Description
The Reconnaissance Variant of Cheyenne Class Cruiser originated as a byproduct of "Project Εἰρήνη", a joint venture between the Security Council of the United Planets (UFP) and the Klingon Defense Force (KDF) as a result of the Treaty of Alliance of 2347. Designed by then Cmdr. Ed Miarecki, Lt.Cmdr. Herman Zimmerman and the famous Klingon engineer W'Mar and built in orbit of Kessik IV.

The Prototype U.S.S Cardenas was namend after the Cardenas-class, a Cruiser design of the 2250s with similar configuration and role.

The armament and equipment of the Reconnaissance variant of the Cheyenne Class does not correspond to what one would expect from a similarly sized ship of their era. Equipped with heavy phaser cannons, the newly introduced phaser arrays, a variety of torpedo launchers at the front and rear, as well as advanced sensor technology.

Its creator, the famous Klingon designer W'Mar even surmises that a fictional direct confrontation between the U.S.S. Cardenas with the flagship of the Klingon Empire L-31 "Mow'ga" would lead to a massive defeat for the Empire. Later Holo-Simulations confirmed these assumptions and it was not long before the words "traitor to the Empire" fell in the High Klingon Council.

The young alliance between the UFP and the Klingons had first cracks. Admiral H.B. Roberts offered the High Klingon Council a compromise to prevent a possible diplomatic dilema: Starfleet cancels the planned mass production of the Cardenas variant of the Cheyenne Class and redistributed the planned resources to the new projects "Galaxy" and "Nebula". The finished prototype itself should go to the Starfleet Intelligence and monitor the Romulan Neutral Zone.

In his speech to the Klingon Council:

"The Klingons and the Federation of the United Planets are brothers.Who here would dare call us a weakling? Who insults his own brother? Who brings shame on himself and his other brothers? Who dares! He should step out and fight me. I will not allow this coward to dishonor my brothers here!"

It was obvious that Admiral H.B. Roberts impressed the Klingons. With K'mpec becoming Chancellor of the Klingon High Council in 2349, the alliance between the Federation and the Klingon Empire continued to consolidate. 5 years later, W'Mar under Chancellor K'mpec designed the Vor'cha class, which is still very common today.

In an interview from 2374, W'Mar commented on the development of the Cheyenne and Cardenas: "I've been designing ships for the Empire for over 80 years - small cruisers, big warships ... and even tankers - but I'll tell you something ...

The Cardenas was the only ship that turned a sheep into a wolf ... * Laughs *"

Although the Cardenas has never become as popular as the Cheyenne Class, its development has influenced many following classes such as the Akira, Saber and Steamrunner.
