Behold Mimikyu, the first Pokémon whose final draft for the concept art was submitted on a napkinOK, before I get into detail, lets establish some things shall we. There have been a lot of Pokémon that are ridiculously easy to draw even since generation 1 such as Voltorb, also there have been a lot of goofy looking Pokémon even since generation 1 like Mr. Mime. I love generation 1 since I grew up with it but I am willing to admit Pokémon has always had some dumb character design. I will defend that Voltorb was based on the ‘Mimic’ from classic RPGs, the monster that disguises itself as over world items and considering that is genre the series is I see it as a fun little nod. As for Mr. Mime…actually no, screw Mr. Mime, he just looks stupid.
Also Game Freak has always been obsessed with creating a new ‘Pikachu’ with each generation, we have had: Baby Pikachu, Twin Pikachu, Squirrel Pikachu and Flying Mouse Pikachu. So them doing yet another look-alike to their mascot is to be expected at this point.
But even considering all of that….just wow, what the hell is this thing?
I can really imagine that the designers were having trouble creating 100 or so new monsters for the new games and made this one in a rush, I mean just look at this, the face looks like it was drawn in marker, probably by Jigglypuff (lol Pokénerdy reference).
Remember back when Ice Cream Pokémon was the dumbest new idea they had? Well congratulations you have topped that, hell Sonichu looks better than this…yesh I can’t believe I said those words.
Also look and behold it’s forme changing…it pulls its dress up slightly…hey, remember back when forme changing meant that devil dragons entered jet fighter mode or Hedgehogs became Reindeer? Well now this newest one looks exactly the same.
My point is I don’t think the designers spent very long designing this character in this billion dollar franchise.
So for those who actually like Mimikyu, allow me to give you these following words; that’s okay, you are entitled to your opinion and you are allowed to like whatever you want, don’t let anyone else tell you otherwise.
I don’t hate this thing I simply do not reward laziness, so I felt this all had to be said.
Also became I’m sure I’ll be asked, no I have not played the new games yet, nowadays I buy video games when I find a good deal, usually preowned and currently the preowned new Pokémon games are more expensive than the full priced one (yes seriously). I will play them one day but not presently.

Actually, it purposely dresses like Pikachu in order to make friends because it's lonely and Pikachu is popular.

i actually created the idea of it purposely wanting to copy pikachu as a joke, i assumed that it was just it was an animal that happens to looked similar like with the other brightly coloured cheek rodents the series has
the fact me joking wasn't far off the real reason and that this wild animal and its entire species cares what humans think of it...well...in layman’s terms i feel very sad knowing this

But, Mimikyu is actually a PARODY of the whole Pikaclone trend, and it looking horrible is part of the joke... in a way it's much more imaginative than all the electric rodents of which there always needs to be at least one per generation and which are always shit (Pachirisu, Emolga, Dedenne, Togedemaru)

ok, lets say for the moment this is parody, that this is 'an ironically badly drawn Pokémon made to parody the popularity of pikachu', well my problem with that is it's still a badly drawn Pokémon that was made because of pikachu's popularity
being a parody doesn't automatically make something good or immune to criticism, Disaster Movie is a prime example of that, a parody still needs to be creative and funny and this is neither to me
also whether this is imaginative or not is completely subjective, honestly I think the electric squirrel and the other pikaclones have much more effort and invagination put into them than this notebook doodle

You could say the design is lazy but there's actually a cute backstory and some personality to Mimikyu.
Plus unlike the vast majority of the pikaclones it's actually not shit in combat. So points for that.

if I sound like I'm overreacting in the description it's mostly due to it being my first reagion to seeing this thing, now it's dyed down I don't really care anymore, this was mainly an excuse to draw Pokemon fanart :3

