Description
Shabaha breathed a sigh of relief. She'd had two cubs, a male and a female, and they had been healthy. Her generation had struggled with that, with their time in the Outlands and their unhealthy diet and lack of basic needs. Straightening, she smiled as Queen Kiara entered, accompanied by her brother and his Queen, Rani. Behind them, Prince Koro trailed, the dark furred cub seeming less than pleased to be here."I apologize for our entrance, Shabaha. We weren't sure if Rani would be cleared to travel, and she wanted to be here."
With Kions words, Shabaha stole another look at the lioness, wincing in sympathy. She was beyond heavily pregnant, looking as though she had reached the point of misery. Rani stretched down, wincing slightly.
"I expect we will be here longer than planned, as I don't think I will be able to make the journey back before my time has come. We'll have to have our second litter here." At her words, Kiara quickly extended her head and spoke to her majordomo, sending for Rafiki to be ready for more cubs. As they settled down, Kiara stared at the cubs, her ears flicking back and forth as her expression remained carefully neutral. Kion nudged her as Rani introduced Koro to his betrothed Malene and her littermate Mabula, and the former lion guard leader's attention shifted to his son for a brief moment as the reaction of the cub filled the cave. Koro looked utterly repulsed at the idea of a betrothed and voiced this loudly, but then, he was only five. In time he would grow into the idea.
Kion stared at his littermate as she sniffled, and was alarmed to find tears rolling down her face. He whispered to her, making sure to not draw attention to them, "Sis? What is it?"
"When... when will it be my turn? To have the babies? My turn to welcome little bundles of life and potential into the world and have all my firends and family happy and congratulating me? Have I done something? Are the spirits punishging me? All I've ever done is live for my pride, for my subjects. I've been married to a lion -a good lion- for years. We stopped a war. We united the prides and began an entire generation where there are no threats or violence- the first generation to grow up peacefully since our Grandfather was a cub!- and still I suffer from an empty womb. I just want what everybody else has! All my friends now have cubs. It's miserable to not have what everybody else seems to get so easily."
Kion nipped her ear in sympathy. He knew she was hurting, and while another lion might have taken her jealousy and envy personally -what with he and Rani expecting their second litter anytime now- he just ached for her.
"I believe it will happen, Kiara. Perhaps you just need to wait a bit longer."
"I don't want to wait longer..." Kiara whimpered, her voice trembling. "I just... it isn't fair... I just..." Her voice broke, and she bit back a sob, choosing to leave the nursery before she drew attention.
