uhmmmm don't make fun of me k? But 1: do screen tones work on regular sketch paper(I'm only 14 so I can't get a part-time job and i don't hav an allowance either). 2: How the heck do i get screen tones thats not expensive as hell (akadot.com: 3-5$ for one page is VERY expensive not including shipping fees). 3: how do I apply screen tones? Without making it look out of place and sticking out/awkward?

This helped me a lot--not to say I can draw any better. Someone maybe be able to format comics, but not draw them.
Ah cruelity...
I really need to find inking pens with wells and nibs--I just can't get use to Micron and I want to have a varity... Any clue as to where I could find those old fashioned pens?

This was overall very nice. But you are pro a few things I disslike quite a bit. Mainly the lazying out on backgrounds and shading on people.
Now ill be the first to admit i have not drawn many comic pages in my life. But i know what i like to see.

This is an excellent tutorial, it is truly is a manga tutorial, I like how you look into other aspects such as contrast and perspective, you make them seem relatively easy in a way (even though for one, they are quite hard.....well in my case they are ^^' Anyway this is indeed a great help to me, kudos on making it, instant fave

i have to this is a really good tutorial. you must've studied a lot of comic pages from different manga to get this idea. and I have to say, you did a really good job on it too.
I really love the detail you put in the words, along side with the different colors to distinguish the point of your idea. i just can't help myself but to fave this. its really useful!
thank you very much for making this! //_^

When I came by this tutorial of yours, I couldn't help but fav it.
Normally I'm into seeing how the works of a single manga page are made.
Since alot of people seem to think that its very simple to work with them, when it really is alot of hard work to be put into it.
Thanks for providing such an interesting tutorial. =]

thank you !
drawing pages is really quite a complicated thing, haha... ^^
i also know people who believe all you need to know is just how to draw. but there's so much more to it; layout, pacing, paneling, composition, contrasts and not to mention storytelling, character and background designs, etc, etc.

Rave779 In reply to AliTheBandit [2007-12-25 19:30:35 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, people clearly overlook all the aspects you've just laid out.
There's alot of hard work put into them, and I should know. I've tried drawing a manga page, and not once have I been able to make one.
Its alot of time consuming patience and skill to conjure up one single page.

Although I didn't learned much (except in the digital phase!), I find this very comprehensive and superbly made: good advices all long, covering most aspects of manga making, going well into details with good examples well highlighted.
You are a very good teacher!

i'm happy to hear that, but i'm a bit depressed (naw, not really) that i still wasn't able to publish a manga yet, haha .
so this is my last tut for now, i'm going to focus my all on improving again !

Sure, it isn't easy, I saw =Zorgia knocking at many doors, and finishing to go the self-publishing way.
That's why I left an eyebrow when you mentioned the publisher preferences on format, since most of us have no publisher, yet have to do comics!
But using formats seen in real publications can help, anyway.

AliTheBandit In reply to philho [2007-12-25 18:28:02 +0000 UTC]
yep, i think it's better to get used to drawing the pages with a print-optimized-format, especially for people who actually plan to print their work someday with print-on-demand.
...or just want to be ready when they in fact get published by a company .

Yes, anyway, respecting margins is useful even for simple scanning or photocopying.

good insights (in another installment of funkcrusader's "what the hell is"... what the hell is a radiograph?!) youve totally got the theory of sequential art down pat.
randomness 1): i rememeber you recommended king of thorn to me a while ago, and it only recently came out here in the us, did they get it before us in deutschland? (also, fucking kickass title, thanks for the rec)
2): blame! 10 just came out here.. GOD what an amazing series, talk about taking comics to the pinacle... agree diasagree?
anyhoo ive had one too many beers
PEACE!

philho answered the rapidograph question ^^ ; they're basically like fineliners, but better quality and (much) more expensive.
i'm not sure when king of thorns came out here, but it must have been quite a while since the 6th book is out already.
and the last blame! book was published here about 2 years ago i believe XD . and i agree, blame! is different from any manga i ever read, totally unique. tsutomu nihei is the h.r. giger of japan !

philho In reply to FunkCrusader [2007-12-22 09:14:49 +0000 UTC]
I believe I can answer the question about Rapidographs: I think this name is a commercial one, about drawing instruments I use to call tubular pens (but I don't know if that's the right English name) or technical pens.
They are kind of fountain pens, but able to deliver a line of constant width (normalized, you have a pen per width). The have ink tanks like fountain pens, and the tip is a tube with a fine wire inside, letting the ink flowing around and delivered on demand.
They were used mostly for technical drawings (before wide usage of computer...), but some comic book artists (European at least) used them, although exclusive usage of them is often seen as too... mechanical, the lines being too regular, without variation of width.
I used them a lot for lettering, doing fine details or some textures (dot clouds, some cross hatching, etc.) and to draw thick panel borders.
Alas they clog easily, mine were left unused for years and are dry... Nowadays, permanent felt tip pens like Fineliners are more used, I think.
Now, I don't know what is a G-pen.
Personally, I use mostly brushes for inking, anyway.
