Description
'Simbelmynรซ'Been trying to convince myself to work more real media again. Before I ever touched digital I worked in acrylic..colored pencil and pastel. But that was looong long ago and I have since gotten very rusty.
The problem, for me, with real media is...space. I do not have the space to work real media. My living quarters are fairly cramped and sooo though I have an art desk..it is usually buried under my pile of art/framing supplies. and so usually my bed serves as my impromptu desk...which works..but I tend to get frustrated with the long setup/breakdown times :/...and it also prevents me from working big. I often lose motivation to paint once I start setting up. But I was determined to at least finish one real media piece to showcase at Califur..and so here she is.
"Simbelmynรซ"
size: 12x6"
medium: acrylic and acrylic ink on hot press watercolor paper.
Prints: 8x10 upon request (10$ US +s&h)

This is such a beautiful piece Balaa
May I ask what you used to color this? Like...did you use a very tiny brush or something even smaller to do the little thin pieces of fur?

used a fairly small pointed brush and acrylic ink for the fine details ..acrylic ink is very opaque and very thin so you can really push the limit on how fine the brush strokes are. This was my first real experiment with it and I loved the acrylic inks to death!

how did the acrylic ink work out for you? i've never used it before but people recommend it. your results are certainly marvelous.

Oh I really enjoyed it! I loved how opaque and thin it is..you can put down fairly thinned out washes or solid color washes. I only used black and white but I loved them both. I use golden fluid acrylics..which on their own are fairly thin viscosity...but wow the acrylic ink is even thinner and dries out slower (which is always a plus with paint as expensive as it is).

I always loved the symbolism behind the flower in the Tolkien Universe..the word 'evermind' just seemed somehow appropriate. I am not sure exactly why it clicked for me..but it did. I realize in the stories the flower grew on the tombs and graves of the departed...but I took to the less morbid symbolism of the flower ^_^...so delicate but evoking of emotion and memory.

Wow, extremely good piece of work. I adore the fur - the texture is well presented. It looks like you spent many hours on that!
The spine does seem rather twisted, however I don't know if that's to do with the position that the cat's lying in? It's snout appears rather dog like because of it's length, but again that could be the breed of cat you were using as reference, I cannot jump to conclusions. Your chosen background is simple and yet effective; I always appear to struggle when placing my characters into a setting and the like.
I find it a shame that you have not had the opportunity to work traditionally for a long time - from this piece you are indeed talented at it! I am very much a traditional fan, so to see work like this truely inspires me. Keep up the good work, and I would hope to see more work like this from you in the future if you find the time to do it!

^_^ thanks for the encouragement darling. I have a few things but just silly cartoons, nothing thats hitting my core making me leave the drawing around where I can always see it and be proud of it. It will pass shortly I'm sure.

I sort of understand your frustration. I have to have things set up just right or else I can't draw. Or won't...><. But this turned out beautifully! I can hardly believe it's real media.

Your acrylic work is just as lovely and detail-oriented as any of your digital pieces. I adore the way you paint fur. The amount of effort into the tiny strokes makes it look thick and soft, and your big cats always make me want to pet them. In addition, the sweep of Simbelmyne's back is gorgeous! It's a position only a cat could be comfortable in, and her expression makes me wonder if we've disturbed an otherwise successful hunt. *grin*
I have a similar space situation when it comes to non-digital media. I'm pretty much limited to what I can hold in my lap that won't stain the rug. I miss watercolors because I have no space to stretch the paper, or put a large painting while in progress.
