Description
This is over a year old, but it was brought to my attention that I should upload it. Taken in my parents alternate dining room/family room with their camera in a suit I got from a thrift store. I had no socks or shoes that went with the suit, so I went barefoot. Look how huge that foot is! I get a lot of Harold (from "Harold and Maude") comparisons when people see this picture.Related content

Tell me Harold, what do you do for fun? What activity gives you a different sense of enjoyment from the others? What do you find fulfilling? What gives you that... special satisfaction?
Sorry, I am a Harold and Maude fanatic, awesome photo, ultra cool

Since it's a picture of me, does that make me awesome?
I'm kidding - you don't have to answer that.
I already know I am.

Ha! You do remind me of Harold.
I like your willingness to say fuck it! to wearing shoes if you don't have any that match. Interesting picture.
Also, your parents have a very nice dining/family room.

Thank you very much!!
It's part of my artistic work ethic: If it doesn't work, get rid of it. The work may be weaker because it's missing something, but at least it's not ridiculous because it includes something stupid.
Otherwise I'd be wearing checkered vans in this picture, with black socks, which would RIP RIGHT THROUGH the color scheme and even the feel of the picture.
(My parents were middle/lower-middle class while I was little, then they divorced, and they both moved up into upper middle-class territory by the time I was a teenager and were more than happy to adopt all the nasty aesthetics involved - including fancy dining rooms that no one ever uses. Capitalism holds promise of a future because...?)

I wasn't really paying attention.

Absolutely not! In fact, the Beatles are above my doorway - they watch over me as I pass through it to go on with my day.
I also talk to cars.
(I actually really love the Beatles - favorite band since I was 9)

...
My English teacher once said that the Beatles are overrated. I dished him all the indignation a 13 year old can muster in the last period on a Friday.
I talk to cars myself, my friends and I name them.
(The Beatles will never die)

13 albums in 7 years is so incredibly prolific and they were so immensely popular and experimental at such an explosive time that the only logical result is that their influence would be felt decades later.
That's not being over-rated, that's just statistics and sociology.
If you look at it in the perspective of the BREVITY of the history of recorded popular music - we're BARELY getting into a 100 years now and the Beatles were only 40 years ago, there has ABSOLUTELY never been anything like them before or [yet] since. Strictly from a business standpoint, the marketing of the Beatles created the current model of the music market (which is now failing in the wake of the technological revolution).
When recorded music is into its 500th year and album art is beamed into your cornea and there's been a band BIGGER than the Beatles, then we can start having conversations about the Beatles being over rated. But while they've been, statistically, its most popular and, artistically, most cited band for almost HALF A CENTURY out of only a century of [recorded] background to base it on, the Beatles deserve their praise.
I know I'm preaching to the converted, but now you can reel a bunch of this shit off at your English teacher. If he seems unreceptive, throw in the fact that Paul McCartney is probably the worst lyricist per dollar he's made. An English teacher should respect that.

FlurryofDancinFlamez In reply to Beaple [2009-08-20 10:46:16 +0000 UTC]
You're so right! Nobody can argue with statistics.
I was really surprised by the man, The Beatles certainly seem the type of icon he'd appreciate.
Considering that they did everything you just noted, plus they invented a lot of that technical stuff that's used in basically ALL music recordings now. I've been to The Beatles Story in Liverpool. I know these things.
He redeemed himself ever so slightly when he handed me his copy of Abbey Road and said; "Maxwell's Silver Hammer. Really rate it."
He's such a dick.

Beaple In reply to FlurryofDancinFlamez [2009-08-21 01:51:31 +0000 UTC]
You CAN argue with statistics, they just tend to argue back.
Their contributions to music are just so far beyond JUST the music, that from a technical stand point you HAVE to acknowledge their influence. They were an INTENSELY studio-oriented band and pushed the idea of "production" through the roof.
Abbey Road is probably one of the BEST sounding, least boundary pushing Beatles albums out there. The White Album is really where it all pinnacled (IMO). They wrote the ultimate psych-pop record (Pepper), fucked up their business (MMT), and then crammed 5 years worth of studio knowledge and musical experimentation, drug use and inner-band turmoil into a double album of...basically every musical genre existing at the time, while opening the doors for a few new ones (including Metal and Reggae).
See, people want to try to look at EVERY Beatles song and say "Well, what's so great about THIS one?" And it's not necessarily EACH song, it's their whole body of work - their work ethic, their creative processes, their studio experimentation. They managed to remain market friendly while maintaining an experimental edge. What MASSIVELY popular experimental pop bands are out there now? The Beatles managed to reach a point where they had the attention of enough people to say "Music is going this way" and the people followed.
So how do I rate "Maxwell's Silver Hammer"? The Beatles can play a damn good pop song. NOW - let's look at "Her Majesty" - the first "hidden" track on an album. See - they were always doing SOMETHING.

well, contrasting socks would have been cool.. say a paisley or plaid pattern. Something that would completely stand out against the rest of the picture. But I like this the way it is, although I agree with you that the foot seems gynormous because of the photo angle and position.
