Description quickie sketch I tinkered with tonight. I've always loved the elven lands in Lord of the Rings, moreso from reading the books than even from the movies. The reason is simple enough, I like to imagine them n my mind, not imagined for me. Mind you I fell in love with the designs of the elven lands in all 3 films, though I think I imagined the Gray Havens a bit more like lothlorien, ie the buildings to look like ship hulls protruding from the rockface. In this case I replaced the rock with a waterfall. The buildings in this sketch are meant to be protruding from a waterfall..doesn't work as well in pencil as I would have hoped. BUT it was just fun nonetheless to draw as there are no boundaries persay...you can just..draw and let it take form.

Wonderful! Just wonderful.... I wish they could have used this in LOTR... it must be breathtaking to actually see a landscape like this.

OMG I love your concept! I have to admit, I think your design is closer to how I imagined the Gray Havens from the books than the movie version.
It's reminiscent of Rivindel's elegant architechture, in a valley with waterfalls.

Just a thought: can you imagine building it? That's why we love elves, I guess... they're talented.

Building it would be a PAIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIN...but then the pyramids..stonehenge..heck all the Cathedrals in Europe are simply jaw dropping work for an age before the insane technology we have today!

That's true... Imagining building those collosal things hurts my brain. But building it under a waterfall... Daaaaang.
But, hey, they're elves. Therefore they can defy physics. *coughLegolasinthemoviecough*

Wow! That's very good! Something like this is very hard to pull off in pencil..which is probably why I tend to shy away from stuff like this. Awesome job, it looks great

It puts me in mind of Waterfall City from the book Dinotopia by James Gurney. It looks very Elven to be sure. I think it came out wonderfully. The swan shape might need to be darkened up a bit though, it grabs the eye immediately and distracts a bit from the rest of the drawing. The biggest building looks like it has elf ears ; But it is very waterfally-looking and vair vair nice, ms balaa.

I could see the elvish look to the structure, even before I read your comment, I was going to say "Those awnings almost look like elf ears!" now I feel silly.

Lovely sketch!

Is the swan slightly disproportionate? The wings look very big...

Very nice. I've always wondered what would have happened if Tolkien had actually set Middle Earth in an alternative world instead of as part of our 'history'.

Very stunning and lovely! Is that a peacock facing the swan over the bridge?

Love the hint of sunlight shafts filtering through to touch the city, deftly done. Also enjoy the smaller swans on the rooftops that look like they belong on the prow of a ship. Hoping to see the finished version soon!

this is so AWESOME, it's like someone (being you) innvaded my brain and stole my idea of perfect elven city, and then pasted it onto a piece of paper, and through some course of events, ended up here, only infinately better ^_^ i love it.

That looks so awesome... I need to design stuff like this, especially for my Jennaei people...they live in mountains ranges so they live among caves and cliffs. I love the swan over the gates.
