Description

Once more I got up and did a birthday photo for William Hartnell, the "original you might say". This year I actually wasn't feeling too inspired...perhaps its down to the fact that Hartnell's Doctor wasn't the most action oriented like his successors , so I went through a Google search looking for images that could either light the flame of an idea or something. Curiously, I found a neat one from the An Adventure in Space and Time, the biopic about Doctor Who's first years on the air that starred David Bradley portraying Hartnell portraying the First Doctor that was on a 1960s era BBC set. That seemed to do it pretty good for me and I played around with the idea a little more until I came to a somewhat satisfying photo for the day (think of it, with the Dalek being worked on there in the background, as something that could be between The Dalek Invasion of Earth or The Chase).

My favorite Hartnell episode is "Time Meddler". And my favorite 1st Doctor moment is in "Three Doctors" when he does epic burns on 2 and 3 Doctors, LOL.

Even if he had to read those lines off cue cards he still hadn't lost any of his charm as the Doctor lol.

Hard to say what my favorite moment from Hartnell is as there are so many (between what's still surviving in terms of episodes and what doesn't thanks to the survival of audio) but I think my favorite episodes tend to The Aztecs (where I really think Hartnell came to truly understand the character of the Doctor) and audio-wise The Smugglers (it's a romp, a fun one with Hartnell in good health it sounds like), while I believe The Dalek Invasion of Earth might be my all-time favorite Dalek adventure from his era.

Actually, 3 actors have played the first doctor. Hartnell was first of course, then, when they filmed "The Five Doctors",Richard Hurndall played him, then David Bradley came in. He's the only version of the Doctor to have been played by more than one actor.

Four actors too if you count the child actor in the little flashbacks to Gallifrey during Capaldi’s run.Β

I did not see those. While I have seen at least one episode of every Doctor, I missed that one.

Indeed! Out of all the Doctors, him and Colin Baker took me the longest to come round to enjoying. It wasn't until I finally sat down and paid attention to what a friend of mine termed were some key Hartnell's to enjoy (An Unearthly Child, The Daleks, The Edge of Destruction, The Rescue, and The Chase) that I became wooed by his portrayal and his era.
