Description
A while ago, a woman looked over my shoulder while I was drawing and asked if my style was inspired by Sonic the Hedgehog...I didn't quite understand where she got that, as my style is actually inspired by a combination of Walt Kelly, Friz Freling, and Jim Davis, with a bit of a Chuck Jones touch on the expressions(At least, I TRY for that... I've always admired C.Jones's expressions.)
But, after drawing that fleet-footed hero of the downtrodden: Speedy Gonzales in my style, I kind of get where she was going.
Anyway, Speedy is... Kinda my favorite Looney Tunes character(Closely followed by Pepe Le Pew) and in fact, the only chasee I like(as apposed to chaser... Like Wile E Coyote, Sylvester, Pepe, and all the other guys chasing somebody.)which is sad, because I hardly ever see fanart of him... I mean- look at him. His accent is cooler then Bug's, he has more personality then the Road Runner(Who was always just a prop in my opinion.), AND from the way things look, he gets more girls then Pepe Le Pew("Speedy Gonzales is friends with my sister." "Speedy Gonzales is friends with EVERYBODY'S sister.").
Speedy was created by Robert McKimson, improved by Friz Freling, and, sadly, ruined by Daffy Duck.(I HATE the eposodes when he's against Daffy. Sylvester makes sense, but a duck chasing a mouse?)

I love Speedy Gonzales! I like the cartoons with Speedy and Silvester in it.
Though I hate the cartoons with Speedy and Daffy in it. That pair didn't worked as WB has planned back in the 60's.
Then again, awesome work on him with your style. He looks so adorable. ^.^

My thoughts exactly. Speedy with Sylvester made sense; the common theme of cat vs. mouse. Not only that, but Sylvester was always guarding something. It was Robin Hood, which is, at it's heart, what Speedy Gonzales was all about.
Daffy? I really don't know why anyone even THOUGHT of pairing him up with Speedy. Even Yosamite Sam made more sense(There was a single Speedy cartoon where Sam was the villian). Not only that, but most of the cartoons just had Daffy doing nothing and getting annoyed by Speedy for no reason... This is the fastest mouse in all Mexico, not Woody Woodpecker.

Yeah, with Daffy as a predator, every thing about Speedy and Daffy cartoons will fail, especially the infamous, "See Ya Later, Gladiator". X___X Watching that cartoon makes me want to puke. I'd swear.
Anyways, AMEN TO THAT!

Fantastic job with the little fella, man. Love the poses and expressions here, you've really put your own stamp on him while still keeping him distinctive.
Oh yeah, damn the bloody political correctness. Speedy is legend.

Heh, these are great. I actually can see traces of the influences you mentioned, so you must be doing something very, very right.
Funnily enough, my favorite character is Daffy. Personally, I try to forget that those shorts ever happened. I may be biased, but I blame laziness/cost cuts instead of Daf. Those shorts nearly destroyed him too.
If only Speedy could be revived! I always loved his little battle cry before he went speeding off.

I love Daffy too. All those shorts pairing Daffy up with Speedy did was anger the fan of BOTH in me...

I love Speedy! And I have to agree that the Daffy/Speedy cartoons sucked. To me, they were worse on Daffy's character than they were on Speedy's. Speedy was still just as lovable as ever, he just had the wrong rival. Daffy, however... well, he no longer lived up to his name at that point. He used to actually be daffy, with the "HOO HOO!" and all. At that point, he had just become an evil, selfish, greedy, uncaring, manipulative sociopath. And yeah, a duck chasing a mouse doesn't make much sense. It's best to forget those cartoons ever happened. Speedy's rivaly is Sylvester, ALWAYS. (And I always preferred Speedy over Tweety. Speedy's way funnier and more lovable.)

I love Speedy too. And y'all make some good points here. I will say that my own sister-in-law is Mexican and she and her family love Speedy! He may have a stereotyped accent, but so does Pepe, so does Foghorn, so does Bugs, so does Sam. And anyway, he's always the hero of the cartoon, so there.

Yep... And those that DON'T have accents have lisps. So there.
Personally, I like those old cartoon characters with funny accents and lisps. They still make them, even with political correctness for one reason: THEY ARE FUNNY!!!
Not to say that those without them aren't funny, but we still got lots of new guys with them... and nobody complains...

Excellent points made - not enough Speedy stuff - does it have anything to do with him being banned in the US some years ago? (FOr STUPID reasons from what I remember). But sad. I love his accent too!
Ah, Chuck - who among us DOESN'T try to embody some of his spirit in our work?
This is beautiful, though. I adore his expressions - he looks like he's had a make-over! Keep up the great work!

