Description
Expanding on the concept of "Phrasing" in animating a lipsync, as well as some phoeneme mouth shapes!Again, I emphasize this is all my opinion and how _I_ do my animations, which might not be the industry standard or whatnot.. This is just what works for me.

As an animator, I think I speak for the whole little batch of us when I say:
THANK YOU.
I've been trying to put together a couple of pages of mouths, just for the lip-synchs at the end of my semester project, and it's been hell. Thank you ever so much. You're an inspiration and a life-saver.

I really like this sheet! The first one, too. Lots of helpful tips and such. I would also suggest that it might be helpful to look at some of the older animated disney films. REEEALLY exaggerated expressions and body language, and they have all sorts of lip synching cheats you can pick up on if you watch them slowly that demonstrates what you're talking about
Chances are I'll print this out and keep it in my notebook for later.

Yeah, there's so many different ways to work out lipsyncs.. I really study Don Bluth stuff for lip syncs.. Bluth's work is hands down my favorite stuff when it comes to lipsync.. It's flawless!

Oh my god yes. Like his old skool movies Secret of Nimh and the original All Dogs go to Heaven. It's just beautiful to watch over and over, I don't think he gets enough credit for what he does.

I totally agree.. I have a lot of respect for Bluth.. He's the ultimate trooper.. He makes brilliant animation after animation. He started off making his first ones with Disney's old equipment they weren't using anymore! And with every animation he makes he gets pushed aside by Disney.. But that doesn't stop him. He just keeps making 'em.. I was told he's working on a Dragons Lair movie! I hope the rumors are true!

You HAVE to have respect for a guy who made an animated film in his Garage. You can really tell that he's not in it for fame or money, he keeps going purely for the love of the craft. There's always a lot of heart in his films that shines through if you know how to see it. It's really inspiring :3
I haven't heard any rumours meself, but I do hope we see -something- new from him soon!

Oooh this is quite ingenious. Definetely see the effort behind this. Very professional animator-type shizazz
I particularly like the subtle differences, such as between the 'ah' and 'oh', as well as the 'cuh/guh/kuh' and 'LL'.
Astounding attention to detail.
Immaculate.

Thank you! You really have to find that fine middle ground in animation between attention to dedail and not so much detail to where it's impossible to animate.. I hope this tutorial helps. ^_^

Hehehe.. I dunno about that.. A mirror is your best friend when it comes to animation, as long as you're not afraid to make a fool of yourself in front of it. ^_^

WOW Erin!!
Thanks a LOT!!!!
I have never felt more inspired to do lipsync than now!
I remember at AI, I only had like...3 assignments concerning lip syncing, and the teacher wasnt good at it to boot. So I never quite understood it. Especially the timing thing, which Im still confused about
But this tutorial preety much explains the basics and takes us on the path of self discovery!
Thanks man!

this is useful alright.
but usually my problem in animating with dialogues is timing the body movements according to dialouge.
but i guess i still need to practice more.
but the mouth for 'uh' seems rather odd to me. doesnt sound like it. i guess it still works since uve been using it
very nice of ya to have this up in ur DA
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
basakward In reply to escar [2004-11-06 23:07:22 +0000 UTC]
Well, "uhh" is peculiar because it requires the motion of the mouth closing slightly as it's being said. I more or less drew the mouth's widest point in the "uh" sound in hopes to make it more clear.. But I can see how it can confuse people.. Honestly, the mouth shapes are there to give people a general idea, enough to get them started.. I don't expect anyone using these mouth shapes as the end all be all of lipsync in animation. ^_^

but these r pretty good guidelines for ppl who wishes to start out in lipsync.

You didn't mention it, but that "LL" variant can double as a "TH" mouth-shape