Actually I do like Pichu and the other Pika-clones, I just mentioned them merely because I was predicting mass butthurt so I prepared to counter the two obvious arguments of ‘well Pokémon has copied the Pikachu deign hundreds of times’ as well as ‘there have been stupid looking Pokémon since generation 1’
Pichu was cool in Super Smash Bros Melee, Plusle and Minuim are adorable to me no matter what any fans say, Pachirisu has this really funny scene in its first appearance of the anime which will make me smile every time I see it and the flying mouse…ummm…well it was owned by an attractive supermodel gym leader, anything that brings her to mind is good in my book :3
As I said if you like this little guy/girl then that’s fine, like I said in our other conversation liking Pokémon boils down to coolness, cuteness or having it or your team (or in Raichu’s case, all 3) rather than anything complex so we all see them differently thus there are no wrongs answers in this case
Plus that’s a pretty cool reason, I can just imagine it as an eldritch abomination. A monstrous creature of darkness hiding its true intentions under a guise of cuteness to lure in its unsuspecting prey, I’ll bide its time waiting for the right time to strike, seeing how large a gathering it can create. Then when the time its right then its true intentions will be known to all, by then its victims will think of fleeing only to realise they can’t, then they shall think to warn others of this beast only to realise that is also fruitless before finally knowing it is far too late, all these emotions swarm simultaneously in an instant before the deed is done and the unholy thing will search for its next victims. It could be me, it could be your or it could even be this Pikachu in the picture. Perhaps the Pikachu when the time comes the Pikachu will regret its attitude to this being, perhaps it would have wished to be nicer, perhaps it will see this as punishment from god or perhaps his mind won’t move quickly enough for any a thought to even occur.
…Pretty cool in seen in that light.

the Pikachu clone in this game is a hedgehog called Togedemaru. a pika-clone must be electric type and have cheek pouches.

Mimikyu can't be seen by others and needs to cover itself. it saw the popularity of Pickachu and fashioned its rag to look like him.
it's cute, easy to draw and hits many (including myself) right in the feels. it's also a fun to use and is great for the game and meta game beating out pickachu in stats and typing.
not a rant, just clearing things up.

Okay there is so much I could comment on, however as you were just clearing things and I don’t want to come off like I made this picture just to insult at Mimikyu fans, because in all honestly I just did it to share a laugh with people (as I said Pokémon have looked silly from the start) I will only tackle the ones that sound flat out defensive since I already said I respect any fans of Mimikyu
Well except for one thing since I really can’t leave this unsaid, are you seriously telling me that this thing was intentionally making itself look like Pikachu? I was honestly joking when I wrote that, I thought it was a coincidence like Plusle or Minuim and I was correct? Oh lord it’s like a six year old wrote that -_-

OK first of all pointing out its ‘easy to draw’ undermines everything I just wrote, my point was it was badly drawn so telling me the exact opposite as a positive doesn’t really do anything. Now I do know the benefits of easy to draw Pokémon, when I was a kid I loved to draw Voltorbs and Magnamites, I could create these well-known characters with ease and sometimes that’s all I wanted, sure I could spend ages trying to get the detailed ones done right and risk ending up messing it up but there such simple joys in a design I know I could do hundreds of times and never do it wrong, just a ball with a line and some eyes and I could smile and say “look I drew Voltorb.” Hell even as an adult it can be nice to draw something simple and fun when there’s so many drawings I’m unhappy with.
Also telling me that Mimikyu is a Pokémon that ‘gets people in the feels’…so your telling me it has fans, once again I just said I respect fans of Mimikyu so I don’t know why you needed to clear that up. People are allowed to like it as much as I’m allowed to find a trash bag Pokémon cute, or I’m allowed to think a lump of sludge Pokémon is cool, or I’m allowed to adore a Pokémon that in essence is just the alphabet with eyeballs, or frankly I’m allowed to like Pokémon in general. I mean let’s face it, with so many Pokémon created over so many years not everyone is going to think the same on them all, we are all going to rate them differently from favourite to least favourite and so long as I can pick my favourites I’m not going to look down on anyone else for picking their favourites differently.

However…someone has told me that yes that is in fact the case…and thing is I came up with the idea that this thing is intentionally copying Pikachu…as a joke
I honestly thought the in-universe explanation would be that it looked the same by coincidence, like how Plusle and Minuim look like Pikachu by sheer coincidence…but no it really is a Pikachu cosplayer

my favourite example is on My Immortal, considering all the nonsense that story has its doubly amusing when something is true to life by coincidence, in such a case the story opens up with it 'raining and snowing outside', and dumb as this sounds it is a real thing, it’s called 'sleet' XD

pikachu's design is dumb anyway, game freak's just trying to cash in on the minion craze by having a small yellow mascot and they don't even bother trying to hide it.

Actually Pikachu (and by extension Pokémon) predates Minions (and by extension Despicable Me) by at least over a decade
This is like trying to say that Felix the Cat copied Sonic the Hedgehog’s design
