would you mind me asking where you source your furs?

This fur was from Spotlight! I'm not sure if they're only in Australia though- this fur is quite dense and a medium pile if that's any help

This makes handpaws look so easy to make! I had no idea it could be so simple I might just have to try this now!
Btw, how would you go about doing this if you wanted to include claws? Just for reference

Glad it can be helpful!
I've made paws with claws before, and many people have different methods of attaching the claws. The way I've done it is when you sculpt or cast the claw, attach an eyelet or some kind of loop to the back by pushing it into the claw at the centreback. That eyelet can then be sewn into the paw via a hole in the fingertip

Thank you! I luckily had a thread in a brown thread (it's even a very similar shade of brown), but to be honest, for the smaller pads on the fingers a lot of glue was involved ^^'

would I use this pattern for a pair of gryphon paws?
π: 0 β©: 1
basenjiboy In reply to Skyedancer [2016-04-21 22:40:17 +0000 UTC]
Yeah I don't see why it wouldn't work, just substitute fur for fleece or pleather and point the tips if you're making claws. If you use fleece however it might need to be reinforced from the inside so it keeps its shape!

Thanks! Yeah I have attached claws to this suit:Β Semi-Commission For Furnace-The-Dragon Β but I think I need to find a better way to do it next time as they aren't as sturdy as I would have liked.

How movable are these? Like, can you pick up stuff or is it a hassle?
π: 0 β©: 1
basenjiboy In reply to LolitaCynder [2015-09-25 06:44:56 +0000 UTC]
They are quite dextrous yes! But since there are two fingers joined together it is a bit of a hassle, they're pretty good however since there is no foam or anything involved.

This looks real helpful! I'll use it when I make handpaws.
But I'm trying to make a two coloured handpaw, so I use two fur colours for this..? That's the only difference, right?
Oh dear, sewing. I've sewn once so i'll get my mom to help with that. There's a fabric that's usua;;y on computer bags, I forget the name of it, do you suggest using that? I don't have much black fabric so, eheheh.
So many questions, I promise this is my last one.
Could you use a sewing machine? It might be harder but it might have better stitches then my awful hands??
Thanks .^.

Thankyou! I'm glad to know its useful for you!
If you mean 2 colours as in with markings on them, when you have your pattern all ready, draw across where you want the colours to touch, and cut across the line you just drew. (make sure you label the parts you cut off so you don't get them mixed up!)
When you trace the pattern pieces onto the fur, just leave a little seam allowance across the edge that you cut (where the colours meet). You can also airbrush but that doesn't give such a solid colour.
Hope that makes sense.
For fabric, it really depends on what you want and what character you are creating, it's entirely up to you! If I'm thinking of the same fabric you are, it's the synthetic, somewhat stiff canvas-like material. I don't see why it wouldn't work, but make sure to leave a little more seam allowance if you think the fabric will fray easily, and remember to use thread that is the same colour as your fabric, because it's not fluffy, you will probably be able to see the stitches, so it's best if they blend in to the fabric colour!
Depending on the quality/thickness of your fabric/fur, you could use a sewing machine. I hand sewed these paws as the fur is very thick and my sewing machine can't handle it. Just be sure to take extra care at the point where you turn around at the base of each finger as sometimes the fabric can bunch up.
Hope those tips are helpful! Feel free to ask any other questions or clarify anything, I'm super happy to help!!

Oh my gosh thank you!!!
Once I get the fur and things I'm sure to use this tutorial! I'll send you a link of them when I'm done.
I'm making a partial fursuit (well, a half partial; Head, handpaws and tail) And i'm getting the foam today OOO
Well, i'm suppose to.
The underside is gonna be white, and the top is going to be creamy brown colour.
So it'll be the same as normal paws where you just stitch the two sides together?
I'm making the cat in my profile picture, it won't look exactly the same, but similar.
Yaay
(aha sorry for how messy my words are today, I got back from a busy day yesterday of planes and airports.)

I'm wondering, can't you just buy a pair of cheap, tight fitting, fabric gloves, shape the fingers into a 'paw' shape with foam, and then covering that with fur as you do with the head? Won't that be much easier?
π: 0 β©: 1
basenjiboy In reply to Asrath [2015-05-01 06:42:31 +0000 UTC]
Yes that is another method for making handpaws, but for those, you would need to make a duct tape pattern as you would for a head, so you end up having to sew together many more pieces with darts in the fabric than is necessary for these.
π: 0 β©: 1
Asrath In reply to basenjiboy [2015-05-02 09:09:31 +0000 UTC]
Ahh yes, okay! Thank you.
Would the appearance also differ depending on the method used? Which method would yield the best looking handpaws?
π: 0 β©: 1
basenjiboy In reply to Asrath [2015-05-31 10:42:56 +0000 UTC]
If placed correctly, realistic paws can be given 'knuckles' for a more feral-paw style.
I'm thinking it would really depend on what look you're going for.
Depending on what shape is made with foam (if there is any) realistic or toony paws can be made.
Generally, slim-fitting handpaws tend to be a more realistic option, and more rounded or padded paws give a more toony look.

I am sorry for the late reply, but have Β been very busy with school. But this is something I am going to keep in mind as I want to create my own fursuit. The only problem is, I am tall and still growing (1.8 meters now ) and when I reach 20 years old possibly when I stop growing taller, then I might create it. Its just that if I make them now, I will just grow out of it too quickly and it would be a waste. But I do thank you for the reply as I am sure it would come handy in the future.
Thank you once again ^^
