Description
Pursuant to my Dalek Panzer piece, this is the design I worked from. I drew it up in Inkscape so I would know what exactly I was doing. This is actually the second iteration of design. My first version featured the big side vents between front and rear armour, but once I'd done that, I realised that it suggested this Dalek could use them as feet! So I rebuilt the design to support flexible articulation.
This is a pretty simple layout, so it doesn't include important stuff like the mechanical supports for the armour/limb/stabiliser components. Nevertheless, it should get the idea across: this is a tripod tank (another British classic: aliens with death rays in tripods never get old).
I rather like the front silhouette. It demonstrates a clean, smooth hull without the clumsy weapon pods of the classic Dalek. This Panzer Dalek can quickly transform into a monolith of faceless armour, clearly invulnerable to anything the enemy can throw at it. Visuals are important.
This design actually took longer than the final drawings. Well, the final drawings are super sketchy, but they have a lot of key detail. It's always worth doing some studies before a final piece, I find.
As an aside, this design is supposed to work as a physical prop. I doubt you'd ever get it walking, though - our robotics aren't quite that good yet. You'd need a lot of digital stunt doubles. I'm also not convinced that you could get an operator inside without getting really smart about it, but robot performers are getting better all the time. Everybody loves BB-88, right?

I could see this working if Doctor Who had a big budget movie today.
