Description Expanding on the concept of "Phrasing" in animating a lipsync, as well as some phoeneme mouth shapes!

Again, I emphasize this is all my opinion and how _I_ do my animations, which might not be the industry standard or whatnot.. This is just what works for me.

Well animation is a rough business to get into.. You really have to love the work.. But enough people asked me about lipsync that I decided to make a tutorial.. ^_^ If you do decide to get into animation, I'll be more than happy to help you out if you have any questions.

That's really helpful as well. ^^ Your tutorials are all very informative. I'm glad you put them up because now I can have a referance of sorts for developing some of my own ideas. ^^ Great job as usual.

Thank you much! I hope it helps.. That's why I post them.. I don't believe in hoarding the "industry secrets".. The more art out there the better I always say.. So I'll do what I can to hopefully help people achieve the kind of art and animation they're shooting for.

Very. Very. Awesome. I wanted to be an animator for the longest time before I switched to writing, and seeing great tutorials like this makes me want to scrape up what little self-esteem I have in the animating department and give it a shot again.

I'm all for more animators out there. It's fun if it's your thing.. But if you find writing more pleasing to you, then by all means go for it.. But just in case, if you ever post an animation on DA, be sure to link me 'cos I wanna' see.. ^_^

Elephant! I'd never heard that trick about building down before. I've struggled with lipsyncing in the past, so I think this'll be helpful to me on any future endeavors I attempt. Thanks!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

basakward In reply to tsunami-ryuu [2004-11-18 06:15:41 +0000 UTC]

Cool! I hope it does help! The trick is to empasize the accents, and kinda' just mush together the words the voice actor mushes together.. ^_- So in short, let your EARS do the thinking, not your HEAD. ^_^

Morpheus306 [2004-11-07 08:22:55 +0000 UTC]

Hey man cool mouth shapes, except for the "elephant" phrase, you wouldn't have that last mouth shape for the "t". the NNT would be the same shape. I'm sure you know this but in animation dialoge you don't animate every letter, just the key ones. Your second example works a little better, but that last mouth shape is a little awkward. I would use the "NN" mouth shape you used in the first example as the "NT" mouth shape to end the phrase. Oh, and who sticks their tongue out when making the "LL" sound? It just looks awkward, good drawings though no doubt about that.

basakward In reply to Morpheus306 [2004-11-07 19:20:55 +0000 UTC]

Umm.. Did you read the tutorial? I was trying to make a point to NOT do the first example.. I don't know about you, but when I over enunciate the word "elephant" I make that shape with my lips when I get to the "t" noise at the end.. *shruggs* But we're all different.

And with the tongue sticking out on the "LL" sound, like it says on the tutorial.. It's a stylistic variant.. A lot of Aardman animations use that phoeneme for their "LL" sounds.. Actually, I should have used that phoeneme for the "th" sound.. But oh well..

evilord187 [2004-11-07 02:15:45 +0000 UTC]

Great job, well done! Helps me a lot since my whole studying of animation right now is of lip sync. I learned a new thing today: The shortening of the words from like elephant to elphant you know. Yeah. Thanks!

basakward In reply to evilord187 [2004-11-08 20:21:45 +0000 UTC]

Hehehe.. I think phrasing is definately the key to getting the timing right with lipsyncs.

lip syncing as funny one ay so many different opinions on how it should be done, you pretty much nailed it on the head though, if find it to be a case of opening and closing the mouth and hitting mouthshpes like P and O acouple of frames prior. Nice to see another 10 second cluber(I see you created a winner). I've got afue animations on DA myself [link] i would appreciate your imput.
