Description
The ILAV-AT provides the Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion with precise, long range, heavy anti-tank and anti-fortification fires through the use of the TOW anti-tank missile and its numerous variants. The ILAV-AT is derived from the M1134 Double-V Hull ATGM carrier, modified with changes applied to the ILAV-30 variant including reinforced hatch seals and snorkel provisions.
The primary role of the ILAV-AT is to destroy enemy armor assets with long-range anti-armor missiles. It can also be used to breach and destroy enemy buildings and fortifications. To do this, the vehicle is armed with a two-round missile launcher capable of firing any missiles in the BGM-71 TOW family from TOW-2 onwards. The ILAV-AT is usually armed with TOW-NLOS-A missiles to engage armor and TOW-NLOS-B for the engagement of fortifications.
The ILAV-AT features an M240 7.62mm machine gun on a pintle mount as its secondary armament to engage infantry out to 900 meters.
TOW-NLOS rectifies the greatest failing of the BGM-71 TOW, using components derived from the BGM-176 Griffin to provide the missile with fire and forget capability to a range of 8,000 meters, more than twice the range of the previous TOW-2A and TOW-2B used by the LAV-AT. The incorporation of the Griffin's seeker technology allows the ILAV-AT to also engage targets in defilade. TOW-NLOS-A features a tandem top-attack explosively formed penetrator to enable the destruction of armored threats, while TOW-NLOS-B utilizes a penetrating blast fragmentation warhead for anti-structure use.
The vehicle pictured, nicknamed "TOOOOORGUE", as a reference to the game Borderlands 2, served in the weapons platoon of D Company, 2nd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, in Khalidistan in 2052.