I read that it was because Warner Brothers didn't want to offend anybody...
Even though nobody said that they were offended in the FIRST place... I mean, as far as cartoon stereotypes go, Speedy's pretty cool. He's a good guy you genuenly root for(I always wanted to see Tweety get eaten... Not the same with Speedy... If HE lost, I'd actually feel pretty bad, cause that means whatever group of pauper mice he's helping have lost too. In practically all the good non-Daffy stuff he's in, he's always trying to help the less superpowered.)

Yeah, Tweety was always one of my LEAST fave Looney Tunes. And I agree about Speedy being a sort of political hero among mice. About the whole offending thing - that's REALLY stupid - but wasn't it cuz Speedy supposedly painted a bad picture of Mexicans? Which is dumb b/c polls showed that Mexicans LOVED him - or so I remember.
Too bad they don't showcase him very much anymore. Although he had a good cameo in Back in Action. Poor Speedy. *sniff* and thanx for the reply!

Tweety is the only chasee I hate, and Speedy is the only chasee I love(Was planning on drawing a pic based on this opinion... Lets just say it's rather gruesome for Tweety lovers...).
The rest of them (Jerry, Roadrunner, Crazy legs, the ant from the ant and the arrdvark, etc.), I don't mind them, but at the same time I wouldn't care if they were caught.
And Speedy wasn't a bad picture of Mexicans, in my opinion, any more then Superman was a bad picture of American values. True, his first cartoon had him so offensivly steryotyped as to be butt ugly, and he was a thief, but after Friz fixed him, he was pretty positive. Kind of a rodent Robin Hood combined with the Flash. I personally am not Mexican, despite much confusion with my skin color (I'm African American/ German, and both have their OWN share of problems in old cartoons...) but I grew up cheering for Speedy and ACTUALLY BOOING SYLVESTER... I LOVE SYLVESTER AND THERE I WAS ACTUALLY BOOING HIM!!! Forgive me, Sly... I still wish that one day you dine on annoying bird, but may Speedy keep on exploading out of your tail...
And as for the cameo. It was my favorite part of the movie... but Speedy didn't get any complaints, so why is HE having problems as opposed to say, Pepe LePew- HE'S just as much a steryotype, AND he's a pretty bad example for the kids on how to treat women when you think about it (No means chase me and try to get me to say Yes?) yet WB didn't have ANY problems with HIM?!? And they get rid of Speedy?!?
Like I said in the description, Speedy may have had his share of ladies, but they ALL consented. He didn't have to chase a single one of them... unless that turns them on and they specifically asked for it...

And are you forgetting about Elmer "guns are harmless" Fudd? How is that any worse than Pepe?

battybuddy In reply to Yalay [2008-02-12 00:46:02 +0000 UTC]
Actually, Elmer's thing isn't about guns being harmless. In fact, they ARE dangerous in cartoons, just that the danger isn't permanent. Daffy's gotten his head blown clean off more then on one seperate occations. Fudd's deal is with his lisp.

BigPigPeaches: "This reminded me of a story...when I was an undergraduate at University of Texas, an editor at the school newspaper (female) ran a piece about how Pepe Le Pew cartoons promoted sexual harassment because he continued to make unwanted sexual advances towards the cat. The letters page of the paper was filled for the next 7 days with some of the most vindictive invective (I just made that phrase up, just now) you've ever read, from pretty much everybody at the school. I sent in a letter asking for a date, because I love bitches."

Haha - you're so right. Good point about Pepe. One would think that with all the anti-French crap going on that Pepe WOULD be frowned upon - in this day and age - at least in the States. I'm always amazed by how POPULAR le skunk IS. And you'd think the French wouldn't like us for making him up, like you said.
what a coinicidence - I wouldnt mind seeing Tweety get eaten either. Maybe you should draw that!! hehe. But as for the other "chasees," they are more loveable. Particularly Roadrunner. He may lack a personality but he's adorable. At least i think so.
I wouldn't say Speedy was a bad pic of Mexicans at all. I wonder how that whole thing got started? But considering the era - 50's - when viewed today, it doesn't surprise me that so many ppl are eager to ban things. Everything has to be so "politically correct" these days...
"He didn't have to chase a single one of them... unless that turns them on and they specifically asked for it..." LOL. He was a rather desirable mouse in the toon world. Certainly beats out Mickey in my book.
Glad to see you're such a diehard. You've really done your homework in this area. And I think you should draw more of Speedy.
