Description
Animated pixel iMac. I was bored. *shrug*Done in three and a half hours in GIMP 2.6 pixel by pixel
Bonus points if you can guess what all the dock icons are.
Want to see more computers animated? Give me some suggestions.

If you have Photoshop simply go to Window -> Animation and adjust the layers you want visible for each frame, then choose Save for Web & Devices and save it as a .gif when you're done.

GIMP surprisingly has more complex animation than Photoshop. You can do fade and scaling effects automatically with a little nose around the video editor.

I see. Don't get me wrong though, I wasn't endorsing Photoshop over GIMP (just using it as an example since it's what I'm most familiar with) though I do prefer to do those things manually when working with pixel art.

Yay, a fellow GIMP user!
This is so awesome.... I just got an iMac (the same model pictured here) yesterday evening and set it up today, so this is almost like a welcoming gift.
I would so love to see an animated Ismai 8080-- I love historic and vintage computers, and any recognition they receive. An animated Commodore, classic Apple or Amiga system would be pretty cool, too....

I only use it for Pixel animation. I use photoshop CS3 (soon to be CS4) for everything else.

Ah, I see. Never hurts to be versed in different programs for different tasks, though.

Dock Icons:
Finder, iCal, safari, Trash, Photoshop CS3 (or CS4), System Monitor, Address Book, iTunes, Dashboard, Photobooth, (the yellow and blue one is something with a K, it the Mac OS X guide), and thats all I got. I think I missed 5 or 6 of them.

They yellow and blue one is MU:LAB
Music production suite.
No dashboard, it's time machine and no system monitor. Best guess of the lot though!

yeah some of them I seen before but I just messed up the names. Was the one with the red, green blue bars Numbers (thats the one I thought was the system monitor)?

Custom building is the trump card over the Macintosh, but not everyone likes to custom build. I sure as hell don't. Too much hassle.

True, custom builds are probably a very small part of the computer market these days.
To the people who build them, its probably more of a hobby than anything. Its like Legos for adults

I think it is a niche market and always has been really.

Malumvolo In reply to Ben-Anderson [2009-10-22 23:29:10 +0000 UTC]
Yeah. Wasn't there a point in time where almost all the computers you got came in "kits" that you had to assemble?
That was before all the big brands came along.

The first was in the Mid 1970s with the MITS Altair. Even the first Apple computer (Apple I ) was a kit computer.
