Description
Here's the first junk cast of the elf head I'm working on for myself. The next thing I need to do is clean him up and figure out how his eye wells are going to need to be situated!
Original was 3d printed from one of my zbrush sculpts

Lovely elf head! *O* Do you plan to make preorders once it's finished?

I might do some artist casts, although the match between color and resin won't be exact.Β But unless there's a lot of interest I won't be able to afford to do a procast of him. :S

Wow--he's got such distinctive features and has real personality. I have the distinct impression he's hyper intelligent, witty, and slightly sarcastic but that's just me
Your sculpting is just incredible.

He is looking good!
I'm in an intro to CAD class right now, and will get to use the 3d printers, which I am very excited about. We're using CATIA, which is more for mechanical parts types of things, but it's still 3d modelling which I have not done before and always wanted to do!

Sweet!Β I haven't used CAD before, but I've heard that 3d Studio Max has similar elements.Β

Looks great. Β I wish I could afford your doll work. Β My budget just won't allow it. Β Beautiful but expensive.

Thank you~ <3 <3 I had to take up a side business of making doll clothes to afford to buy the dolls when I first got into them, otherwise I couldn't have afforded them either. ._.;Β Β I wish I could say that i make a living now off selling them, but they're damn expensive to produce. :/ Β Most of the money goes right back into making them!

He's beautiful even for a junk cast. I adore the detail of his ears. His facial profile is just lovely, I love his brow and nose shape a lot. I can't wait to see him finished. How do you like using the 3D printing as a cast mold instead of a hand sculpt?

I like both... and they both have their usefulness.Β The printer I have right now isn't right for really fine details, so I still have to do that by hand.
I just wish it took less sanding.

Well at least they both have their uses right, well having a base to start with to add details to sounds like it can be helpful at times. It is very interesting to see the 3D print vs a hand sculpt. Does the 3D printing cut out any less time? The 3D printing contain a lot of rough texture?
Have you ever thought of selling heads like this? If you ever do can you let me know? ... I'd have to save for another body...but that's okay

Right now there's not enough interest in the dolls for me to do that.Β I might offer some artist cast heads but they won't match exactly. :/

Awww! He's finally shiny! Are you liking the 3D print better as a starting point? Seems like it was more work this way.

It's the same amount of work as paper clay.Β It's really hard to get paper clay to keep really sharp, machined looking edges for where head caps and such connect.Β So I have to do a junk cast for those as well.Β I do a junk cast for pretty much everything. :SΒ The only thing I DON'T like about the 3d clean up is the sanding.Β It's tough on my hands.Β But the computer is still faster to create a sculpt and I seem to be able to achieve finer details.Β If I was wearing magnifying glasses when I sculpt traditionally i'd probably be able to get the greater level of detail.
But with 3d I can also take bigger chances.Β I can save a file, then experiment with another file to see if I want to change things.Β I could even print both versions.Β It took me five prints to get this head right.Β It kept looking weird when I printed it... I finally figured out that his chin was too wide at one point.Β If I'd made that adjustment in traditional medium it would have taken me a lot longer to realize what was off and I might have further destroyed the work as I altered things and looked for the answer.

Can't wait to see him finished! Are you planning on offering him for sale? I'm sure you're flooded with requests.
I forgot that you do the 3D modeling for a living, so of course you're super fast at it, and it's preferable in many ways! Heck, you don't even have to "proof" the design to get a rough idea of it! The possible-fubar aspect of traditional sculpting terrifies me until I get a junk cast out of it. Then it works in an edit, trash, repeat until I get what I want pattern. I can be rougher with the junk cast, anyway. And those are only useful if they come out right. So far, I've only got a few junk casts lying around. I can't imagine the pile you have after completing so many dolls!
I'm moving my workshop into an actual storefront studio very soon by starting my own business. My main moneymaking service will be tattooing and piercing, but in my downtime, I'll have studio space for the dolls and for my novels (neither of which will bring much money, but I like to keep busy! ). Maybe now I'll get some work done!Β

I've had a few people ask about him, but not enough interest to produce a set yet.Β I have to do fairly large orders at my current casting place, which kind of sucks. :/
Congrats on getting a studio! Man, i envy you!Β I'd love to have a real studio.Β Right now I work in our spare bedroom, but i have to be really careful not to disturb the neighbors and stuff.Β

Thanks. I wouldn't be able to get a studio just for my dolls or other art in this area. The only way I can do it is through tattooing and piercing. Most people in this area need art that has a "practical application" before they consider it feasible. And tattooing is one of the few arts that took hold here!
