently its not possible.

That is totally neat! I hope you get to make one where the gears actually move soon, that would be some awesome sauce there

Ahh, I think I love this one more than the first one I saw!
Though I don't know how you'd ever get the gears to move, say, with it being plugged in, since there isn't really anything moving in a usb, y'know? The only way I think you could manage that would be if you had some seperate bit, like a tiny motor that could be powered by the computer while it's plugged in, or have a seperate tiny battery for that. That's extremely complicated though, probably more than making the thing as it is! I guess you could do something where the gears could move freely (if they can't already) if you were to try to move them with your finger, or if you moved the stick around or something? I dunno, just shooting out wild ideas here

The detailing is pretty amazing. How did you get the carving into the wood to allow for adding the gears?

what kinds of watches do you usually find all these gears in?
hrmgg these are so cool
Recently in my class I was trying to do a painting project about clock parts, but after breaking apart more than 12 watches I only found one that actually had gears
all the others looked like they had some sort of plastic-type chip (which looked nearly identical throughout)

I think this has to be my favorite piece in your gallery, but the whole series is great also. I think this one would look really cool as a lighter as well. Maybe you should start steam-punking zippos!

Amusingly enough I'm about to create a new case for a memory key in wood! How appropriate that I stumble upon your inspirational work now!
Your design is wonderfully complex and I really like the handle you've added on this one. :]

Suggestion for creating movement... Tap into the +5v feed for the USB and have a small motor.

i think that this key is currently my favorite out of all you have made because of the shape. It looks easy to grip, the wood is a nice color, the cover piece fits very well and looks like it's practically seamless, and it looks like a lot of love has gone into it
great job!

How much do you usually sell these for? They're amazing! Pieces of art on their own and the added bonus of function. Really good idea and great execution on all of the ones you've made. I really love all of them. Great work.

I'm afraid that my keys don't currently move but the LED activity light gives the key the appearance of movement - I'm working on a fully functional one, but currently its quite far off! Thanks...

It looks cool either way. You get a functioning one. You GOT to post it... on You Tube or something.
