This comic reminded of "The Great Imposter."
Long story short he impersonated a doctor and when into the army has him. 16 people got injured and he had to preform the surgery. Not knowing anything about medicine spent a few hours reading medical books. Afterwards he preformed the surgery and all 16 lived. They made a movie about him in the 1960s.

Twilight is book smart, not street smart. Sunset on the other hand struck me as much more street smart and more of a schemer. Magic studies wise, well we really don't know what Celestia taught her in comparison to Twilight. And I bet she showed things to Sunset she never showed to Twilight.

There's also the fact that Rainbow Rocks implied Twilight as a mentor of sorts for Sunset. In order to be helping Sunset, Twilight couldn't know less than her.

Mentor on friendship, not magic. We don't know what Sunset learned in comparison to Twilight or even what age she left. Twilight never heard of Sunset it seems so we can believe Sunset is somewhat older. Maybe around Shining Armors age and went missing just before Twilight got her Cutie Mark.

I would think the opposite is more likely. Twilight never showed the arrogant and disloyal tendencies Sunset did, so Celesia is more likely to have trusted her with things she never did Sunset then the other way arround
Plus, Celestia wouldn't have Twilight 'graduate' into an alicorn without making sure she knew as much as she could right? I mean, I'm speculating but it just seems logical to assume that.

Celestia probably had the same plans for Sunset and we don't know what the actual cause of Sunsets deciding to leave. From the story it looked like she was just really ambitious and pushed ahead to far for Celestia to be comfortable with. With Twilight she may have modified her teaching style a bit. Softened it as it were.

Well, Celestia apparently sensed Sunset's intentions became corrupted at some point, as she seeked power through less than honest means. That's why she said she wasn't gonna be her mentor anymore - it wasn't just a simple case of her pushing so much as why/how she was pushing, according to the comic.
"Mentor on friendship, not magic"
It seems like Friendship is a literal source of magic in Equestria, much like love. A very powerful one at that. So Twilight's study of it has much to do with her ascencion as a higher magic being, rather than being a separate subject.
But yeah, this discussion is based on assumptions so maybe we should wait to see if/when it ever gets clarified.

Very true, only one cavat. Twilight was already learning pretty powerful magic before she went to Ponyville. Friendship I a part of it, possibly a field of magic, but not a source of magic. Though I would say it makes a good booster.
