The title just came to mind and for some reason just seemed right for this picture.This is my first time attempting to render snow leopards so I can almost guarantee there are small flaws here and there. Mostly this picture was colored as a spur of the moment type thing. I wanted to try my hand at snow leopards as Ive never really drawn them, muchless tried to color them! It turns out their fur is trickier to render than I thought! It took me a few failures to finally get a decent grasp of how to render the fur. All in all this experiment turned out rather nicely. The background actually came together easiest of all. I probably spent in the neighborhood of an hour on the bg itself but far more on the leopards themselves. The male(above) is supposed to be sort of squinting, ie eyes not all the way open (because yes usually snow leopards eyes are rather big..which I like!)
I hope to have an excuse in the very near future to play with these critters in ps some more! I really enjoyed this piece and so in turn I hope you all do as well.

To an extent they ...hmm lesse if I can explain. Before I start a piece I research the animal I am gonna paint..so in this case snow leopards. I find and save a ton of pics to help me with anatomy, deciding on colors, mood, background ideas. Finally when I am done researching I do a prelim sketch...99/100 I don't use a straight reference...rather ill look at one photo for say..the paw...another photo for the face...another for the tail etc..just to help sorta guide me and ensure my anatomy is as close to true life as possible(and I cant say I even succeed half the time XD). Once I do the prelim sketch I start coloring, usually I have 5-6 pics to help me with the main body fur..just kinda getting the colors right..and sometimes I take those references and edit the colors to suit what I see in my mind better. At this point I dont usually have any clue what I am gonna do for a bg. So while im working on the main characters, I try and decide what I want for the bg. Then usually end up trying 3-5 bg's until one 'clicks' with the mood/atmosphere that I am looking for. I dont know if that even makes sense...but I suppose in short, yes and no would answer your question XD.

That's beautiful- the sentiment and the art. The male (at the back I presume) looks so protectiv of his mate (I... assume again lol) and they look so peaceful in what seems like a silent, glacial paradise

This picture is beautiful. You have such a great talent and eye for big cats, while looking realistic it still has a very artisitc, almost high level cartoony feel that just looks great and really impresses me. And the BG, while simple adds in its simplicity. Because its all blurred it can actually be mistaken as a real backdrop, at least in my eyes. Although you had to try several times it really paid off with the overall look of the snow leopards, its so attractive to stare at. Amazing work.
