Description [link] (A li'l appropriate background music via Youtube.)

"Although conscious of their impending doom, at this point, both combatants feel they have nothing left to lose...
After years of exchanging insults and vows of personal destruction, all is said and done...
The only recourse left is..." (Cue fight starting.)
~Narration excerpt from "Endgame"

For those that don't "get it," this is a reference to the famous & controversial "Endgame" story arc in issue #50 of the "Sonic the Hedgehog" comic book series by Archie Comics.
(I'm a fan of that series, regardless of it ups & downs, so spare me the fanboy-ish "bashing" please.) It's now available in the "Sonic Archives: Vol. 13" book.

Even though this is a comic book parody/homage, I actually wanted this to look pretty "serious," and darker then most stuff I've drawn. (Sense I mostly do funny/goofy/random stuff, I thought I'd try something different.)

While Mario's not really known for being "dark & serious," and being light-hearted and comical, if you look at some of the games they do have their darker and serious moments to. (Look at "Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door," or the Super Mario Galaxy games for instance.)
The series always knows how to balance the dark with the light, without being to gritty, or to cutesy/happy.

I also used Bowser's "King Koopa" design from the old Super Mario cartoons by DiC, and the old short-lived Valiant "Nintendo Comics System" comics. I felt that fit, sense during the earlier days of the Sonic comic (including "Endgame") they used the DiC Sonic cartoon design of Robotnik, so it just seemed appropriate.
Plus, I feel King Bowser Koopa's cartoon design isn't quite as beloved as the Americanized "Julian Ivo Robotnik" design, (when it comes to fanart) and needs more love. I always liked that design, and personality for Bowser so I tried to make him look accurate, but also a li'l more "threatening" here so I added more spikes to his shell, and perhaps a li'l to much detail on the hand.
As for Mario I tried to make him look more like how Yoichi Kotabe draws him. (That's the guy who illistrates the original NES Mario games for Nintendo.)
In the original drawing I accidently gave Mario 5 knuckles, (something I oddly didn't notice after inking this) so I had to erase one digitally in MSPaint to make it look right.

Regardless of some of the flaws of this piece, (I didn't make the background energy circle big enough for one thing.) I'm actually quite pleased with how it turned out, and it looks like one of my best "Mario" fanart pieces I've put up on DA.
(Wich is great, 'cause I don't consider myself a "good artist" in any way. lol)

BTW that's not "lava" that's purple energy swirling around them.

I don't know, it's very disappointing, considering I liked some of Penders' work. Oh well...

Oh yeah, I read some of Penders' plans he said he had for them, and I have to say... I much prefer Ian's stories.
I'm glad they put Ian on board when they did, I feel he made the comic more appealing again. (I have to admit, I didn't care for Penders' later stuff much. No offense to him.)

Ian's by far my favorite writer for the official Sonic comic... (Regardless of all the rumors, slander, and downright lies that his "haters" are spreading all over DA about him recently...)

Mario: If I'm goin' down, I'm takin' you with me, Koopa!
King Koopa: I don't think so, you pesky plumber!!

Nice job, dude! And, they say that Sonic's been ripping off Mario lately. Bah!

The awesomeness shown in this image is incredible itself; knowing the history, however, and the comic from which this was inspired only adds to that!

^_^

Superb, my friend, just superb; keep up the great work!

Thanks! I really like this one, so I'm glad to hear others like it to.

I always see the campier cartoon version of Bowser/King Koopa bashed alot by Mario fans. Personally I loved his sarcastic, wise-cracking, yet-evil/dangerous personality. (Heck he even tried to actually KILL Mario & friends before in the "SMB Super Show" several times!)
So I wanted to show his "darker/eviler" side here to make him look more "cool," and "badass." King Koopa needs more love.

Even in the games Bowser's personality ranges from "goofy tyrant brute," (like in the Paper Mario, or RPG games) to downright "monsterous" like in the "Super Mario Galaxy" games, where he's a more darker (yet still at times comical) villain.

