Description I've been working on a submission to ONI Press. I looked at Alex Toth as an example for working with black and white. I like the roughness but also his amazing quality. I can't compare, but it was a great influence.

Love the high contrast black and white, ive been experimenting with it myself. Looking at the shopping carts reminded me of Frank miller's style, very nice!

i keep not deleting this from my devwatch box... because i keep coming back to it to look at it... i LOVE what you did with the black and white medium here... the lights and the shadows and the textures are just PERFECT... wow.

i've been speechless every time i've seen this piece ever since you posted it (which must have been at least like 10 times)... which is probably why i havent commented before today

Thank you very much! I really think this makes me want to do this type of shadow and light imagery with the rest of my work. I really hope I can use this technique a lot, but of course only when the story calls for it. Because with the harsh lighting it really sets a very specific type of mood. It wouldn't work for a more light hearted scene.

It makes me happy to make something that you like so much. I hope I can do it again!

yeah, i agree, it's not a technique that can be used in every panel, but you do do it very well

i'm very much looking forward to more work from you

looks great man, hey, I want to commission a tat from you, gimme a call or something and we'll figure it all out, I'm looking for a quarter sleeve wrist to elbow. I know ur not generally a tat artist, but I've always wanted a piece of ur artwork. I would love to get something in the style of what you have right here, no shading, just black and white..

possibly, I wrecked my car last month and I'm now dependant on the bus to get around, i might have to take a raincheck ... sorry dude, keep your eye on insideoutboi.com ... my buiddy at work and i are starting an online comic called "Inside Out Boi: The Life and Times of Earl and Brian". it's a black/white comic about a couple of caffeine loving game testers. I've been doing the roughs for it and getting great response from people i show it to, I'll put stuff up as soon as we've got something worthy of uploading. later man.

Wow, my friend. Just wow. You absolutely nailed this one! So graphic. You should do a lot more stuff with this style. It has a postapocalytic, sun bleached kindof feeling

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

bearmantooth In reply to kidoho [2006-10-18 17:51:43 +0000 UTC]

Thanks Josh, I think I'm gonna explore this style more. I think as far as comics go as a penciller I'd have a lot more control over the scene's lighting, instead of leaving it up to a colorist. but yeah, it really lends itself more to darker stories in tone. wouldn't work for the Care Bears.

This is seriously badass. It's got a cleaner Becky Cloonan look going on in places, but it's still Mike Bear. It reminds me of that great scene in Watchmen.

If they pass on you for this, there's no hope for anyone in comics.
