Description
O.k for anyone interested in how I made the Jake pen pot here it is. They're really bad pictures and not as many as I would like to make a proper tutorial but I'm sure you'll get the drift.1. Here are the ingredients.
Some really tough gardening wire, this stuff is very strong, you can bend it with your hands but need pliers to make any small or tight bends.
Pliers and wire cutters
Wire mesh to help the Sculpey stick to the armature
Sculpey. I'm using 2 different kinds here, Sculpey original and Super Sculpey firm. Why? Because Sculpey Original is much cheaper so I often use it to bulk things out, but it's horribly soft so I use Super Sculpey anywhere I want detail. Also Super Sculpey firm is harder and stronger once baked.
That box is full of sculpting tools, they are all useful in some way but you really donβt need tons of tools to sculpt, I just seem to have some kind of addiction to buying tools and equipment
Not pictured here but you'll need some tin foil to pad out the armature.
Sand paper to get a really smooth finish, I use a variety of grits from very coarse to very fine wet and dry paper.
I also use some solvents to help smooth the Sculpey, I use Turpentine substitute (I only apply this very sparingly as it really eats into the Sculpey, use too much and youβll ruin detail and be left with a sloppy mess) I also use rubbing alcohol, this helps smooth it out and I also use it in a spray bottle to spray onto the sculpt after I've been using he turpentine substitute as it helps evaporate it off the surface.
Paints. I use acrylic paints through my airbrush and to hand paint. I also use a spray primer, one made for plastics, I've been told that some spray primers can deteriorate the surface of Sculpey so you're best of getting one made specifically for plastics. I buy mine from my local auto repair shop.
2. I took a piece of wire and bent it around a cylindrical object to get the rough shape of Jakes body. Here I am using a tub of cat treats (I'm not advertising these, other cat treats are available...... but these ones are really tasty)
3. I cut some strips of mesh and shaped them around the wire frame. This will help the foil grip to the wire.
4. Here I've wrapped some tin foil around the wire and added more mesh for the Sculpey to grip to. I've also started to build up a bit of Sculpey on the bottom.
5. First layer of Sculpey. It's very rough at this point, its really hard to get Sculpey Original into nice smooth shapes as its just so incredibly soft, the slightest bit of pressure leaves a mark in the surface.
Next I put it in the oven for the first time, once it's hard I can then build up more Sculpey on top, it'll be much easier to get a nice smooth shape.
6. Look what Sculpey does to my cutting mat! the oils must be dissolving the paint that the grid lines are made with....weird

Ahahaha. I think it is the turpenoid that ate up your lines on the matt.
Thanks for the tutorial. You are sweet.
When I used sculpey, I used Krylon sandable primer and also steel wool to sand besides sandpaper.

The mat thing was before I used any solvents, very strange.

That proves that Sculpey is just so toxic. Hope you switch to wax soon for your kitties sake....

Yeah you're right, but I think I'll always use Sculpey for some projects as I don't want to cast one of a kind sculpts (I really don't enjoy casting very much, it's such a pain in the arse, and it's pretty expensive) but I'd definitely like to limit it's use, I have to have doors and windows open when I bake it so no fumes get around the house/cats, not good in winter

Yeah I know waht you are sayoing. I just hate sculpey so much now. I would rather use ceramics for one off project. I hate casting as well that is why I got a guy who does that for me. I did my share.
Also your oven will not be safe for food use after you bake sculpey in it unless you clean the crap out of the oven. Some people boil the piece in a pot for the reason.
