Description
Expanding on the concept of "Phrasing" in animating a lipsync, as well as some phoeneme mouth shapes!Again, I emphasize this is all my opinion and how _I_ do my animations, which might not be the industry standard or whatnot.. This is just what works for me.

Good call! I didn't even HAVE a "th" phoeneme in there, did I?

This is great stuff erin. I actually WAS trying to draw each mouth shape of each syllable (do'h!) so this should come in handy. Any advice on how or what program to use to break down an actual audio track and put it on an X-sheet?

Yeah, dude! It's a sweet shareware program called MAGPIE .. I think it's on my faq..

I know there's a link to Magpie on there.. It's a really helpful program for making xsheets for lipsync.

Hehehe.. Well, I love to teach when I get the chance to.. And I'm all for helping others get started on their own animations.. The more the better I always say.

Great job. I've been doing lip synching for ages and I've never really had a problem. I was working on a 3D film with a friend, I did the blendshapes and facial animation and he was asking how I knew what to do for the sounds. I personally just say the word and hold the shapes, and I have a handy mirror to look back in. This is great resource still, something I'll definatly print out and stick on the wall I think. And I must forward it on to my co-partner in art crime, I'm sure he'll find it really useful (especially as a 2D animator). I think alot of people will find this useful so it's a +fav!

Well a mirror is probably one of the essential tools for an animator. I definately hop over to the closest mirror when I'm not sure how something looks and I just act it out myself. ^_^
Thanks for sharing my tutorial with folks! As long as it's helpful! ^_^

Well that's the thing though.. It doesn't.. I mean, if we said "Elefant" the way it SHOULD be said, we would say "Eh-Leh-Fahnt" but we're lazy and normally blend the word into one syllable "Elfn" ^_^

Excellent tutorial, but there's one thing I think is worth bringing to your attention (I've only done a handful of lipsyncs... in fact I only started a couple weeks ago so I've done very little but here goes)
for the "Sh" part, it doesn't look as natural as what I think it could be... Maybe making the mouth stick out to the side a little more ( you know how you have cartoons whistling and their mouth jumps or stretches out to the side of the head, like that but not so severe, since I can see you try to keep a more 'stable' form on your character) and make the upper and lower jaw connect (so there is no gap in the teeth). Unfortunatly it was Ed Edd and Eddy which triggered me to say this, when Ed says "shush" or really just "shhhh" and that's the way it looked. Of course when you compare yours and their styles, I can easily say that in this case I could be wrong.

P.S. I faved both of the tutorials, thanks for the great help.

Yeah, the "sh" mouthshape does look a touch wrong.. I was trying to go for a more mild form of each phoeneme in hopes to allow the people using this tutorial to do their own forms of exaggeration and whatnot, that's why it's a bit of a mild "sh"..

Ahh I see, so you're giving us a basic shape, which is plyable to our styles Nicely thought out there.

Yeah, just a little something to base your animation off of, and then let you go hogwild with your own personal touch. ^_-

Ahh, I still think i have to find my own style, really, i have my own style pictured in my head (when i get an idea for a cartoon) but i'm still trying to successfully put it onto paper.

Singing and acting both fall under the same category - performance.. So yes, I know if you observe singing that will definately help. ^_^

Oh man, that Richard Williams book can be intimidating with its size, but it is a seriously quick and easy read.. And it's just brilliant how it gives you just enough information to UNDERSTAND but little enough detail to allow you to do your OWN version. Richard Williams is a genius!