E-122-Psi In reply to Beau-Skunk [2013-09-21 18:12:46 +0000 UTC]

I liked Koopa's personality too, I like how they try to make Bowser more a snarky 'card carrying villain' in most of his speaking roles, making him akin to the cartoon version. It's actually kinda spooky how the DiC Mario and Sonic cartoons had similar depictions of certain characters, especially the villains.

I take it this was before Robo-Koopa turned up and remodeled himself into Bowser form.

Beau-Skunk In reply to E-122-Psi [2013-09-22 01:33:37 +0000 UTC]

Hehe... There actually was an episode of the SMBSS called "Robo Koopa." (A slight Robo-Cop parody, I assume.)
And yeah, I liked King Koopa's design, and personality in the show.

Yeah, I think my favorite one was "Count Koopula," or the Greaser/motorcycle one from the Elvis-parody episode. (Though, the character Elvin Parsley's voice sounded more like James Brown, then Elvis oddly. lol)

Did you know that Robotnik is not the only one that said PINGAS? King Koopa (Bowser) said PINGAS before Robotnik did. In the first episode of AOSMB3, he said "Medium sized PINGAS". I dont know what he was trying to say, but hey, PINGAS

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Beau-Skunk In reply to Vierzbanator [2011-09-20 23:16:59 +0000 UTC]

I've seen the first episode, (have the DVD boxset) and he doesn't actually say that.
I'm pretty sure what you saw was a spliced/edited Youtube parody.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Vierzbanator In reply to Beau-Skunk [2011-09-21 00:17:10 +0000 UTC]

No, it was not a youtube poop. It was the original, unedited, episode. He means to say "Medium sized minions" but it accidentaly comes out to say "Medium sized pingas". Its harder to catch than the Robotnik pingas (wich was also a technical error) but listen closley and youll hear it. Im not the only one who noticed.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Beau-Skunk In reply to Vierzbanator [2011-09-21 08:16:04 +0000 UTC]

I dunno, it doesn't sound like Koopa's saying "ping-as" to me. I just don't hear it personally.

Also, it wasn't a "technical error." You apparently don't know the orgin of "pingas."
Robotnik saying "pingas," was actually him saying "Snooping as usual, I see?" but fans edited out most of the entire sentence leaving only "ping as."
Thus it became a popular internet joke/meme.

Beau-Skunk In reply to spaceman022 [2011-09-20 20:12:21 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, it wasn't as bad as some Sonic fans said it was.
The longer "director's cut" version (now included in Sonic Archives #13) was better though.
(Aside from the "fish lips Robotnik" [link] cover art.)

The parody fanfic/fancomic "Endlame" was pretty funny though.
"This mask makes everyone look like Dennis Rodman!"

It's not really "an ending" considering the officially-licensed "Sonic the Hedgehog" comic is still going on to this day.
I know the reference is kinda obscure for some who're not familier with the comic, but I figured other people, and Mario-fans should be able to enjoy this pic regardless hopefully.

Also thanks, man. I appreciate the compliment.

Really nice and angry-looking! Mario looks like he's going to punch him right in the nose! Maybe he already HAS! Your work always has a great solidity and clearness to it, especially in this piece, balancing all those strands of energy without making it appear too cluttered! Not an easy task!

Oh, and that music fits this beautifully

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Beau-Skunk In reply to ShoJoJim [2011-08-22 05:27:37 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! Also glad somebody liked my musical choice. (Hehe)
Your compliments really mean alot to me, dude.

Even though this is a mild-parody of the long-lasting "Sonic the Hedgehog" comic, (I figured it'd be a good homage to) I also wanted this to look like a really serious & intense battle between Super Mario & King Koopa.

I also wanted to leave it a bit vague what is happening, so even Mario fans unfamilier with the Sonic comic series, can enjoy it, as well. Perhaps even come up with their own ideas of what is going on.

What is happening to them? What WILL happen to them? Who will win? Are they both doomed? Will this really be the final battle?
