Description Harriet gave Fancy a good long look from the fence line as the mare lazily grazed her way around the field.
Fancy was on her own that day, and had been for that night as well, and every eye was stuck on that mare, yesterday she had thrown a complete fit in the school and thrown Harriet half way across the course . She had then taken off, leaping over the gate and galloping back to her stable, where she stood, trembling, until Kalib came and calmed her down.
It was a kind of admitting defeat, but Harriet had finally admitted that she would never truly have a bond with that mare – the fiasco yesterday had proven it. The way she turned to comfort from a man who she had hardly seen before made it even more obvious that her respect and compassion was never going to be directed towards her show-jumping rider. It was something she’d feared since she first sat on the mare, since she first felt the uncontrolled power, even though she never did anything out of the ordinary, Fancy never trusted Harriet – and there wasn’t a particular reason either.
“It’s just her problem,”, “don’t blame yourself,”, “some horses are just like that,” were the responses she got to her worries from the rest of the team, and none gave her much comfort – they were all hollow words. The only person she had believed was Kalib Beaumont when he told her, “every horse has it’s rider, I'm Black’s, and... you’re not Fancy’s, and I'm afraid that’s never going to change. You’ve just got to trust her and do your best – even a team made of a horse and a rider who are not compatible can work as long as the rider can show the horse they they’ll be there for them. She won’t ’trust’ you per se, but she’ll do her best. So, do your best, and hope that you’ll come through okay.” He gave her a pat on the shoulder and then walked off... and Harriet Flowers felt butterflies in her stomach. Blushing, she turned away...
Fancy’s acting up has drawn the attention of the whole team and everyone was in the tiers of the indoor that school when Frankie brought Fancy in from the field. She was exactly as she always was, her ears back, relaxed, tail swishing a bit, eyes honest and slightly drooped.
“Adda girl,” Frankie praised, patting her, before he pulled himself up into her saddle.
Fancy’s head shot up as she felt the weight of Frankie and she snorted in anticipation, her ears pricking forward and she paced her hooves a little, eager to go.
Frankie’s gray eyes suddenly lost their kindness as he pushed her forward and he switched right into ‘trainer mode’. He walked Fancy on a loose rein around the arena, not touching her with his legs, but urging her on with the occasional vocal command of ‘walk on.’
Fancy obeyed without any hesitation and he soon has her cantering a 20m circle with one hand holding loose reins and legs about half a foot from her flanks, all the time he narrated to his audience.
“Now, Fancy is one of the best horses to demonstrate liberty dressage, or ‘natural dressage’, if you prefer. She’s not trained in it, but she’s so honest she’ll understand what you want.” He pulled her up with the tiniest movement on her bit and he sat back in his seat. Fancy dropped into a trot instantly and then walked out with extended strides, relaxed. Frankie praised her quietly, and then commanded ‘canter’. Fancy was a little startled by the sudden instruction, but picked herself up into a canter again. This time, Frankie took her towards the jumps, set at about 90cm.
“Three, two, one, up...!” He counted the strides accurately and let Fancy pick her body up effortlessly over the jump.
Frankie repeated this over several of the jumps, right up to one almost 160cm without reins.
“Right, Harriet, your turn.” He dismounted in a fraction of a second and Harriet was on Fancy’s back in another fraction. “Just ride her as normal.”
Harriet almost immediately was tense, and Fancy, too, was suddenly on her hocks, her ears swivelling around.
“She’s sensitive, careful!” Frankie spoke sternly, however, Harriet’s body suddenly went ridged, and Fancy was automatically trotting from the accidental tightness on her flanks.
She trotted and then cantered down the edge of the school, tossing her head and throwing out her legs, taking off for the jump half a foot in front of her and knocking it completely down.
...
The show’s tomorrow...

Ah, Fancy's first competition - it went so much better than we'd been expecting since both she and Harriet were going mental - however, she was an absolute angel on the day. We hope she's placed well in this competition.
