Description
Part of me admires other artists who continually produce work that is so solid and cohesive. I feel like I'm all over the place these days. I love artists like Paul Pope, Adam Hughes, James Jean, Travis Charest, Willie Real, Tommy Lee Edwards, Shaun Tan... I could go on. They all have similarities in that they produce illustrations with figures and storytelling involved, but that's where it ends. There are so many possibilities in making an illustration, design, or story... it's so hard to pick just one. There is a benefit in producing a body of work that has a specific style. It's great for promoting yourself as an illustrator, but I feel it can be very limiting. Such is the challenge of making a living at art. I admire guys like Moebius aka Jean Giraud aka GIR who manage to create alias' for different styles. It's something to consider.
I always wonder looking at artists who have an established style if they ever want to just break all the rules they made for themselves. It might be a confidence thing too (like that they have confidence in what they do, no need to try on other shoes). I dunno, I suppose this is all a natural progression of learning about our own innate styles.
I try not to think too much about style, but I can't help it. It's right there. Almost as if you have a set of paths before you and you have to choose which style path you want to travel down. I don't know if I'll ever have a set style, but then again, could that be my style? haha... yeah.
I know this is all just a process. Every one is at different points in their evolution.
This is pencil, colored in PS... and yes, I know that the tubes on his neck don't make sense.

wonderful shadow on this picture, i like it's ominous presence. detailing is great XDD
I know what you mean by the limitation of an artist by one style; i lost count of how many times i have changed mine//tried new ones. I guess i need an alias or two lol. An artists true style is the one that is the most enjoyable for the artist.. what really sucks is that thats not always what the public eye wants the most. ><

agreed. but as long as you're happy then you'll be making something with heart and people respond to that no matter what style, i think.

indeed, that is true. At least you know your doing something right if you get a response, good or bad. If it really hits someone than you've got it nailed.

I'm pretty sure the artists you mentioned have plenty of scraps and thumbs and dead ends.
Everyone does.
I do agree with you about the whole "style" thing. For a while I was wondering what MY style was. I guess it comes to you, or maybe it's something else.
I need to practice robots.

i defintely think style is one of those things that just comes. lots of trying new things and just seeing what comes out of it.
