Description I finished reading Gregor the Overlander by Suzanne Collins the other day. It was pretty good. I decided I wanted to try my hand at some fan art. Sort of. I actually imagine Luxa to be much more pale than this--with almost translucent skin. Okay. so now that I read the character description... she pretty much looks nothing like this... oops. oh well. she looks pretty anyway... xD

"Hands down, she was the strangest-looking person Gregor had ever seen. [yeah, I didn't make her "strange-looking" at all...] Her skin was so pale, he could see every vein in her body. [I was gonna try to color veins on her, but it didn't look right.]"

"At first he thought her hair was gray like his grandma's, but that wasn't right. It was really more of a silver color, like blonde hair with a metallic tint. The hair was woven in an intricate braid down her back ans was tucked into a belt at her waist. A thin band of gold encircled the girl's head."

M'kay. so I pretty much completely disregarded the character description all together. I forgot the braid... and that it was tucked into her belt... eh. She took her hair out of it for me to draw her. yeah. that's it. xD

Edit: okay. I just went back to photoshop and desaturated the heck out of her skin and hair. She was still too blonde and rosy before. I think that's a bit closer to the description. Isn't fan art fun? ^__^

Oh. And it also says that she's got purple eyes. I tried to be subtile with her eye color only because I'm not a big fan of obnoxiously bright unnatural eye color.

enjoy! ^__^

P.S. I might decide to try to re-draw her again later on. You know, with the braid and veins and stuff...

Yes, actually. I had noted that in the description that I had forgotten that bit... oops. ^__^; oh wells. Yeah. Her hair is technically supposed to be either braided or chopped. So yeah... I kinda dropped the ball on that one... T.T I think I'll eventually redraw her at some point with either braid or short hair.

thanks for the comment and the s! ^__^

I agree. I also like the design on her shirt. Textures are almost way too easy to use. It feels like cheating. xD

Awww, too bad. You really should draw some more of them. Luxa looks great. A little Gregor maybe... Ares... Henry... Did I say Ares?

Actually, you might be in luck with the whole "my drawing other characters"... I'm in the process of finishing a Gregor drawing. I'm feeling a little funky about the background, but I'll probably post it pretty soon--within the next few days, most likely. And just tonight I finished and scanned a sketch of Boots. Almost all the flat color is laid in for that one, but it still needs shading and such.

Thanks for taking an interest in my work! ^__^ It's certainly been an encouragement, and has aided in pushing me to do more Underland Chronicles work. It's been a fun bit of character design for me.

Thanks. ^__^ I really enjoy doing visual interpretations of characters that you don't really see a ton of images of. And it's always great to have feedback like this--where someone else has that exact same "look" in mind when reading a character. I feel like it lets me know that I accomplished what I set out to express in a character design drawing.

So thanks. I appreciate it! and thanks for the !

Why is this not in my deviantwatch gallery? Why is this not in the Gregor the Overlander Group? Oh, it's because you are a n00b to the series, it sounds like? But you are not a noob at fanart! The background is a good choice of color, her choice of clothes is brilliantly conceived, and her hands are actually the proper size. People fail to realize just how big and long human hands are in relation to the head.

bdevries In reply to D-Iverson1990 [2010-06-02 18:30:53 +0000 UTC]

Yes. I am a "n00b" to the Gregor series. Just finished the first book... last week, was it? I think that was it. Yeah, it was pretty good. ^__^

Yes. hands. usually should measure from hairline to chin in relation to the head. Good eye! And thanks for your wonderful comment--the attention to clothing choice and even background color (I tend to favor neutral mid-range tones with a slight bit of color--darker than the lightest tone, and lighter than the darkest tone to make the lights and darks of the drawing itself pop. I'm such a color nerd. ^__^ Not many people seem to notice these kinds of very deliberate decisions. Thanks! Glad you liked it.

And I'll maybe see what I can do about getting it into the Gregor the Overlander Group... got a link? ^__^

Maybe you should really avoid groups because of spoiler art.
the four other books in the series, in order, are
Prophecy of Bane,2004
Curse of the Warmbloods,2005
Marks of Secret,2006
Code of Claw,2007
I hope you can find a library or something. Is there anything that you have to do with your life that uses up precious time that could be used to read the other books instead, stuff that I could do for you?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

bdevries In reply to D-Iverson1990 [2010-06-09 05:49:14 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, that was where I found the first book, actually--the library. ^__^ It was recommended to me by the very enthusiastic youth librarian after I told her I was searching for good fantasy/sci-fi adventure novels for my 12 and 13-year-old cousins. Gregor was the first book of the 7-or-so books she had pulled from the shelves that I actually started reading. As a character, I liked Gregor, and found him to be very believable. He seems to be very earnestly written.

Another of the books the librarian had me pick up was the first of the Redwall books by Brian Jacques. I'm working on that one now, and am finding it to be very delightful. I've heard that they were really good, and I've always wanted to read them, but had never made the time to do it.

But on my next trip to the library I'll probably pick up the next Underland Chronicles book.

As far as "anything you can do for me"--I guess you could finish reading Psalms through Revelation in the Bible? ^__^; I'm trying to finish reading through the entire Bible by the end of this year. I mean, I've been a Christian for all 25 1/2 years of my life and still haven't managed to read through the entire Bible yet... You would think that would have been a priority, huh? So I'm still working on that too...

BTW, thanks for the GregorTheOverlander group invite. ^__^

I think I did it once over the course of two months in 2009 or something.
Sure, I could do that again, although accursed society is making me do grating college research assignments instead, because studying the scribblings of wretched, ancient illiterate madmen who lived in caves is a bourgeois waste of time, time that I owe to society and must use strictly for the worker's cause of the republic. This month we set out to produce more tonnes of bar soap for the people than any other district in the Republic! I must do my part, and limit my leisure, (reading, TV, card games) to about 30 minutes a day, spending most of it with my large family. Spiritualism is a capitalist, individual-minded sour joke.

I'll just go research that Foxconn manufacturing firm now. That's for Intro to Business. I'll be done by Sunday at midnight to submit it online. But I don't think I can do reading for you... it doesn't work that way...
