FINALLY, after weeks of this being half-finished, i've got it done ;D
Sorry for the wait Mendo!
There are 3 more for Lillan to follow, so this is just the start of the Grant/Lillan relationship - I wonder how it'll go
(Hope ya like it, Mendo! )

To have YFS send one of their mares for the summer training camp was both daunting and exciting prospect for the BS team.

As the summer sun shone over the Rocky Mountains, the BS crew took their new mounts out of their stables for the first time and got to work getting used to them.
Grant, in charge of Lillan from YFS and Abby from Misty Meadow Stables, took up his seat on the beautiful palomino mare and set about trotting her around the Dressage outdoor arena. The first thing he noticed about her, which was also what he had been told to work with her on, was the fact that the mare, while looking dainty, gorgeous and like she’d be pretty agreeable under-saddle, was practically a skyrocket on four hooves.
Within ten minutes, Lillan was cantering around the arena with a gorgeous, lollopy stride, like a true Dressage horse, but with Grant fighting for control. Lillan was also throwing in little bucks for Grant to sit, which wasn’t exactly something her rider wasn’t used to, but he certainly wasn’t expecting it! From appearing like a princess’ pony to acting as if she had a little princess complex, Lillan certainly made an impact.
Frankie would usually have been telling Grant how to ride her properly, but instead was tackling his own mount, Cosmic, and was far too caught up in that to tell Grant what he was doing wrong.

So, he persevered.
And was chucked off half an hour later.

Lillan, it seems, simply got bored of Grant trying his hardest to have her working softer in the bit, and was tirelessly flexing her neck and asking her to collect her strides, and so she brought herself back onto her haunches, and with one swift, horribly unexpected vertical jump, Grant landed on the floor and looked up to see the gorgeous mare trotting off with her head hooked under, legs thrown out just like her father would…
“Little madam…” He muttered to himself, pulling himself out of the red clay and wandering over to where Lillan stood with her head up, flicking her tail around, sussing him out as he moved closer. “Right, come here.” Grant said gruffly, taking her by the side of the bridle and walking her into the center of the arena. Lillan grunted and squealed, hopping and jogging, looking, not distressed, but uncomfortable and discontent. “Stop it!” He moaned, suddenly feeling so frustrated that his throat was feeling like it had a lump in it and all he wanted to do was go and lie in his bed and be alone…
Lillan jogged on the spot and Grant threw himself into the saddle and pushed her on at a trot, to which Lillan responded by thundering ahead at a pace that made her look more like a pacer than a Dressage horse.

I’ve got a lot of work to do…

She charged up to the end of the arena, swung around 90o and then again, to the next corner, simply showing off how she could move, it seemed, but it was showing how she could move without her rider doing anything at all.
“What are you doing?!” Grant grunted, pulling her up on the long side and getting her to stand still. Lillan gave a disapproving snort and did a tiny little rear, rocking her weight back just enough for Grant to throw his arms around her neck to steady himself.
Viv, his little daemon, as a Peregrine Falcon at that moment, perched on a nearby fence, watching with an intent, but worried expression. She was twitching her wings, eager to fly over to him, but her self-preservation instincts told her to keep well away from that mare until she stopped being such a cow!

So, for the next hour, Lillan and Grant fought their way around the school, the mare getting in a few bucks and rears, Grant getting a few moments of proper riding. Until, as though they both agreed it, both simply gave up.
Lillan stopped herself in the center of the arena and simply looked ahead, her ears lying back a little, showing no emotion whatsoever. Her flanks were heaving a little from the work, but otherwise there was no show of the miniature battle she and her rider had been a part of.
Grant let his feet out of the stirrups and ran a hand up and down her neck, weaving his fingers in and out of her mane.
“Right,” he said aloud, “since we can’t come to an agreement. How about we give a little normal riding a go? No fancy collections… just walking?”
It wasn’t as if Lillan could understand a word of what that tattooed youth was saying, but his body instantly relaxed, as did hers.

He let the reins slip through his fingers, and Lillan shook her dial about as though giving a little thank you and stretched out her neck, then brought it back to her normal standing position. Grant, keeping his feet out of the stirrups, put a little pressure on her flanks, and waited for a few seconds.
Lillan’s ears twitched as she felt the pressure, waiting for the irritated ‘double squeeze’ that Grant was becoming known for, and stood quite still for a solid minute.
“Lillan, walk on, please.” He commanded softly, and she twitched slightly, one forehoof raising half an inch off the ground before placing it back down again. She wasn’t sure about this. “Lillan, please,” he pleaded, having hoped this quite approach to her would make Lillan a little easier to ride.

It took an entire hour for Grant to have Lillan walking, trotting and occasionally cantering on command. She definitely wasn’t sure about this boy, but as time rolled on, her strides became softer, more controlled, and she wasn’t bolting anymore. Circles and lines formed in the clay surface of the arena as they trotted around quietly, not a single buck or rear was seen. Grant put his feet back in the stirrups, and, in one risky act, asked her to collect herself and bring her head back.
Lillan faltered a little in her stride, but ultimately listened to Grant. Her strides, whilst not anywhere near a ‘collected trot’, were smoother, more refined and much more controlled. Her head hooked under a little, the weight of her movements was being pulled back towards her quarters. However, despite this, they both knew there was a long way to go in the weeks they had together. Lillan’s trust of Grant was hanging by a weak thread only formed through stubbornness, but there was potential for the pair. Grant just hoped this good attitude that Lillan had would last for more than five minutes…
