Description
A family tree of the Seleucid Empire, one of the successor states of Alexander the Great's empire . Named after one of Alexander's generals, Seleucid, this empire encompassed Persia and much of the surrounding territories of the Middle East . While failing to conquer territory along the Indian subcontinent , Seleucus had defeated rival Lysimachus and incorporated Anatolia into his empire in 281 BC. Seleucus was then murdered by a half-brother of the reigning Egyptian pharaoh , ending the Wars of the Diadochi and any hope of fully reuniting Alexander's empire.Following the reign of Antiochus VII, the Seleucid Empire had fallen into decline with much of its territories being conquered by the Parthian tribe of northeastern Iran. All subsequent Seleucid monarchs following the Battle of Ecbatana were no more than kings of Syria, which would eventually be annexed by the fledgling Roman Empire .
