Description Ok forgive the humm, dull title. Usually when I finish a piece, the name just jumps out at me within a matter of seconds and always seems to click.

Anyway I know there are a few mistakes in this picture but I doscourage critique for two reasons. 1 already know where the mistakes are and the reason im uploading is because otherwise they will drive me insane to the point of doing something about it and I just want to consider it finished and two it was a result of a two hour free draw that I didnt expect to go ANYWHERE, so the fact that it came even this far stunned even me(especially in the short amount of time)

Alrighty now for the formal description. After my last project involving a panther I had dozens of pictures of black panthers sitting on my comp that I studied to get the anatomy and fur of the panther for the commission right. So I was rather bored and looking at them again and something random struck me. I was suddenly amazed by just how light can play off of a black panther's coat and based on the surrounding light make them appear less than black. A few photos I had really showed off the spots of a black panther when lighting hits them and what for whatever reason I found even more amazing was the almost greenish hue their coats and still carry a silverish sheen on top of that hue! The spots show through very well too! So I decided to experiment for myself with the idea. I rather like how it turned out too!

Edit: Yes I did use a reference for the initial concept, specifically for the intense expression .

Prints: Yes, 8x10 10$US, plus shipping. Print will not be watermarked.

Sorry folks, I never wanted to watermark my work, but my hand was twisted. This is my income and when people steal my work, they steal food from my mouth.

I dont think the fur is entirelly black either, maybe it's clear and the light manipulates it to appear black (like Polar Bears, except white). Fantastic job, you never cease to amaze me with your skills!

Beautiful picture brovo at the indepth study you did of this creature you captured it well and I love the snarl I have trouble getting the snarl down.
Umm I love this it gorg, but I didn't know if you knew this put Calling a Black Pather is false they are actually Leopards or Jaguars that had a mutation. Kinda like the white tiger gene. I am a huge Big Cat lover I did alot of reports of them in my High school science classes. I am so glad you made the observation of the spots and there really isn't such a thing as a Black panther. Panthers are actually onther name for Pumas, cougers, Mt Lions Etc. Don't feel bad it's a common misconception. I didn't know that untill my teens so alot of big cat lovers don't know this. I just happen to run across it. As far a I know there isn't a Black Pantehr ever found on record.

Sorry hope I did't bore you to much with this little usless facts. I am full of them especally on big cats.

Not boring me at all. I've heard that before somewhere as well as the fact on white tigers ^_^. I just find it easier to call it a black panther for the sake of most people's understanding of the breeds. Thank you for the tid bit, much obliged!

NP ! I like to correct people on the mistake but sometimes people misunderstand me and think I am trying to be a know it all. I just like to correct mis info whenI see it and I hope people would do the same for me. Ahh well. Great job . Ohh and White tigers are only found in Bangels another misconception is that the White Tigr is Siberean not so they are orange.

balaa In reply to WhitelightWolf [2005-04-06 19:00:57 +0000 UTC]

Really, just study real life, how shadows and light play off animals/people what have you. How I do it, is just build the dimension as I go along, start with a very flat image and slowly work in the shadows to kinda give em depth..then add fur..then add highlights.

Panthers are gorgeous creatures. I agree. An all black panther is a lie. There must be a 'layer' of spots, either on the 'skin' of the animal, or embedded in the fur. They are beautiful animals! Id never attempt to draw one. This is very lovely. You've catpured a snarl very nice. Love the background too, it gives you a sense of the panthers mood.
