UPDATE: I've realized that this'll help more people if I place it under Tutorials, so there.**********************************************
A lot of aspiring comic artists seem to focus only on style, and not much on storytelling and characterization. Being a comic book artist not only requires the ablilty to draw, but also, the ability to tell a story. And to be able to tell a story visually, you have to be able to give life to the characters- make them look more animated and energized on the page.
One way to do it is through exaggeration. You can give life and energy to the most simplest and boringest situations, and you can apply this to any style. See above and compare the actions on the left with those on the right. I think you'll agree that it's really not that difficult. And I'm not exaggerating!
This was actually part of my lecture during last week's seminar, but I don't think the audience was able to see these clearly so I'm posting it here for your convenience. ^__^ Hope this helps folks!

Not sure if someone already told you this, but the ribbon tied on cloud's bicep in the first picture ((Which is amazing of what you did to make it pop)) is from a video game. It was symbolizing AVALANCHE, a rebel group organized to oppose the workings of the Shinra Electric Power Company. Just thought to let you know. And sorry if someone already said this and it's repeating information.

They only started wearing the ribbon in Advent Children to symbolize their loss of Aerith. The ribbon wasn't there before! And it's pink(reddish pink) like the ribbon Aerith wore in her hair.

Well thanks for that. there could be many different reasons for them wearing the ribbon. Be it for the rebellion or for Aerith. I think they're both right and go hand in hand in some sort of way.
((Dude, I wrote that comment so long ago! I totally forgot about it. Ha ))

Haha, now I see that too. It because this tutorial got a DD so I found your comment on the first when I checked it - and I believed it was from today But well, however, at least we both noticed it was probably Cloud and Sephiroth
And both outfits are pretty unusual...

This is really helpful for me, especially since I noted I keep drawing the same poses.
I love the second one best. Probably because I seem to get like that at least once a week. XD (My skirt is thankfully longer)

I have been looking for this, so called "Exaggeration" for quite sometimes, because I'm practising my manga drawing recently, and found that there is something missing in my piece. The elements that to show the movement of a character,so I thought it would be something called "movement style" or something realted to "move", I guess thats why I couldn't find what I want .
Thanks for you tutorial, it shows me the idea of how to improve the story of a picture. And thanks again, finally I learned the word "Exaggeration"

batangbatugan In reply to Quentina-Psychi [2009-09-28 14:46:43 +0000 UTC]
I think what you you were describing is dynamics- to show a sense of movement Well, exaggerating the action is one way to make the action dynamic, so I'm glad I was able to help^^

Quentina-Psychi In reply to batangbatugan [2009-10-04 14:13:49 +0000 UTC]
LOL,yes, you got me again, the dynamics
so, besides exaggeration, there is something else to make the action dynamic???
I have a little try few days ago, but still fail to show the action dynamic of my character seems like I still need to practise a lot before I really can tell a story by just a drawing

batangbatugan In reply to Quentina-Psychi [2009-10-05 07:42:54 +0000 UTC]
Well, there're other techniquers like adding effects such as adding invisible wind and making the clothes and hair look alive, speed "blur", and impact effects. Maybe I'll do that in my next tutoria, if I only have enough time to actually do it

I did a painting with a little action,it does look like an action(at least you could tell from the picture what the action is about),but still missing something
anyway, hope to see your nex tutorial uploade ~

Perhaps you mean that it still looks stiff. You can try twisting the torso and see if that works^^

Quentina-Psychi In reply to batangbatugan [2009-11-02 16:12:38 +0000 UTC]
mmm, LOL
yes, you are right, my drawing seems pretty stiff...maybe thats why it looks not so natural........
and about the "twisting the torso"..I think I finally understand how to twist charater's torso (just the hip part )..I will keep trying ~~
thanks for your reply~~

This is a brilliant resource! I agree - many artists don't think enough about really dynamic poses and exaggeration.

batangbatugan In reply to azmoonchick [2009-04-30 17:11:51 +0000 UTC]
Thanks! But like I said this is only one way to do it Some stories and characters don't require exaggeration but a more subdued approach, for example^^
