So one thing that’s quiet big in the Undertale fandom is AUs. Short for Alternate Universe, AUs takes a series and alters its setting and/or characters to reimagine it so it’s different but still familiar. I have seen them in other Fandoms before but usually it’s just one person’s idea and doesn’t get a large following in itself, with Undertale AUs seem to be a large part of the fandom where some AUs are made of a collaboration of people’s ideas and some get tons of fanarts and comics as well. Heck not only is there a wiki for collecting information on a lot of them but I also found another Undertale Amibo dedicated to collecting only AU Undertale fanart and RPs.
I mean dam I’ve never seen something like this to reach this scale. I’m honestly curious to if there was anything in particular that made the idea take off with Undertale above any other fandom I’ve seen. Is it because of the game’s branching paths? Is it cuz of Sans mentioning various timelines in his battle? Is it cuz if the theory Alphys had which Mettaton brought up while humiliating her? If anyone knows why I’d love to hear.
Personally the idea reminds me a lot of something Marvel and DC do, Marvel’s ‘What If’ series and DC’s miniseries or one-shots branded with the ‘Elseworlds’ logo. Both basically explore superhero stories that can’t be told ordinarily because of continuity, usually stuff that can be described with the question ‘what if’ like: ‘What if Spiderman joined the Fantastic Four’ or ‘What if Batman was a vampire’. Some can reimagine origin stories thus changing a superhero as a whole like ‘What if Superman landed in Russia instead of America’ or ‘What if Peter Parker wasn’t bitten by that radioactive spider’…or some can be really silly like ‘What if the Fantasic Four were Bananas’.
Actually come to think of it, both the above mentioned comics and Undertale AUs have the same thing going for them when it comes to the word ‘quality’, some can be well written and tell interesting stories and/or create interesting new takes on characters, others can be interesting, charming, really funny or just crap not worthy of attention.

So anyway, here’s a collection of AUs based on everyone’s favourite evil flower from an independently made steam game…no not Cagney dammit, I mean Flowey. I don’t necessarily love all the AUs I picked, I mostly meant with visual appeal…but I do love the majority of them.
So going clockwise from the top we have:

UnderSwap – An AU where everyone has switched personalities and roles (Flowey has swapped with Temmie)

UnderFresh – An AU based on 90s and 00s culture

FreakTale – An AU where everyone has been turned into freakish mutations after a virus attacked the game file

UnderFell – An AU where everybody is a darker character…EXCEPT Flowey who is your ally

Regular Undertale

StoryShift – An Au where everyone’s personalities and roles have been shuffled around like crazy (Flowey is now possessed by Napstablook instead of Asriel, he goes by ‘Boogie’, Asriel is now playing Papyrus’ role and Napstablook’s role is played by a bedsheet-wearing Alphys)

HardTale – An AU where the entire game is set on Hard Mode.

HorrorTale – An AU where the underground society collapsed after Toriel’s rule and now the monsters are more savage

And in the Centre, UndyneTale – An AU where everyone looks and acts like Undyne
