The first couple of weeks had been rough. It was clear to see just how miserable the war vetern was, and just how badly effect by his PTSD he was. At first glance, he truly did not look like his former self, and once he started talking, he only sounded like a shell of the man he used to be. Dark circles under his eyes, constant look of fatigue, always on edge with paranoia and anxiety, and always a sharp tongue. However, after years of rehabilitating horses, Jenny had developed an eye for looking past their rough exterior and seeing the good in them that was just being held back a prisoner. A prisoner of war…trapped inside his own body. Jenny could see it, she knew Tide was still in there somewhere behind all the hate and malice. What he need was a friend.

Her training with Prim was also coming very slowly and glacier speeds. For the past couple of weeks she had been working with the mare, literally from the ground up again to try and build some kind of bond and trust with the beast. She was out in the cross ties while Tide had taken Malibu into the arena to work with her. Curious, she went over to the gate to watch the two.

She remained silent, watching the man interact with his mare, observing and listening to him speak to her. A small frown came to her face, ‘It's kinda sad I can trust a horse more than I can trust people... It's just.. hard to trust people.. when it's the cruelty of another person that made me this way...’ her heart broke hearing him say that, but how true.

He suddenly jumped, noticing that Jenny was standing by the gate, watching him.
"How long have you been standing there?" He breathed.
She was silent at first, looking at him shyly. ".... The whole time...."
"Oh..." Tide frowned, looking at the ground then back up at her. "How much of that did you hear?"
"All of it.." Jenny told him in a quiet voice.
Tide frowned, beginning to walk / limp for the gate. Malibu followed behind him. But when he reached gate, Jenny didn't move. "I need out."
"Tide, do you hate me?" She asked him suddenly.
He paused, his mouth hanging open in surprise. He shifted his weight onto his good leg, thinking. "Jenny, I dislike a lot of things. I like very few things. I hate even less things. No, I do not hate you. I just wish you weren't babysitting me like a child."
"I'm not babysitting you.. I'm just.. watching over you..."
"Yeah, that's what babysitting is." He rolled his eyes, putting a hand on a gate. "Can I come out now?"

She stepped to the side, letting him walk past before turning back around. "Tide."
He turned around, his piercing blue eyes staring into hers. "What?"
"I... I'd like for us to at least be friends.. I mean... I'm going to be here for a while.. So.. it'd be nice..." She twiddled her thumbs nervously.
Tide looked at her for a long time, his gaze softening. "You don't want to be my friend, trust me... I seem to only hurt my friends..." He told her sadly. He turned away from her again, walking back down the barn aisle to the cross-ties.

Jenny remained by the gate, sighing and shaking her head. She was beginning to understand why he refused to place his faith in another human being, but... it made her wonder...Would she ever get through to him?

Finally she forced herself away from the gate and get back to Prim. She brought the mare to the arena and cracked the whip to get her going. “ah ah, out…” clicking her tongue trying to get her out and away from her. “come on now, you know how to do this. GET!” she cracked the whip again and finally the mare did as she was told. “A little stubborn today are we Primavera?” she shook her head. The mare seemed overly cooperative today, doing what was ask of her, until Jenny asked for her to canter. Primrose took advantage while the human girl was distracted in thought and started to running around, bucking and cow kicking like an idiot. “AH AH!! WHOA! That’s enough!” she pulled on the line. “get out!” she boomed as the mare moved I close to try and kick her. Jenny just didn’t have the patience for this today.

She felt eyes on her, getting that creepy feeling that someone was watching her. She turned around see him – Tide – staring at her from the gate. She instantly froze meeting his intense icy stare. ‘How long had he been there!?’ feeling a little bit harder to breath, like the air had gotten thin, she turned her back to him to try and focus on her work again. But still she felt an unsettling feeling of being watched.

Finally after several minutes, she pulled Primrose to the center and looked over her shoulder back at him, “Can I help you?” she asked with a confused look on her face.

He stared at her, silent with that dead look in his eyes. Shifting his weight as he got up off the gate, “no.” he stated

She blinked still looking other confused, her mouth opened to try and say something but he cut her off.

“no one can…” and with that he turned around and limped his way back into the barn.

She stood there with her mouth hanging open in surprise, Prim nudging her in the back, “shhh…” she hushed the mare putting her nose away as she watched the man walk away. “You’re so very…very wrong…” she sighed before leading Prim back into the barn.

I don't say much... don't commant much but I still always enjoy to see your art! It's such an unique and own style. I don't need to look at the name to see that it's yours! I like how you use your colors, how you put the image with stories and I like your humans! Thanks for sharing that to your watchers!

I can see the struggle in the image and liked to read the story
