Description
This is a cover I designed for the members’ magazine of the museum I work at, the Burpee Museum. The concept I wanted to convey here was that all extant plant and animal lived concurrently with most popular Ice Age forms (mammoth, sabertooth, sloth, cave lion, etc.). My executive director liked the concept and so we settled on a Smilodon fatalis attacking a flock of tom turkeys, a scene that could’ve happened in the Midwestern United States at the time.
Also, yes, wild turkeys can and are that big compare to a sabertooth. We have several taxidermy turkeys, lions, and a sabertooth mount I was able directly reference from for size and wild turkeys are common enough where I live that I and many others where I live are able to watch them fly into trees to roost overnight.
