Description 'Simbelmynรซ'

Been trying to convince myself to work more real media again. Before I ever touched digital I worked in acrylic..colored pencil and pastel. But that was looong long ago and I have since gotten very rusty.

The problem, for me, with real media is...space. I do not have the space to work real media. My living quarters are fairly cramped and sooo though I have an art desk..it is usually buried under my pile of art/framing supplies. and so usually my bed serves as my impromptu desk...which works..but I tend to get frustrated with the long setup/breakdown times :/...and it also prevents me from working big. I often lose motivation to paint once I start setting up. But I was determined to at least finish one real media piece to showcase at Califur..and so here she is.

"Simbelmynรซ"
size: 12x6"
medium: acrylic and acrylic ink on hot press watercolor paper.
Prints: 8x10 upon request (10$ US +s&h)

your choice of lighting is probably my fave part of this piece, it lights her face and moves your eye down her back in just the right way. I also liked how you chose to fill the whole page/canvas/whatever with her body, and gave very little of her environment, it lets a viewer wonder around her body and admire how well you painted her fur ^^

a beautiful piece

Just curious.. (I always ask a lot of questions).. Bagheera probably has told you that.. XD

How much would you be willing to sell the original for? (Feel free to note me if this is an awkward question that you want to answer elsewhere.)

at this point I honestly have no idea x). I will be taking it with me to Califur but likely setting it as NFS until I decide on a price..and if I can part with it. Oh I do make an atrocious business person!

Snala In reply to balaa [2008-05-08 06:58:27 +0000 UTC]

If you do decide on a price...
Keep it to yourself.

The best piece of advice given by one of my art professors was
"Never put a price on your work, chances are that it will be lower than others are willing to pay, especially if it is in a gallery. When they ask how much, just ask them "What are you willing to pay for it?" or something along those lines."

This piece of advice was later confirmed by a student who sold a piece for $5,000... his price that he was going to set, and that he thought was too high, was $500.

*more curious questions*
Do you show at a gallery ever?

balaa In reply to Snala [2008-05-08 07:22:25 +0000 UTC]

I haven't yet! I don't know how to go about breaking into the upscale gallery game. Ive talked to some smaller galleries about selling my work through them and I may shop around and see who could give me the best consignment rate for my work.

Thank you for the advice! At cons it's hard not to set a price on work you want to sell . BUT we will see if this one catches any interest, maybe folks will throw numbers at me and based on that I can guage what to price it as an opening bid at Further Confusion.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Snala In reply to balaa [2008-05-08 19:19:44 +0000 UTC]

you could also do an anonymous bidding (I think that is what it is called), with people leaving a name, number and how much they are willing to pay (maybe in a box), then whoever ends up willing to pay the highest amount winning.

Just a thought. Regardless, good luck!

Ah Symbelmyne...one of the most beautiful names ever to grace a Tolkien novel.

This is great, and I am quite pleased to see you work in real media...it's becoming a lost art really. Even I am caving to digital(though, my reason is because we bought a house and have to move- so all my stuff is already packed). I have a lot to learn about digital media!

I think this would make a beautiful print...I'm sure you'll make a mint at the con

I enjoy digital still but I did truly miss real media..although with space constrictions and lighting that is less than optimal it is still hard for me to get back into it in the scope and scale I'd like to do it in. Thank you for your kind thoughtful comment.

I understand completely. I've been dying to try oil painting, but we've been stuck in this blasted apartment. We are in the last half of escrow for our new house, and the great thing is that I actually get to use the extra bedroom we have as an art studio.

I think I'll always prefer to use traditional media- it works better with my gimpy hand, and I enjoy(absurd as it is) getting dirty, and having to pick acrylic paint from under my nails lol.

I hope you can get a groove going!

Michael

not absurd at all! Those things are the very things I forgot I missed! I was never shy about getting paint on my clothes..and more often than not in my hair..which happens to be very long..which makes brushing ..a colorful..adventure! I'd love to have more room..to just leave everything out instead of having to put everything away everytime I decide I am done painting for the day. C'est la vie, maybe one day x). Congrats on the new home, hope it turns out to be everything you hoped for and more!

Thank you...I can't wait to get in.

You know, I would do the same thing- leaving everything out...but I would try to leave it all on a single fold-out tv tray(the wood ones). They don't take up all that much space, and it beats the hell out of having to clean up! I don't know if that would work for you, but they are pretty common at garage sales

Goshawk [2008-05-07 05:03:35 +0000 UTC]

Wow! I thought this was digital at first. It's nice to see your uber-detailed colour work again!
For some reason, I love the eyes! The little details of the highlights really make them look real and touchable.

I have a couple of things to critique. The muzzle is rather long (have you been working on a lot of canines recently?), and the forehead juts out a little too squarely. Snow leopard muzzles are kind of delicate and their noses are small; I'm guessing it's an adaptation to the cold. Snow leopard facial anatomy is quite different from the other big cats... it's hard. [link] has many good photos that you could use for reference. That said, you still paint a much better snow leopard than I can......
Also, I think this piece could do with some stronger shadows/darker blacks, especially around where her abdomen meets the ground, just to make it pop more with contrast, you know?

I hope my critique helps; otherwise I just wasted a couple minutes typing this up
And did I mention that I adore the amount of fur detail in this painting? Amazing as ever.

balaa In reply to Goshawk [2008-05-07 05:18:44 +0000 UTC]

the painting actually has quite a bit more contrast in person...not sure why I could not make it scan properly and Im having issues calibrating the color on my new monitor..the prints I ran turned out more washed out than it looks on screen. As for the muzzle yes. it is a tad long, agreed ...I actually didnt even notice this til after finishing and looking at the original sketch for the painting and the muzzle was more proportioned..as well as the nose being smaller. So I suppose its live and learn . Thanks for taking the time to comment and give me something to chew on

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Goshawk In reply to balaa [2008-05-07 05:49:45 +0000 UTC]

Ah... I hate it when that happens. I have trouble sometimes also because I work on a plasma screen, so the contrast and colour can be distorted >
lol My finished pictures never look the same as the sketches... my pieces have a tendency to develop a life of their own and mutate.
No problem! I like being able to help fellow artists improve; I miss my art class... I improved a lot over a couple of years because of peer critiques. Having other sets of eyes looking at your work also gives you a way to discover things you didn't notice.

Oh, I forgot to mention before that I know what the name is from! LOTR for the win!

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

balaa In reply to Goshawk [2008-05-07 06:47:27 +0000 UTC]

absolutely! I have a few very good friends whose critique I trust and value dearly. I know if I ask they will not sugarcoat things for me and tell me like it is. Hey I don't always want to hear it even ..we can be rather prickly about our art..but in the end I am grateful to them for their honesty. Haha I noticed the discrepancy in the face as I was masking it off to paint the background...but honestly I was already getting tired of the piece at that point and so I know going back to fix it would probably have ended with it being worse off than before. I do have another snow leopard piece in the works, which I hope to work on soon and I plan to pay better attention to the face . (I really should work on other animals instead of just big cats...oh woe)

Thanks again, well appreciated...and haha think you are only the second person to comment on the name!

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Goshawk In reply to balaa [2008-05-07 17:11:35 +0000 UTC]

Since I'm at a college that doesn't have an art programme, there aren't many good artists here, so I haven't gotten good critiques in a while... of course, I haven't done much art since being here, but I do keep up a sketchbook.
I need to draw more animals than birds... I want to learn reptiles! I'm decent at big cats....... most of the time. You should try learning horses! They have very interesting anatomy.

lol really? I would have thought there would be more LOTR fans around here...
