Description I might work on this some more. Some of the sizes seem...off, compared to other animals. For all of the species, I went by length. I don't know if my sources were wrong, or I just drew them wrong. Anyway, this is a *decent* representation of all of the MAJOR species in the book series Redwall according to real-life size.

I also might go back and add a bit of detail. But this is it for the moment.

On the left side, you have the "vermin" or the bad creatures of Redwall. From top to bottom:
Wildcat
Fox
Pine Marten
Ferret
Stoat
Rat
Weasel

On the right side are the "woodlanders" or the good creatures. From top to bottom:
Badger
Otter
Hare
Red Squirrel
Hedgehog
Mole
Mouse
Shrew

Please leave critiques and if you know one of the sizes is wrong, let me know.

The smallest woodlanders are shrews, and the biggest are badgers. Smallest verdins are weasels, and two of the biggest are both foxes and wildcats., of course the smallest fox is similar size to the small badger and small wildcat, but the big fox is bigger than the big badger, and slightly as big as the big wildcat. Great work!

Yeah, Redwall sort of distorts the size a little bit.

Very good chart! Thank you for making one.

I like the chart! Β And I think someone said it earlier, but while this is accurate to the real creatures, Jacques averaged their sizes. Β Creatures larger than hare/squirrel seem to get a little smaller, and the smaller creatures (mice/shrews/voles) gain size. Β So a mouse is nearly the size of a squirrel but still much smaller than a Badger Lord.

You're right. Β I thought about this a lot while reading Redwall. Β All the characters are described as being the same size as each other, but there's no way a fox and a mouse, or a fox and a rat, would match in size, etc. Β He didn't take that part into account when writing the books. Β

Hey, would thee mind iffen I saved this picture into my computer and colored in the animals? Or should I just start from scratch? I want to use this picture, just like it, but color the outlines like animals. I just want your permission before I do anything, because it is your picture, and I'd give you credit I just love this picture, just like it is, but I want to color in my favorite Redwall characters of each race would you mind?

The fox Urgan Nagru wore a wolf pelt (the wolf did have a name, Urgan), but there were no living wolf characters in the books.

And sure, you can use this, and yes, please credit me. What site is it, may I ask?

Funny thing, I was thinking of making something very like this just to morning . Actually, the thing that confuses me the most about the series is where do they get milk and cream when they don't have cows? D: They've mentioned them, but never had them in the series. And they are incredibly racist, but we all know that . If they had them shown realistically and not all ugly it would be hard to hate an adorable stoat. Seriously, those critters are ADORABLE.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Benalene In reply to KrazyPerson [2011-09-04 00:41:42 +0000 UTC]

Some people say that they actually have nut milk (like almond milk), thought I am not sure if you can make cheese from that.

I know what you mean about the cuteness in real life. Rats are insanely adorable . I always hated that they were the bad guys

If I read a Redwall novel and referred to this during battles or confrontations...then some things would seem really beyond nature. For example: Martin the Warrior against Tsarmina Greeneye! MAH! She's been defeated by a teeny-weeny mouse!

PhantomReaver In reply to Fallen-Nightowl [2011-01-13 23:41:35 +0000 UTC]

The wolverine Gulo the Savage was defeated by a squirrel. Makes little sense based on size but we don't read these books because they make sense in real life do we? lol

Dude lol I can't believe a mouse killed a wild cat.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 0

MaraTheWolf [2010-10-30 00:04:32 +0000 UTC]

This is great. They're really good. The stoat actually has a kind of Okami-ish look to it (with black tail and all. )

The only problem I see in the Redwall series is that EVERY single fox, stoat, rat, et cetra, is evil. In all the Redwall books I've read, I've never seen ONE good one (I've read at least ten of them so far) and it does get a little annoying. I'd like to see a fox or ferret with a different personality for once :\ Maybe an evil badger or an evil mouse that has to fight a good rat or a good wildcat for once. I dunno.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

OrchidRex In reply to MaraTheWolf [2010-11-29 01:30:15 +0000 UTC]

I can help you out. There's a genuinely good rat in The Bellmaker, two genuinely good wildcats in Redwall and Mossflower, a ferret who turns good in Pearls of Lutra, another ferret who sacrifices his life for a mouse in Outcast of Redwall, and several fairly harmless vermin in Loamhedge. No good foxes as far as I know, though.

As for woodlanders, voles are often bad news. So are squirrels in a few cases. There was also one seriously disturbed otter in Legend of Luke, although not exactly evil.

OrchidRex In reply to apexpredator7 [2012-08-13 02:32:54 +0000 UTC]

Yep, that one. That otter had some issues. There's a lot of killing in the Redwall series, but not a lot of animals eating each other.

Wasn't Sela the Vixen working for the Redwallers as a way to trick Cluny out of some battle plans during Redwall? I always thought she was a rather good vermin.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

OrchidRex In reply to KaibutsuKuma [2011-06-08 02:02:33 +0000 UTC]

Well... I suppose she's kind of gray. She was trying to play both sides for her own benefit, and ultimately Cluny got wind of it and had her killed. So she wasn't his creature, for sure. She wasn't working for Redwall Abbey either, though.

I'm kind of a geek about this series. Although, I haven't read the four newest. There may be a good fox in there.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

KaibutsuKuma In reply to OrchidRex [2011-06-08 03:07:57 +0000 UTC]

Very true, but in some way, aren't all the villains working for their own benefit?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

OrchidRex In reply to KaibutsuKuma [2011-06-08 16:27:30 +0000 UTC]

Oh yes, definitely; it's part of what makes them villains. Sorry for not being clear. I'm just trying to remember all the cases where a "vermin" type of animal, which would normally be a villain, was not a villain.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 0

HeatherTrelawney [2010-10-17 15:42:04 +0000 UTC]
