Personality:
Despite how he appears to outsiders, Desmond is a light hearted person. Or so he portrays himself. When first meeting others, he tends to come off very laid back and unconcerned with things going on around him, unless the situation is one that calls for more seriousness than he’d usually use (i.e. any situation that could cause serious injury and/or death to himself or others around him (both known and otherwise)).

He has a seemingly bottomless pit of a stomach, and tends to eat whenever he has a spare moment to do so. Even if he doesn’t have a spare moment – he’s perfectly happy to eat and carry on conversation at the same time. For this reason, along with his smart aleck ways and tendency to act like he has no respect/need for authority aside from being pointed in the right direction by a captain, people tend to describe him as immature. Thorough and a great soldier, but immature.

If one takes the time to actually get acquainted with him beyond the surface, it becomes apparent there is a lot more going on behind the snappy comebacks and easygoing manners. Apparently, Desmond tends to have a lot on his mind he doesn’t admit to, and is something of a closet strategist and seemingly constantly thinking over things, particularly things that tend to sit wrong with him or pique his curiosity.

Background:
Desmond grew up in a small house with a big family – his mother, father, and 5 siblings. Through much of his childhood and into his early teens, he had a hard time differentiating himself from the rest of the kids. Until his mid-teens, this pattern continued, before Desmond caught wind of something that would truly set him apart from his siblings – joining the Irish Republican Army.

The first time he attempted to join up, he was laughed back into the proverbial hole he’d crawled out of. He was a scrawny kid, underage, he was more of a liability than an added aid. That didn’t stop him, however, and after a few more years of building himself up to be, while hard to tell, imposing, he made to join up again, and was accepted into the ranks of the IRA at the age of 20.

For the next 4 years Desmond worked as a soldier, fighting for the beliefs of the IRA, learning his way around a gun or two, and quickly picking up field tactics and strategies that any military personnel would receive in any truly acknowledged army or military at a national level.

It was while he was with the IRA that Desmond gained his penchant for constantly wearing a bulletproof vest underneath his leather jacket, a vintage piece that he’d found in good condition and has kept much the same since the day he bought it. It is also when he gained his affinity for hand guns, particularly his Colt 1911.A1 .45 caliber hand gun.

However, when the IRA was decommissioned of their weaponry in July of 2005, he was among the handful of soldiers who decided that acting without arms was, well, definitely not as fun. They ended up resigning their service to the IRA, and one of the nights following when they were being a rowdy crowd in a local pub, one of the men, jokingly, brought up the rumours he’d heard of an organization that was looking to hire those with police or military prowess. Most of the men, including Desmond, brushed it off as hardly worth a second thought.

But not for much longer. By age 26, Desmond was boarding a plane to Washington, DC, and making his application to join the ranks of the Reapers.
