Description
Expanding on the concept of "Phrasing" in animating a lipsync, as well as some phoeneme mouth shapes!Again, I emphasize this is all my opinion and how _I_ do my animations, which might not be the industry standard or whatnot.. This is just what works for me.

So I have a question I drew all the different mouth shapes but upon animating them to match a sequence of sounds it looks weird is that because there's no audio behind it?

ahh this is an old pic of yours but still very useful ^^
but i have a question, do you know what the mouth shape for R is? i can never seem to get it right, at least in a cartoony form. for example, when you say "far", what is the mouth shape? thanks ^^

It's close to an "oo" shape, but the mouth is a little wider and I show more of the teeth. Hope that makes sense.

Thank you SO MUCH for this and the other tutorial. I'm just a high school student but I really want practice animation as soon as possible. This is going to be really helpful. :D

thanks...that defenetly makes sense...I asked some of my friends and they said x-sheets also...its gonna be weird getting used to it since its so technical but...I gotta be a good animator...I was thinking of also maybe using flash and importing the sound...fuguring out how many frames the sound would last at 24 frames per second...maybe when I import the sound on flash and c how long it last there it can also give me a good Idea on how long(how many frames) itd problable last. Also it would show me the hight points of the sound...since flash shows a wav.thanks for the links they were a good help.

thanks Bro...this is really helpfull...I wanna ask how you can match the sound and timing when your doing the pencil test and not listening to the sound while its playing...cause in flash its easy...since you hear the sound while your animating that way its easy to get the timing...but when doing a penciltest you cant hear the sound until you get your tape into a computer with that DV machine....please help me obi one kanobi your my only hope

Oh yeah, here's where you can find some blank x-sheet templates just in case you decide to go that route.

Check out the rest of the site too.. It's a real gem.

There's a number of different methods. But the most standard in 2D animation is the use of x-sheets.
Here's a pretty good overview of using x-sheets:
[link]
Since you're familiar with flash, using x-sheets might come a little more easy to you.
But for me personally, I put the sound byte on my computer, and I use an animation software that plays the sound byte along an x-sheet for me (much like flash does) and I time out my dialogue using that.
The software I use is called Quickchecker
[link]
It's expensive, but it does a lot of the dirty work for you so you can focus more on animating. Pretty much all of my pencil tests were exported directly from Quickchecker.
Hope that helps. Good luck with your animation!

nice.... now what would one do for a 'W'?
I'm trying to do this manually, as opposed to using this program I have.

Good idea of leaving some letters from being drawn. I used to draw all letters, which made my characters seem to talk slower than the sound U=best

I looked through both part 1 and 2, and even though I'm already familiar with this principle it's still a useful bit of info to refer to
There was actually one thing I wanted to know on how you execute your animations. Specifically timing and synching with sounds and voices. I have a general idea on that but nothing as thorough.
