Description After a handful of people asking my advice on how to do an animated lipsync, I decided to make a tutorial based off of what I think is important to consider with lipsync in animation, as well as my methods of tackling the task. This might not be the industry standard method of doing lipsync, but this is what works for me, and this is what I think is important. I hope if anything, it'll help make things a touch easier and understandable for you other ambitious animators out there trying to figure out what makes a good lipsync in animation.

this person i sit next to in my animation class is doing a dialogue assignment, and all hes animatig is the mouth.... i told to but more expression and stuff by using hand movements and stuff, and he actually said ok.... but i guess he was just saying that to get me to stop talking..

Hahaha.. Well, it's a good thing you gave him some advice.. It's always up to him if he wants to take it to heart or not.. But if he's serious about doing some good animation, then eventually he'll learn that you can only cut corners so far.. *l*

I am SUPER HAPPY about the emphasis you've put on body language and observation. Aspiring animators need to know that animation isn't just a soulless, cookie-cutter process - and you've illustrated that here quite nicely. I'm an animation major, and it just makes me all kinds of sad when people resort to consulting charts of drawings with vowels, consonants and the mouth shapes associated with them to do ALL of their work.

Awesome work.

basakward In reply to cockthra [2004-11-18 09:09:22 +0000 UTC]

Yeah.. I kind of feel the same way.. So I tried to make my mouth shapes a bit minimal, trying to give people some room for personal interpretation and exaggeration. ^_^

i think it's no coincidence that i saw this the same day i started re-reading farenheit 451.

one of my fav books... and i felt like animating it.

i'd read it, and storyboards would run thru my brain... and i'd think about which scenes we're most vital... and camera angles, and how i'd animate characters expressions/body language for each dialogue.

trippy.

keep goin, you do a tremendous service to all with ambition.

peace.

basakward In reply to catgir [2004-11-09 16:03:20 +0000 UTC]

Well, keep in mind that standard television resolution is 720x480 at 72dpi. At the studio they scan their stuff in at 144dpi just in case we need to zoom or something..

amen...i'm in a directing class and i can't help but tell them all the time to just go with whatever comes naturally in their body language. i'm the type of person that uses my hands a lot when i talk, so i agree times 10. great work, and i love your demonstration

basakward In reply to turbopat [2004-11-06 22:59:52 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! Everyone uses their hands when they talk, only some more than others.. It's really a WONDERFUL thing to use to emphasize the dialogue.
